If Edward Scissorhands had a penchant for gumdrops, his yard might very well look like that of Jody and Jack Jennings of 9401 Tea Rose Trail, winners of September’s Yard of the Month! We should all be grateful of the effort Jody and Jack put into their yard, because it is the first yard prominently on display to all who enter the neighborhood. In fact, their home was the builder’s model home for precisely that reason. Their yard positively influences people who are looking to buy a new home in our neighborhood; therefore it helps to increase our property values. Since purchasing the home 17 years ago, Jody and Jack have maintained the bushes and trees they inherited from the original landscaping, and have also included some additions such as colorful crape myrtles. It is clear from talking to the Jennings that they gave much thought to each new item placed in the yard, paying particular attention to ease of maintenance, water needs, and suitability to this area. But don’t think that ease of maintenance is really on top of their list because they shape each and every bush almost monthly using electric trimmers, which takes a lot of time. We tried to convince them to try some fun animal topiary shapes since they already have the precise sculpting skills of Edward Scissorhands—maybe we will see a bear or rabbit-shaped hedge in the future? The Jennings diligently maintain their yard and have used Dillo Dirt, an environmentally friendly compost made by the City of Austin to fertilize their landscape. Even though it is not as prominently on display, the Jennings work just as hard on their beautiful back yard bordered by crape myrtles with white, light pink and fuchsia blossoms. Besides bragging rights, Jody and Jack are also recipients of a new perk (or maybe we should call it a “perc”) to winning the YOM award, a $20.00 gift card, generously donated by Steve Baer of the Texenza Coffee shop nearby. A special thanks goes to Texenza, a locally owned cafe near the Randalls that is only a 6 minute walk on the trail at the end of Tea Rose Trail-- check it out! Congratulations to Jody and Jack Jennings For Winning our Yard of the Month Award! If Edward Scissorhands had a penchant for gumdrops, his yard

might very well look like that of Jody and Jack Jennings of 9401 Tea Rose Trail, winners of September’s Yard of the Month!

The Jennings diligently maintain

their yard and have used Dillo Dirt, an environmentally friendly compost made by the City of Austin to fertilize their landscape. COWAN ELEMENTARYCowan School Day / 7:45-2:45

COVINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOLSchool Day / 8:15-3:30

BOWIE HIGH SCHOOLSchool Day / 8:50-4:15

By the time you receive this newsletter school will be back in session. Keep an eye out for our students getting on or off the bus before or after school. As the school year begins there are many different fundraising events going on so please support our students to help them raise money for their individual clubs and the school PTA’s. Supporting the students helps the individual schools and clubs in purchasing the items they need to run the school programs more effectively, especially in the climate we are in and all the cutbacks in our school district. Or for the events they want to have on awareness of social issues, safety, and other fun gatherings for students and parents.

Happy and Safe School Year To All!

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

SAVE ME!Have you seen these in your kitchen

and wondered what to do with them? Here is the answer. Clip them off the package and put them in the dropbox at the front entrance marquee! They will then be donated to our local schools to provide much needed money. Each box top is worth ten cents to a neighborhood school. It may not sound like much but if the whole neighborhood saves them, it could add up to big money. Here is a brief history of the Box Top$ program.

Box Top$ are collected All Year Long,so start clipping & keep clipping!

Cherry Creek ViewFIREANT AWARENESS

The second week of September is Fire Ant Awareness Week. While there hasn’t been a lot of fire ant activity lately due to weather, be aware that they will be back. When it’s hot and dry outside, people may have fire ant activity and get stung but not see mounds to treat. Under hot and dry conditions, fire ants dig deep into the soil to find cooler temperatures and to be closer to the water table. Fire ant mounds often return after rainfall or with regular irrigation.

When temperatures are at the sweltering range, it’s a good idea to bait for fire ants since the mounds may not be seen. Fire ants will still be out to forage for food and will pick up bait as a food and take it back to the colony to share with others. It is best to bait in the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. Make sure that bait is fresh- it should have a nutty smell- and that it does not get wet from rainfall or irrigation. Read the label for the proper application rate and use the correct application equipment. Also, consider sharing some bait with your neighbors so their fire ants don’t move into your yard. For more information or help with identification, contact Wizzie Brown, Texas AgriLife Extension Service Program Specialist at 512.854.9600.

STAGE 1 WATER USE RULES ARE NOW IN EFFECT

Austin Water reminds its customers to remain mindful about their water use as Central Texas continues to experience drought conditions. Stage 1 water restrictions remain in effect for all Austin Water customers. Stage 1 restrictions require all residential and commercial customers adhere to the two-day a week watering schedule.

ALL OUTDOOR WATERING MUST BEDONE BEFORE 10 A.M. AND AFTER 7 P.M.

•Residential customers with addresses ending in an even number can water on Thursday and Sunday.

•Residential customers whose addresses end in an odd number can water on Wednesday and Saturday.

•Commercial and multifamily customers can water on Tuesday and Friday.

•Additional details on Stage 1 restrictions can be found at waterwiseaustin.org.

THERE ARE THREE TRIGGERS TO MOVE TOSTAGE 2 WATER RESTRICTIONS

•peak day usage for Austin reaches 270 million gallons a day (mgd) in one day

•260 mgd for three consecutive days.•There is also a lake-level trigger when Lake Buchanan

& Lake Travis combined levels reach 900,000 acre feet.

Austin Water peak day usage for the month of May did not exceed 182 mgd, well below the stage 2 trigger. Combined lake levels of Buchanan and Travis are currently at 1.4 million acre feet. LCRA does not expect to reach the 900,000 acre feet trigger this year unless there is no significant rainfall. However, without rain, LCRA predicts the lakes could fall below 900,000 acre feet this fall.

Stage 2 restrictions include outdoor watering restricted to once a week on the designated watering day unless using a handheld hose or bucket along with other restrictions including but not limited to car washing, outdoor fountains, not serving water at restaurants unless requested by a customer.

Austin Water commends the community for its water conservation efforts during the past year. Becoming a waterwise customer is easy-just know your 3Cs, Commit, Calculate and Conserve. Commit to a waterwise lifestyle, calculate water usage with Austin Water's online calculator and conserve 10 percent on your daily water usage.

This month’s program is a performance/lecture-demonstration of two of India’s classical dance forms, Mohiniyattam & Bharatanatyam by Sarita Warrier and her daughter, Arati. Dance is not just a series

of steps to be performed mechanically but instead a quest to allow the ethos of the dance with its myriad facets to live within the dancer and to be expressed in all its movements, postures, facial expressions and hand gestures. Bharatanatyam comes from the Sanskrit words bhãva (expression) , rãga (melody), tãla (rhythm) and nãtya (dance) and is expressed with the help of rhythm and lyrics. The meaning of the lyrics and the mood are expressed through body movements, elaborate hand gestures and facial expressions.

Mohiniyattam is a graceful dance meant to be performed as a solo recital by a woman. The term is a combination of the Sanskrit words mohiní and atta and means ‘fascinating woman with graceful movements.’
