What are the United Nations issues about Children’s Rights?

• Half a billion children live on less than 1$ per day• 2 million people in some countries die every year

because they don’t have access to safe drinking water

• Over 110 million children don’t go to school worldwide. Over 50% are girls.

• 500,000 children died from AIDS since 1999 and 3.8 million have died so far

• 11 million children die every year from serious causes

• More than 33 million children die because they don’t have Vitamin A in their blood which could cause: blindness, death or diarrhea

• 250 million children aged 5 to 14 are working around the world

• 2 million children have been killed by gun or in a fight

• A lot of children get tortured and ill-treatment (means getting the wrong medicine)

• Children get beaten or are sexually abused by their parents.

Children’s Rights Issues

• Some girls get treated wrongly such as getting beaten or raped

• Two million people live on the streets• Children taking drugs on the streets• Sick with AIDS

What are the rights of Children?• Children must be able to

survive with a correct amount of food, water and shelter

• Children must have education• Children must be protected

from illness and they must be protected from any kind of abuse

• Children must have a normal life and have a loving and caring family

Street Children

• An article shows that street children are vulnerable to being arrested. The police go around all the time and round up street children. Later, they send the children to a rehabilitation center. They are kept there from two weeks to 6 months! In Dong Doa Social Protection, the children are kept in dirty, overcrowded cells. They are locked in for 23 hours a day with adults. The only thing they are given for toilet needs is a bucket. In the cell, the light is on all day and all night. The children are not given education, medical/psychological treatment, the

• families don’t know where the children are, and the staff member normally beat the children. Staff members slapped or punched children, and the children are not given food.

• Children in Jail• An article showed that children are neglected in

some jails. The police tortured the children the children until they admit the crime they were accused of, even though they were innocent. During interrogation, you were bound with cords, beaten, burned with cigarettes or other chemicals, or you were cut with blades.

Child Soldiers

• Child Soldiers• An article showed that Maoists should release all child

soldiers. Human Rights Watch urged child protection agencies to release the children. More than 30,000 Maoists are registered, and 6000-9000 of them are children younger than 18 years old. In a conference, 58 states tried to put an end to children in armed forces. Governments agreed to have new guidelines like “Paris Principles”. In February 2007, a report showed the there were 14 year olds who were given weapons. The Maoists still took in children after signing the peace agreement.

What is the CRC?

• The CRC is an international human rights treaty created with a goal to protect children. They have done a lot for many children with 191 states dedicated to the treaty. This treaty ensures that children have their own rights, different from everybody else’s rights, and these rights cannot be broken. The CRC has 4 major principles; the 2nd and most important is that children have the right of development and safety. Only 20 countries actually have children rights laws and the League of Nations is hoping to improve this. This league is forming strong international partnerships. Over 3 million children have been saved due to these partnerships. These two things are hoping to reduce child abuse and HIV/AIDS by 25% by 2010.

Children and Diseases

• Many children all around the world are living without proper sanitization. Since the kids don’t have proper sanitization many diseases are spreading, like E-coli. Over 1 billion people in the past 14 years have been given proper sanitization, but still 980 million still don’t have it. Children are very vulnerable to many of these diseases caused by improper sanitization so it is very important that they are helped.

• Children all over the world are being treated very badly. According to the UNSG violence against children has gotten much worse in the past couple of years. Children are being treated very badly and when they do something wrong they get beaten, because of this UNICEF and IPU have launched a project to stop child violence. UNICEF works in many countries, and deals with child violence in almost all of them. The UN is helping abused and overworked children go to school, this has reduced children that aren’t in school by 500 million.

To give you guys proof here is one real story about a girl called Amergo.

• The story of Amergo• Amergo was a kid living on the streets whose

mother didn’t want her. She used to collect trash, but soon she got a disease from that. She also tried working in an ice cream shop, but the tubs were too heavy for her. Now she shines shoes, she doesn’t have a place to stay in and she is risking her life because it gets very cold in the winter.

And a true life story about Alice• The story of Alice• Alice was a child whose parents

lived in a village. She used to go to school, but they would beat the children, so she stopped. One day her aunt offered her the chance to stay with her. Her mom said that if she wanted to eat properly, she should stay with her aunt. In her aunt’s house, Alice was treated like a slave, she was never given a day off and was not paid. She was beat with an electric wire and got hurt badly, but she never got any medical care.

What can YOU do to help?• 1. We can talk to our government and suggest

that they ask more fundraising boxes in shops for were people can drop used items in and coins. When we ask the government we also need to make sure that the money and other donations does get sent to who needs it. You may be asking how does this help? How many of you guys have ever donated some coins or tabs? See many people have done this which makes an effort!

• 2. Sponsor a child and donate 50RM a month which will provide the child access to safe shelter, drinking water and food for a month.

What else can YOU do?

• 3. Get involved in “International Children’s Day of Broadcasting” on December 10th.

• 4. Don’t be afraid to visit some orphanages and ask people who work there how you can help.
