Milled talc production, currently running at around 18,000 tonnes/y, will be transferred to RTM’s Weisskirchen plant. The company is also closing a 19,000 tonnes/y underground leucophyllite mine at Kleinfeistritz, but to compensate, a new open-pit mine is about to commence operations in the same area. At Rabenwold, the largest talc deposit in Middle Europe, mining operations are being transferred from the northern pit to the newly developed southern pit. Industrial Minerals, Jun 2007, (477), 15 China: Annada – TiO 2 Annada Titanium Industry Co Ltd intends to spend Yuan 148.65 M to expand its TiO 2 pigment capacity from 30,000 tonnes/y to 40,000 tonnes/y by mid-2008. The company is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange and it recently issued 20 million new shares to raise finance to fund the expansion. Annada’s sulfate-route TiO 2 pigment plant, located at Tongling- Tongguanshan (Anhui province), produces only anatase grades. In fact, Annada claims that it was the second largest producer of anatase TiO 2 in China, according to the nationally assembled data for 2005. Prior to 2004, the company’s TiO 2 capacity was only 4000 tonnes/y. Then it expanded fivefold in early 2004. (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Jul 2004, 4). Between mid-2004 and mid-2007, another 10,000 tonnes/y was added. China Chemical Reporter, 6 Jul 2007, 18 (19), 7 China: Cabot & Shanghai Coking Chemical – carbon black Cabot Chemical (Tianjin) Co Ltd, a 70:30 joint venture between Cabot (of the US) and Shanghai Coking Chemical (part of the Huayi group) commenced operating its 105,000 tonnes/y carbon black plant at the TEDA chemical industrial park in the Tianjin docks area in August 2006. The plant has been operating at full capacity since then. Now, the company plans to install two new production lines, which will raise total capacity here to 250,000 tonnes/y. The expansion project, for which budgeted investment is $65 M, should be completed within 15 months. Cabot notes that the Tianjin plant incorporates the most advanced waste energy recovery and environmental technologies available anywhere in the world. The plant is being built for Guilin Jinshan Chemical Industry Co Ltd and it has been designed to employ Guilin’s technology. The company is investing Yuan 60 M in this project, which should be completed by April 2008. The project is described as the “third phase in Guilin Jinshan’s programme for commercialising ultrafine calcium carbonate products with high added-value.” Guilin Jinshan claims to be the largest producer of “light calcium carbonate” in China. Two years ago, the company was reported to have committed Yuan 150 M for the establishment of a 300,000 tonnes/y plant at Jinshan for making “light calcium carbonate.” (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Aug 2005, 6). China Chemical Reporter, 26 Jul 2007, 18 (21), 14 China: Qingdao Tianshi Chemical – optical brighteners Qingdao Tianshi Chemical Industry Co Ltd has started-up a 3000 tonnes/y plant for making liquid optical brighteners, which will be marketed under the SBL-2 brandname. The product is intended for use in the textile industry, especially for cellulose-based fibres and for polyester blends. SBL-2 imparts a blue-violet luminescence. It has excellent acid resistance and it can therefore be safely used in finishing fluids of acidic resins or in solutions with a high electrolyte content. China Chemical Reporter, 26 Jul 2007, 18 (21), 15 China: Shandong Dawn & Wuxi Baoteng Traders – TiO 2 Shandong Dawn Titanium Co Ltd has been created as a new joint venture between Baoteng Traders Co Ltd (of Wuxi-Xishan, Jiangsu province) and the Dawn Group (of Shandong province). Wuxi Baoteng has some experience as a trader in TiO 2 pigments, while the Dawn group has mainly focused on trading with Korea, notably in plastics. The partners’ ambitious plan is to invest Yuan 470 M (about $60 M) to build a 100,000 tonnes/y TiO 2 pigment plant. China Chemical Reporter, 26 Jul 2007, 18 (21), 10 China: Wuxi Xibao – TiO 2 In June 2007, the environmental regulatory authority of the Wuxi municipal government in Jiangsu province announced that it had issued a permanent closure order to Wuxi Xibao Titanium Industry Co Ltd in respect of its 12,000 tonnes/y sulfate- route TiO 2 pigment plant at Xishan- Houqiao on the eastern outskirts of Wuxi, by Lake Taihu. The closure order was issued because the company had failed to take appropriate measures to stop the discharge of spent sulfuric acid into local waterways. Wuxi Xibao had been selling TiO 2 pigments under the B-101 brandname to domestic customers, as well as to overseas customers in Australia, Japan and the US. The local government has identified 511 chemical plants that will be closed by the end of 2008 unless they cease polluting Lake Taihu, and the Xishan-Houqiao TiO 2 plant is one of 161 small chemical plants that have already been ordered to shut down since the beginning of this year.
