THE DIOCESE OF YAKIMA • PASTORAL OFFICE

LA DIÓCESIS DE YAKIMA • CENTRO PASTORAL

“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.” (Jn 15:12) Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Peter’s Pence Collection is an opportunity to become a witness of charity to those who suffer most. Pope Francis has encouraged us to “open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help!” (Misericordiae Vultus, [MV] no. 15).

Through the Peter’s Pence Collection, we stand in solidarity with Catholics all over the world to support the charitable works of our Holy Father. Contributions to this collection support Pope Francis as he reaches out to those suffering the effects of war and violence, natural disasters, and religious persecution.

Pope Francis has told us that “mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope” (MV, no. 10). Please prayerfully consider participating in this collection and becoming a witness of charity, a force of mercy that reaches out to those around the world.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph J. Tyson Bishop of Yakima [Signature electronically applied]

Carmelite Corner

The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel p 4 (6/15)

What is the official status of the Sabbatine Privilege? i.e., Mary would deliver from Purgatory, on the first Saturday after death, those who died wearing the scapular:

In the year 1613 the Holy See determined that the decree establishing the “Sabbatine Privilege” was unfounded….

The Holy See acknowledged that the faithful may devoutly believe that the Blessed Virgin Mary by her continuous intercession, merciful prayers, merits, and special protection will assist the souls of deceased brothers and sisters… especially on Saturday, that day which the Church dedicates to the Blessed Virgin.

Such favors associated with the wearing of the Brown scapular would be meaningless without the wearers’ living and dying in the state of grace, observing chastity according to their state in life, and living a life of prayer and penitence.

For additional information about the Lay Carmelites, contact Rebecca Moak at 509-460-1608.

Spiritual Practices

Ignatian Spirituality

Each prayer activity of the Exercises leads us to deeper self-awareness, which leads us toward God. These exercises teach the difference between consolation and desolation and how the way we are feeling contributes to decision making. The Exercises also help us to evaluate our emotions and learn to use them to understand where God is directing us. Because of this, the Spiritual Exercises are one of the best opportunities for someone trying to make a major life choice. If you’d like to learn to pray in new ways or deepen your prayer, if you’d like to learn how to discern God’s will for your life, and most importantly, if you want to deepen your relationship with God – Father, Son and Spirit – we invite you to participate.

The Spiritual Exercises will start a new session on September 10, in the Christ the King Youth Center Game Room. We invite you to join us. To register, email or call for an application or download one from our Facebook page at SEELTC or call Ellen at 628-8626. For Spanish call Cesar at 942-1050. Email [email protected].
