Poverty and social disadvantage

Poverty is the greatest danger to the healthy development of children and young people

• The child/young person’s diet may not be good.

• A child/young person’s living conditions may be poor

• The child may be smaller at birth

• Children and young people may have to go without meals and clothes

Questions:If a child’s living conditions are not good, how would their

work and education suffer?

Page 12: Child and young person development

Housing

Low-income families are more likely to live

in:

Homes which are damp and/or unheatedRisk of infections

Densely populated and unattractive neighbourhoodsFew gardens and play areas

Overcrowded conditionsSome families housed in ‘hotels’, B&Bs etc: shared facilities

Questions:What are the effects for children of living in poor housing?

Page 14: Child and young person development

Parenting

• The health and lifestyle of a parent/carer can have a real effect on a child’s development, e.g. mum suffers from depression, dad is violent, mum is an alcoholic, dad is a drug addict.

• Sometimes children have to take on a carer’s role.

Page 16: Child and young person development

Parenting• Parents may not ‘be available’ (physically and

emotionally) for their children.

• Children may suffer physical neglect.

• Parents may not show much love and affection

• Some living conditions may be poor and/or unsafe.Questions:How would a child’s own health be affected if theyadopt a parent/ carer’s role?

Page 17: Child and young person development

Think back to the nurseries you all planned in groups last week.....Imagine the children in your nursery. You are now going to think about factors affecting

the development of those children....
