3. REQUIREMENTS .

3.1 Bid sa~le approval (type 1 only).- Tw individually packaged IMIIE@eacontahhg a minimum of 100 tabletg each, repmmntative of the productwhich the bidder proposed to furnish, shall be submitted to the contractingofficer prior to the bid opening. One s~le shall be tested to the ●xtentnecessary to properly ●val~te the bid. Md s~le testing shall includepanel te~tlng for palatability (see 4.4.2). Approval shail be in ●ctomlancewith ●a~abliahed standards. The other senple shall serve as a standardreference sa@e for determining cfmplimce of deliveries.

.3.2 Materlals.- AU materials shall be of goodgrade and shall be edible,

clcm, ~oleao= and free fxwrietidence of insect infestationorocher objectionable foreignmatter.

3.2.1 Sugar.- Sugar shall be white refined cane or beet sugar, or acombination of both.

3.2.2 Dextrose.- Deactroseshall be refined anhydrous or hydrated mon-osaccharide.

3.2.3 Corn ayrw.- Com syrup shall be a clarified and concentrated●queous solution of the product obtained by the partial hydrolysis of mmstarch. Dry com eymap solids may be used.

3.2.4 IUmmrln~.- Flavoringe shall consist of essential oils, spec~fiedin Food Chemical Codex (FCC), used either singly or in conbinati~nwith othermaterial and synthetic oils and flavors.

3.3 Mnished product.-

3.3.1 ~ I.- ~pe I gum shall consist of a center and a candy coating.The centers 8hall cons$st of sucrose or dextrose (or a combination of both),corn syrup, water-inaolubie chwing - beat, softening and plasticizingingredients, md flwor. G=. gelatin, starch, or other protective materialamay be applied to the cente= prior to coating. The candy coating shall beapplied by the hot or cold pan =thod. l%e coating shall cover the centerscompletely and shall be free from pits and cracks. A suitable g182e orpolish may be used to finish the pieces. Eat!!piece shall weigh not leasthan 1.4 grams. The flavor of the gun (coating plus center) shall be in anamunt sufficient to impart a pleasing characteristictaste sensation.There shall be an inmediate release of the specified flavor, and after 20minuteu of chewing, it shall have a residual characteristic flavor. The gum

.4,4.2 Palatabllity.- Tests for palatability, as required, shall be pe~,-

fomed in accordance with 4.4.2.1 through 4.4.2.4, as epplic~le. Each fla~rshall be considered a separate product.

4.4.2.1 Procedure.- Samples shall be served to a consmer type panel.The panel w~ers ●hall rate each s~le on a 9-point hedonic scale (see

tablebelw), graduated in successive degr@e$ of l~ke and dislike. Thes-lea shall be presented successively with a minimum interval of 30seconds between samples, in controlled orders, so that each s~le isserved an equal number of times in each te~oral pusition. Each subjectshall rate from 2 to 6 samples at a test session. Panelist evaluatingpeppe=nt or speamint flavored gum shall be Iidted to not mre thantvo samplesper ●msion, but all subjectsshall ratethe s- nuAer of ‘48aQ@e8 is 8 glveamaslon. The sdjects shall testwithoutInterferencefrom each other or fmm outsiders.

4.4.2.2 Selection of reference standardc.- Samples muplylng vith the re-

quirements ;~-this specificationwil~sted at the same sessions by a con-;umet panel yielding not less than 40 rating per sa~le. Tests will be

cxmhcted according to 4.4.2.1. Sumplea which are acceptable and can be usedfor reference stand~rd, shall be those s~les that are not significantlydifferent from the highest ranking at the 5-percent level of significance.Reference samples shall be stored in closed containers and held at ● temper-●ture of qqmxhaately 40°F. I!hereference standards for any given testsession shall be selected randomly from mrmng the ●vailable referenceetandards.

4.4.2.3 Bid saaple appmval ●- Bid samples nhall be tested along withreference standards es preacrlbed in 4.4.2.1. A minimum of 24 responsesshall be obtained for each pre=ard s~le. one or mre reference standardshall be seined in each preaward session. &y preaward sample which has amean rating significantlylower, at the 5-percent level of significan~,than that of the reference saqle shall be rejected. Approved saaples shallbe held in closed containers at approximately G@”F. to serve ss referencestandards for testing of &liveries as specified in L.4.2.4.

4.4.2.4 Delive~ ~.- Whtn 6p?Cified (see 6.1), delivery s~les shall be—.- —tested as specified ~n 4.4.2.1, with the bid sample of the same supplierserving as a reference standard (see 4.4.2.3). A minimum of 20 ratings shallbe obtained for the reference s+le and for each delivery sanple. Any deliv-ery s~le which has a =an rating signiflcant~y ~ower, at the s-percentlevel of significance, than that of the reference sample, shall be rejected.

4.4.3 Basia weight of paper.- Baais weight of paper ohall be determinedin accordace with method 5022 of F’EXHTD-101.

4.4.4 Paraffin in paper.- Paraffin in paper shall be determineddance with =thod 6018 of ~STD-101.

5. PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY

If the bottomfl~ps of the container are closed by stitching, the case liner shall be pro-tected by 8 chipboard pad placed between the case limer and the stitches. Thecase liner shall be protected fmrn stitches in the manufacturers joint bycovering the stitch~s w%th a strip of pressure-sensitive tape.

5.2.2 Level 11.- The shipping cmtainer shall be a fiberboardbox constructed,closed an~orced in aecordmce with style WC, V3c, tf3s,UY V4s, ofPPP-B-636. The ohipping container shall be pm-dad with ● waterproof caaeliner as specified In 5.2.1.

5.2.2.1 When specified (see 6.1 and 6.3) the shipping container specifiedin 5.2.2 shall be reinforced with nonmetallic strapping or pressure-sensitiveadhesive, filament-=inforced tape in accordance with the appendix of PPP-B-636,except that - reinforcing ban& may be wed, one lengthwlae and one girtlwlse.
