VISUAL SYSTEMS II _instruced by Eszter ClarkCROSLEY: A Nostalgic Escapeproject deliverables Book | Poster | Website

The assignment was to choose a company and design a print campaign that would sell the brand more effectively. I chose Crosley, a company that specializes in retro style radios and record players. My concept was to sell record players as an experience. The whole process of listening to vinyl records is much more involved and personal than listening to an mp3 on your computer. The idea was A Nostalgic Escape that would al-low you to travel back to a simpler time and re-discover a love for music.

To communicate this idea I used a retro inspired muted color-pallete; I took a lot of inspiration from 60’s and 70’s album covers. I also updated the Crosley logo to fit my concept. Through exploration I decided to use circles to represent records and their circle labels, as well as it being reminiscent of polka dot fabrics used back then. This combined with retro photos was used to create a booklet, poster series, and website.

For the final booklet, I wanted to use paper that looked like newsprint, but felt higher quality, I ended up choosing an off-white charcoal paper because of the texture, as well as proper color saturation when printed. I bound the book myself using a single phamphlet 5-hole sew at the spine. I used pink thread to accent my color choices. The posters were printed on normal heavyweight matte paper, then color corrected to match the booklet.

PACKAGE DESIGN IV _instruced by Thomas McNultyFIREBALL: Evolutionary v. Revolutionary Spirit bottlesproject deliverables: 2 Bottles | 1 Gift box

I first heard about Fireball Whisky when I was watching college football one Saturday night. The camera zoomed in on the crowd and in the middle of the crazy fans was a man chugging a bottle of Fireball. It was funny because I’m pretty sure the camera man, nor the producer saw this and aired about 10 seconds of this madness. It seemed liked after that I saw Fireball everywhere. I saw it in grocery stores, bars, even in my friends cupboards, I was seeing Fireball everywhere. When the oppurtunity came to do an evolutionary bottle design as well as a revolutionary re-design, I jumped at it. I always thought that Fireball’s strongest asset was the fire breathing dragon.

So I kept the dragon and updated the typography choices. I wanted to make the label a little more refined and upscale, without alienating their current consumers. So I kept it simple, using a warm cream paper with line texture, black type, and red foil accents to communicate the fiery cinnamon taste. This new label will allow them to compete with more traditional whiskey companies like Jameson and Power in the bar set-ting, while still maintaing their current customer at the grocery store.

For the second Revolunary design, I wanted to put Fireball in a new category. This design is for an aged premium whisky with a higher proof, with a price tag just under a hundred dollars. I decided on a new bottle shape that would appeal to the marked up price, and a circle label that would show off this new bottle. I ended up getting the label made of metal with a black finish to be like charred metal you’d see in black-smithing to further sell the “fire” concept of the whisky.

Shake Down is a new restaraunt that is set to open within the next year. They will be located in Downtown San Francisco, a storefront was just purchased on Geary Street, right next to a bar named Whiskey Thieves. Shake Down is a restaurant that’s dedicated to fresh and organic fruit. All of the products served in the store will be all organic as well as being local grown. The ice cream is all home made with fresh local milk. The main staple of this restaurant is fresh fruit shakes and smoothies. The name was an obvious choice sense Shake Down is remenisent of the 50’s where Sock Hops lasted all night and the whole town went to “Shake Down”. The logo was desgined to have a vintage feel with a sense of the 1950’s Diner and Ice Cream Palor’s with a sense of music, this was also the concept for the restaruant. Going along with the theme, Shake Down utilizes the jukebox and incorporate the vinyl record by making it the menu. Shake Down also hands out a 7 inch promotional give away that has the business information on a record label. Shake Down is for the whole family, as well as the young and hip. It’s a place where you can go and get away from the everyday bombardment of technology and the media, and just relax and relive your glory days.

PRINT & DIGITAL MEDIA _instruced by Nicole FloresSHAKEDOWN: Restaurant Identityproject deliverables: Various Applications | Poster Series |

This project was to brand a new restraunt. I came up with this idea for an old-school shake joint, but with a twist. All of the products served at this place would be organic and straight from the farmers. The idea was to take you back to a simpler time when you didn’t have to worry about preservatives or GMOs. You would get your groceries from the local grocery store, and they would get their proucts from the local farmers. Restraunts would do the same. So I didn’t want the organic, farm grown aspect to be the first read of the brand. I wanted people to come there because it was cool and fun, and then discover that it was supporting local farmers, and it was actually pretty healthy.

