How to raise the money...

THINK BIG! The average sponsorship level for the China Trek is around

£2,700 so below we have indicated some tried and tested

ideas to get you started.

Start by asking everyone you know – the more people you

ask, the more you will raise! Try to get payment upfront to

halve the effort, and ALWAYS start each sponsorship form with

a generous sponsor as this will set a high standard for the rest.

(It really does work!)

Ask your employer to sponsor you, too – many companies

actually match pound for pound!

Here are some ideas:Arrange a £10 menu at a local restaurant on one £200

of their quiet nights and charge 10 friends £20!

(Do this twice as it’s so easy)

Hold a karaoke in your local pub for a percentage £200

of the drinks sales

Two car boot sales (get your family and friends to £150

have a clear out!)

Ask your local school to hold a non-uniform day £120

Place collection boxes in 5 outlets £80

Static trek in a shopping centre for a couple of hours £200

Hold a quiz night with raffle £200

Dinner party or barbecue for 20 friends who £200

each pay £10

Hold a skills auction where you rope in friends £300

with certain skills (hairdressing / reflexology etc)

to donate their skills for free

Two Friday night Three-legged Pub Crawls £300

Ask 10 close friends to write to everyone they know £300

Collect at a local football ground/supermarket £150

(get permission!)

Ask 5 business clients or suppliers for £30 £150Ask friends and family for sponsorship money £150

instead of Birthday/Christmas presents

TOTAL £2,700!

Tell the world! You are doing something quite amazing – make sure you tell

EVERYONE – and let your local newspaper/radio know, too!

With a bit of thought, planning and some help from your

friends, you’ll have reached the target before you know it

– GO FOR IT!!!

Day 1Depart London for Beijing.

Day 2Beijing

Arrive Beijing during the morning, where depending on our

arrival time there may be time to take a city tour and visit the

fabulous Forbidden City. On arrival at our city hotel we can

freshen up and relax. There will be a full tour briefing in the

evening.

Day 3Beijing – Huangyaguan

We transfer this morning from Beijing to above Huangyaguan

(3.5-4.5 hours) where we get our first glimpse of the Great Wall

as it snakes along the ridgeline of the Yanshan Mountains. The

wall is well renovated here and it disappears off on both

horizons. We walk predominantly downhill along the

Taipingzhai Section until we reach the small town of

Huangyaguan. Here the wall crosses the road that leads to our

nearby accommodation.

Day 4Huangyaguan – Mountain Village

Huangyaguan is situated in a beautiful valley in the heart of

the Yanshan Mountains. We start our day’s walk heading up

the steep renovated steps towards what appears to be a sheer

cliff face. This is where we encounter ‘Heavens Ladder’, a steep

climb of over 200 steps leading us up the cliff face. Once we

have caught our breath the path continues gradually up to the

top of the ridge and once again the old wall, which follows the

contours of the mountain. We drop down into the

neighbouring valley and clamber along the wall as it gradually

descends to the valley below. We bed down in the houses of a

local village, a real cultural experience.

Day 5Village – Jinshanlin

Beyond the village where we sleep, the wall snakes its way

across a wild and sweeping landscape steeped in history.

Unfortunately, from here we are unable to follow the wall as it

is in a state of decay and the rough old stones are loose and

unstable. So, we take old, steep farmers’ tracks up to the wall for

great photos, tracing the contours of the hills. We then descend

and make our way out of the village along a valley of fertile to

our waiting transport that will take us to Jinshanlin.(3-4 hours)

Day 6Gubeiko – Jinshanlin

A quick 20-minute hop in the bus takes us to our start point just

outside the village of Gubeiko. The day starts with the luxury

of a gentle meander alongside an unrestored yet well-preserved

section of the Wall. It appears to be of an almost brick-like

construction here. This part dates back to the Qing Dynasty,

the last dynasty to rule over this vast land.We wander down

into the valley in order to skirt a Chinese military post before

rejoining the wall for the final stretch up and along to Jinshanlin.

A short walk takes us to our simple cabins for the night.

Day 7 Jinshanlin – Simatei

Today’s stunning walk on this largely restored section takes us

from Jinshanlin to Simatei.Starting where we left off yesterday,

we head up the carefully restored steps which take us up into

the mountains one final time. The scenery is superb with rolling

purple hills fading into the distance. We leave the Great Wall at

Simatei, enjoying the view as it clings precariously to the rock

face opposite; classic ‘scales on a dragon’s back’scenery. We finish

the day with the opportunity to zip slide across the lake and

then catch a small boat ride back across to our accommodation.

If you prefer not to zip slide it is an easy 30 minute walk down.

Day 8Simatei – Mutianyu

Our day starts with a bus transfer (approx 3 hrs) from our hotel

at Simatei to Mutianyu Great Wall.We take a brief walk

through a friendly village before we climb for 1-2 hours up the

hillside. We can see the Wall high on the ridge ahead of us, and

slowly wind our way up to it. Once more our efforts are

rewarded by stunning views as the Wall disappears from view

in both directions and this marks a great end to our trek.We

start our final descent to our hotel at Mutianyu, not missing

the opportunity to do some haggling in the markets before

you reach the hotel,so carry some money with you for this!

We mark the evening with another fine feast and a few

celebratory drinks in the bar.

Day 9:Return to Beijing

We transfer back to Beijing, the nation‚s capital and home to

over 13 million people. Our senses will be unprepared as we

enter Beijing and experience its frenetic energy, quite a

contrast after the natural scenery and remote tranquillity of the

past few days. There will be some free time before preparing

for an evening celebration to mark our achievement.

Day 10: Transfer to the airport for the flight back to London.

(Overnight flights arrive back into London the next morning.)
