Year of Mercy Reflection

Meditations on Mercy - Today's second reading from Paul's letter to the Romans seems out of place for Trini-ty Sunday. Just when we want to focus on the beautiful mystery of three divine persons in one God, here's Paul saying we should boast of our afflictions because some-how they produce endurance, character, and hope, which shows us the love of God poured out through the Holy Spirit. Really, Paul? We should be glad about our afflictions because they show us the love of God? But isn't love all about joy, and the Holy Spirit about inspiration? Afflic-tions are not exactly what come to mind as a way to show love; but then again, God's ways are not our ways. A story is told of Carmelite reformer St. Teresa of Avila getting stuck in a muddy ditch while traveling by wagon to start up a new monastery. She reportedly snapped at God, saying, "If this is how you treat your friends, it's no wonder you have so few of them!" Many of us can relate to that complaint. Just when we are trying to do God's work, obstacles appear, and suffering and adver-sity come our way. But, remember, Jesus did not call us to the easy path, but to the cross. When we accept the cross of the Son with joy, the Fa-ther's merciful love will pour out into the world through the Holy Spirit. And suddenly Paul's words make sense for Trinity Sunday, because that is the Trinity in action. "And I saw the river over which every soul must pass to reach the kingdom of Heaven. And the name of that river was suffering. And I saw the boat which carries souls across the river. And the name of that boat was Love." ~ St. John of the Cross

Special Visitor: We are excited to welcome Sr. Solanus Casey Danda to our parish and school community May 25-27. During her time at Christ the King, Sr. Solanus will visit our school and speak to our youth about responding to the universal call to holiness and her life as a sister from the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity. We invite all parishioners to meet her on Thursday, May 26 in the Gathering Space from 5 to 7 p.m. for Tea and Refreshments. Please contact Melissa at 509.946.1675 x. 234 or [email protected] for more information.

Carmelite Corner

In the following months, the Carmelite Corner will feature teachings from The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Catechesis and Ritual, prepared under the direction of the North American Provincials of the Carmelite Orders, 2000. (1/15)

Our Carmelite Family has been the custodian … of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, for over seven hundred years.

The connection between the Order of Carmel and the Brown Scapular is as indissoluble as it is ancient be-cause the Brown Scapular is the identifying part of our Carmelite religious habit.

Wearing the scapular signifies some degree of member-ship in our Carmelite Family.

Spiritual Practices

Ignatian Spirituality

One of Ignatius' greatest gifts to the church through is Exercises is the Rules for Discernment. The process helps us understand the language that God speaks, and allows us to listen with our whole selves. In discern-ment, we consider in prayer what we experience through our intellect, emotions, and spirit. In other words, in the Ignatian method, every choice involves the whole self. The rules, once incorporated into life, make a huge difference in the ability to understand where God is calling us. Discernment opens the heart and mind so we can better answer the question: what shall I do and how should I proceed so that I can follow God's will for me?

To learn more, visit our website: www.spiritual-exercises.com. Call Ellen at 628-8626 or email her at [email protected]. For Spanish call Cesar at 942-1050.
