When you are listening to something, try to listen for the general meaning.

Don’t worry if you miss words or details.

If you are listening to a tape or CD, the first listening should just be general.

You can play the recording many times to practise listening for details.

This skill means that you do not have to read every word and every line.

SKIM

This skill means that you look over the text to get a general idea of what it is about.

You can skim a newspaper article to get a general idea of what it is about.

EXAMPLENew York plane crash pilot Chesley Sullenberger hailed

as hero January 16, 2009 THE pilot of the US Airways jet that crashed into icy waters off New York has been hailed as a hero after coolly overseeing the miraculous escape of 155 passengers and crew.

The pilot was praised by survivors and officials for smoothly landing the jet belly-first onto the Hudson River, allowing passengers to make a successful evacuation from the stricken craft.

The captain was former military fighter pilot Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger III, with the New York Daily News swiftly branding him “The Hero of the Hudson”.

“It would appear that the pilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river, and then making sure that everybody got out,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters.

“I had a long conversation with the pilot. He walked the plane twice after everybody else was off. And tried to verify that there was nobody else onboard. And assures us there were not. “The first and most important thing is, this pilot did a wonderful job, and it would appear that all roughly 155, including crew and one infant, got out safely.”

Reading for detailed Comprehension

This skill means that you read for specific details and concentrate on the details of what you are reading.

You might do this when you are reading an instruction manual, when you are reading to answer comprehension questions or when you are reading a novel or a story for pleasure.

This is a slower type of reading.

Improve Your Writing Skills at Home

When you practise your writing skills you are developing your English Language Skills.

Writing can help reinforce what you have learnt in class or what you have learnt on the way to or from school.

Writing a new word in a sentence can help you to remember it.

Check the meaning of the following words in your dictionary:

Engaging

Now write a sentence for each showing the meaning

Writing is an important skillThere are other ways to practise your writing. You can:

Write a journal

Email your classmates or teacher

Summarise interesting articles you have read

Study models of writing

Look at structure and content

Discuss your writing with teachers and students

Write drafts and rewrite your essays based on feedback.

LEISURE

Everybody needs time off from work or study.

Leisure time can come in many forms.

The most important type of leisure activity is one that you enjoy!

There are two types of leisure:

1/ Active Leisure

Uses physical and or mental exertion such as sporting activities, games, walking etc

2/ Passive Leisure

Which uses less or no physical and or mental exertion such as going to the cinema, watching television, visiting friends.

The important thing to remember is that you should be relaxed during your leisure time

1. Take out a piece of paper. Divide your page in half. Make a list of all of the leisure activities that you enjoy in the left column.
