CHILI COOK-OFF COMPETITION RULESNOTE: Minimum of 8 and maximum of 18 contestants required to conduct this event

1. HOMESTYLE CHILI is defined by the cook’s favorite combination of ingredients resulting in a dish seasoned with chili peppers and spices. CHILI is defined as any kind of meat or combination of meats cooked with chili peppers, beans, various other spices and other ingredients. The cook-off grounds will be setup on 3 July 2014. Teams may arrive any time after 6 p.m. to choose a location and drop of cooking equipment, decorations, etc. Teams may arrive before 7 a.m. on Friday, July 4 to set up. However, cooking may not begin prior to 7 a.m.

2. NO INGREDIENT MAY BE PRE-COOKED IN ANY WAY prior to the commencement of the official cook off. The only exceptions are canned or bottled tomatoes, tomato sauce, pepper sauce, beverages, broth and grinding and/or mixing of spices. Meat may be treated, pre-cut or ground. MEAT MAY NOT BE PRE. COOKED, in any manner. All other ingredients must be chopped or prepared during the preparation period.

3. THE COOKING PERIOD will be a minimum of 3 hours and a maximum of 5 hours. The exact starting and ending of the cooking period is to be announced by each local sponsoring organization.

4. CONTESTANT’S MEETING – A representative of FMWR-CAC Fred. Ware conduct a contestant’s meeting no later than 1 hour prior to the official starting time of the cook off, at which time final instructions are to be given and questions answered.

5. EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES – Contestants are responsible for supplying all of their own cooking utensils, chili/crock pot, serving ladle, chopping knives, cutting boards, coolers etc. The sponsors of the cook off will provide an area with 2 tables for each contestant, and one(1) electric burner, hot plate for your to cook with.

6. MINIMUM CHILI REQUIRED – Each contestant must cook a minimum of two quarts of competition chili prepared in one pot to be submitted for judging. Sharing or splitting chili with another contestant for the purpose of increasing the number of entries in any event will result in disqualification.

7. PEOPLE’S CHOICE CHILI is governed by the Contest Coordinator and cook off chairman of each cook off. The People’s Choice Award will be decided by the public.

8. A CUP FOR THE JUDGES – Each contestant will be assigned a contestant’s number by the Chief Scorekeeper and given an official 32oz. judging cup. In order for a cook to receive the judging cup for their specific contest, they must sign the contestant list. Each contestant should verify that the number on the bottom of their cup is the same as their assigned contestant number. Each contest is responsible for delivering their cup, which must be filled to the top of the cup’s rim, to the judging area at the official time for judging.

9. Judges will vote for their favorite entry under rules as defined by the Contest Coordinator . Rule are based on the following major considerations: good chili flavor, texture of the meat, consistency, blend of spices, aroma and color. Beans will be accepted, along with other “foreign objects” such as corn, rice, pasta, fruit, etc.

10. DECORATIONS – Contestant are also responsible for decorating their table based on a theme of their choice.