I wanted to come up with a name that would communicate the retro concept as well as sell the idea of shakes and smoothies. I ended up choosing Shakedown because it had the word shake in the name but also made you think of the old “sock hops” where you’d dance the night away to your favorite tunes. After I decided on the name, next I thought old school records and music was a good concept to build on for the look and feel. I utilized them in the menu, which was made to look like an open-fold album cover. I also wanted the logo itself to feel vibrant and musical, so I decided on doing a script logo and making the S reminiscent of a treble clef. The color pallate I wanted to be vibrant and colorfull, but I wanted to keep the cost down since this company would be spending most of their budget on produce, I only wanted to use two colors. I decided on complimentary colors to create that vibrant contrast that I was looking for.

IDENTITY II _instruced by Todd HedgpethBROOKLYN NETS: Corprate Identityproject deliverables: 1 Guideline Manaul | Stationery |

Sports logos are a major reason why I am Graphic Designer. I used to draw my favorite team’s logos all over the cover of my textbooks at school. I usee to sit in class and try to draw the different logos I saw around the room on kid’s hats, t-shirts, and shoes. I became an expert at the Nike swoosh, and the Addidas three leaf clover. I would draw the SF, NY, and LA logos for the baseball teams, and I could draw the Chicago Bulls logo in my sleep because I stared at my Micheal Jordan poster every night before I went to sleep.

At the time the Nets were starting their first year in Brooklyn after moving from New Jersey. They unveiled their new logo and color scheme, and we’ll just say it fell flat compared to other NBA logos. I decided this was the perfect oppurtunity to tackle the job of giving an NBA team a new look and a new logo. The logo itself had to represent two things, basket-ball, and Brooklyn. I utilized the iconic Brookyln Bridge and a basketball to create sort of a shield/crest. It needed to be easily readable at 1 inch as well as 20 feet and It also needed to be readable on both black and white backgrounds while using the same logo.

For the look and feel, I wanted to communicate the attitude of Brooklyn. Brooklyn itself can be considered a brand; people from all over the world have heard about Brooklyn so the Nets had to live up to that standard. So I used candid shots of fans, as well as iconic landmarks of Brooklyn to get the people of Brooklyn behind their new team. I also came up with the tag line “Be a Fan From the Start” to entice the next generation.

PACKAGE DESIGN III _instruced by Thomas McNultyTHIRSTY BEAR: six pack Redesignproject deliverables: Bottles | Cans | Light version | Carrier

For this project, we were told to pick a beer company and design or re-design a six-pack of bottles and the carrying case. Also, we would make a can version and a light version. Tom recommended we go visit the brewery to get a good feel for the company. I decided to go with Thirsty Bear Brewing Company which is located right around the corner from 180 New Montgomery. Thirsty Bear currently didn’t sell a six-pack, so I thought it would be interesting to explore this option for them.

After visiting Thirsty Bear and going on a tour of their downstairs brew-ery, the first thing that hit me was the warm feel of the building. There was a ton of wood in that place, on the floor, the walls, the bar, even the beer menus were all on really warm colored woods. The other thing that stuck out was this newspaper article they hung up next to the bar. It talked about a man named Victor Kozlov being confronted by a bear for his beer. Victor, un-afraid of the bear, kept drinking his beer and the bear bit his arm off and ran away with his beer. This is the story behind the Thirsty Bear name.

Thirsty Bear even had a beer named after Victor, the Kozlov Stout, so I decided that was the beer I would choose for the six pack. My concept was to combine the warm wood feel of the restaraunt, with the bear story of Victor Kozlov. I came up with a bear-head shape that would fit nicely as a label and could be used flat as a logo.

PACKAGE DESIGN III _instruced by Thomas McNultyFEAR THE BEARD: Hair careproject deliverables: 3 Bottles | 2 Tubes | 3 Tubs | Display

Two weeks before I was assigned the skin care/hair care project, the San Francisco Giants won their second World Championship in three years. I actually had class the day of the World Series Parade which shut down Market Street and made it nearly impossible to get to class. I made it though, and all the madness inspired me to do this project.

