Reduce Reuse Recycle — Be a Good Earth Friend
What will you and the dayhome children do this month to reduce your consumption, reuse what you
already have, recycle and be a good earth friend.
How did you do this year? Were you able to change some of your habits by reducing, reusing and
recycling? If you wish you could have done more…. Don’t despair… any day is a good day to start being a
“good earth friend.” Why not start fresh with your Christmas gift list. Here are some ideas:
• Make Christmas gifts with things you already have at home
• Consider re-gifting, that is passing on a gift you received that you do not need
• Give battery free gifts (discarded batteries are an environmental hazard)
• Choose gifts from recycled sources
• Reuse gift bags if they’re still in good condition
• Give simple gifts
• Make cookies or purchase other “edible” Christmas gifts

Puffy Paint
Thank you to all of you who participated in
the “Try it ~ You’ll Love It!” workshop on
November 21. We hope you had fun creating
and exploring the different activities and have
had the opportunity to try some of them with
the children in your dayhomes. Below is the
“puffy paint” recipe.
1 cup of flour
1 cup of salt
1 cup of water
MIX WELL (a hand mixer or blender also works
well). Add food coloring or liquid tempera paint
as desired. Stir until smooth and pour into
squeeze bottles.
Add more or less water to reach the desired
thickness, keeping in mind that smaller children
may have more difficulties squeezing the
bottles. You can also make larger or smaller
amounts of the recipe; simply use equal
amounts of each of the three ingredients.
Paint on cardboard and let dry overnight.

The years before five last the rest of their lives.

Games and activities for you and your child
Comfort
Making a small, simple family album with a page for each
member of the family can help your child develop a
sense of belonging. Attach pictures of events or their
favourite food, colour or activity to each page. Share
your family album with the dayhome.
The Art Park: Find a wall or door where your child’s
favourite artwork can be “parked.” All of you will feel
pride in these wonderful creations.
Play
Children love building and creative activities using
blocks or cardboard boxes. You and your child can have
a building centre with a variety of building materials
including blocks, boxes and cardboard. Don’t forget:
knocking down can be as fun as building up.
Messy play with water, clay, mud or sand is fun too.
Other activities include making and creating things with
his or her hands. Scissors, crayons and paints and paper
are important tools for the preschool child.
Teach
Cooperative games that involve other children such as
“Tag” or “Simon Says,” provide an opportunity to play
with others while following simple rules.
Matching and naming pictures by faces, colours, shapes,
sizes and feelings help your child begin to put objects
into different classes and enhance the beginning of
abstract thinking.
Reading activities shared by you and your child provide a
chance to enjoy familiar and new stories and to
introduce new words.
Counting games and songs can be part of the daily
routine or can be more formal, with games and songs
such as Five Green and Speckled Frogs, Alice the Camel
or Three Little Monkeys.
