• At regular intervals battle-weary young men were sent to friendly neighboring countries to recover from the fighting. Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Thailand were the main destinations. The closest country was Thailand and it was also the most popular.

• For many local Thai it was like winning the lottery. Young Thai women flocked to Bangkok in their thousands to provide comfort and sexual experiences for the young soldiers.