I wanted to make a product for the core baseball fans which were teen-agers to late 40-year-olds, and have it available at a price point for ev-eryone. The design needed to be simple, but communicate the personal-ities of the players that made up the championship team. I came up with the names for the products based on the player and his own hair style, personality or individual accomplishments. For example, Brian Wilson was injured when the Giants won so his product was the Injured Reserve Healing Serum. Also during that season, Matt Cain, the clean-shaven pitcher, pitched a perfect game, which is very rare in Baseball. His prod-uct was Perfect Game Cain Shave Cream.

It was this play on words, obvious Giants color scheme, and simple easy-to-read layout that set this product apart from the crowd while still giving it a trustworthy look that made you feel you were getting your money’s worth. The display I kept really simple. I wanted a slope to rest the tubs, and a simple flat display to show off the symmetry of the bottles I chose. I left the natural wood grain to resemble a baseball bat, and finished it off with the logo engraved on the front.

PACKAGE DESIGN II _instruced by Christine GeorgeCOWGIRL CREAMERY: Cheese designproject deliverables: 3 wheels | Small rounds

This packaging assignment was to pick a cheese company and re-de-sign it. I chose Cowgirl Creamery because it was local and because I’ve always wanted to do a western themed project because my grandpa was a cowboy. He rode and sold horses, lived on a ranch, and even made custom western belt buckles. He was also a fine art painter and painted western landscapes and wild horses.

Needless to say, I had a lot of inspirtion to work with on this one. I decided on making a system that looked kind of like a western style leather belt. For the logo I used there same cowgirl on a horse silhouette but added the ovals and type to create a belt buckle style focal point for the brand. I also wanted to step outside my comfort zone on the color pallette and chose more feminine colors to sell the Cowgirl concept.

I used low contrast pattern a lot in this project to add interest to the de-sign without overly complicating it. My initial concept was to use a denim and flannel texture to further sell the western theme, but scaled it back when it got to be too much.

I got the chance to explore some new typefaces that I wouldn’t ordinarily use. But with the western concept it was a nice touch to have the vary-ing typefaces for each different flavor of cheese.

PACKAGE DESIGN II _instruced by Christine GeorgeSATRIALES: Deli Package designproject deliverables: Several packaging items

Satriales is a deli from the television series The Sopranos. In the se-ries,the main character, Tony, the mob boss, owns and runs Satriales. In the show you see the deli and the branding is pretty much non-existent, so I thought it would be a good concept for this project.

I approached this project as if Tony Soprano himself hired me to do it. He would want something bold and masculine. I also wanted to give hints to the mafia and the show without it being over the top. The only equity the store had was the script sign outside with a giant pig mounted on top of the building. I used that influence to desgin the logo. I went with the traditional deli stamp concept to package the meats and sandwiches. For the paper, I made a newspaper texture using old “mob” news headlines and stories. It was a clever way of adding the mafia concept without it being over the top.

I used different paper stocks to switch up the look of varying products. Some are on newsprint, some bright white, and some craft paper. The different tints of paper really add diversity to the whole set.

TYPOGRAPHY III _instruced by Ariel GreyBROKEN: Paper Promotion Bookproject deliverables: 56 page book | Swatch Book |

For this paper promotion book, my concept was based off of Neenah Papers line of paper called Environment. Through concept development I ended up doing the book on kids who grow up in low-income environ-ments, and how that is the broken link in our educational sytems. Kids who grow up poor face much different and more difficult circumstances, and with the steady decline of the economy, the rate of homeless kids is going up every day.

This subject was a lot more serious than many of the projects. This project opened my eyes to the world of homelessness and how not all homeless people are just crack heads who don’t want to get a job.

I chose photography that showed real emotions about what young homeless kids go through and how their circumstances effect their out-comes. I used the muted tones of the paper to show the gritty aspect of their lives. This was combined with a few pop colors and bold headlines to help tell these children’s stories.

For the swatch book, I decided to make it out of cardboard to resemble the cardboard shelters some kids are forced to grow up in. I also utilized the cardboard on the spine of the book by using craft paper.

IDENTITY I _instruced by Darrell HaydenTRASHCANVAS: Non-Profit Organizationproject deliverables: Logo and Identity System

For this project we were asked to come up with a non-profit organization that would help solve a problem occuring in the world. After living in San Francisco for about a year, the trash problem was daily on my mind. I lived in the Tenderloin district in downtown San Francisco and it was a daily occurance to have to step over trash as I walked to school.

I wanted to come up with a way to add more trash cans to the city but also make it exciting and fun. I thought about what if every trash can was an art exhibit. Each can could be it’s own work of fuctional art that would be seen by thousands of people every day. So the idea was a blank canvas, a blank Trash Can(vas) that is.

Trashcanvas would commission art pieces that would all house a stan-dard trashcan that would be accessible by the Recology company that handles SF trash. There would be Trashcanvas done by famous artist as well as local school projects or community outreach teams.

Trashcanvas would get people involved, and talking about the subject of waste disposal in major cities, and it would bring awareness to people to stop littering. But most of all it would be a fun way for people to throw out there garbage.

This project was to pick a band and re-design one of thier current albums. I chose the band Califone and went with their album Roots & Crowns. The album was a mix of folk, rock, and blues and a lot of the songs were old memories of the band. That’s where they got the title; the “roots” stood for their past and the “crowns” were the albums they put out.

I thought this was really symbolic so I decided to use that symbolism and make an illustration for the cover. I went with an older wood-cut style of animation to give it a stamp look to it. I decided to use old photography I found from the Library of Congress to give it a family photo album feel to represent the “roots” aspect. But I also put a gold border around each photo to also symbolize how looking back at these memories are priceless and how your memories are part of your accom-plishments.

For the poster, I duplicated the American flag, and used photos for the stripes and the illustration in place of the stars. The poster was made to represent the American dream and achieving your goal, the Crown.

GRAPHIC DESIGN II _instruced by Andrew JohnsonEVIDENCE OF ALIEN ENCOUNTERS: Promotion Packetproject deliverables: Booklet | Mailer | Poster

For this assignment, we were told to find an interesting museum exhibit to promote. We could make it up or find a real one. I looked at a list of museums all over the country and the UFO Museum in Roswell, New Mexico stood out to me for some reason. It seemed like a fun concept so I decided to go for it.

My concept was to make this booklet like some top secret FBI files. I decided to use the blue to resemble blue copy paper that was used a lot for copy machines back in the day. I used screen shots from different UFO sightings as well as other clues to alien activity.

I structured the book around the definitions of close encounters of the first through fourth kinds. The circular type used on the cover and on the mailer was made in an exploration of crop circles and seemed to fit well with the overall concept.

I did this project early on in my schooling at the Academy of Art. It really got me excited for the program and opened my eyes to the different techniques I was capable of. I’d say this is one of my favorite projects I’ve done for that reason. It gave me hope that I belonged at this school and in this program.

A FEW MORE BOOKS _instruced by Christine Rolik, Sean McGuire, Michael Kilgore.MISCELLANEOUS BOOKS: Early projects while at AAU

These last four books I wanted to include because they were all projects I was really proud of. The Sacred Writing book was made in Michael Kil-gore’s History of Graphic Design class and The Presidio book was made in Sean McGuire’s GD 1 class. The other two books The Lemon and The Coliseum I made in Book Arts taught by Christine Rolik.

Sacred Writing is about ancient hieroglyphics, and The Presidio is a neighborhood guide of that area. The lemon book was a little more per-sonal. The first half of the book gives all the definitions of the word Lem-on; the second half of the book is a short story written by me explaining my connection to the fruit. In brief, the first house I ever lived in had a lemon tree out front and many of my childhood memories are triggered by the scent of a lemon. I made this book in a classic novel style, and printed and bound the book myself.

The Coliseum book was about our favorite place on earth; mine hap-pened to be the Oakland Raiders Coliseum. I had season tickets that year so I used my tickets and ticket lanyard in the contruction of the book. Inside I used photography I had taken while at the games that year and gave a personal story of why it’s my favorite place in the world. I also printed and bound this book myself, reconstructing the lanyard as a bookmark and a velcro belly band. All of these books were near and dear to my heart, so I included them to share with you.
