Agricultural and Nutritional Laboratories Research Process

Progress report of 2005 / 2006 E.C. (2013 / 2014 G.C.)

The activities conducted under the Agricultural and Nutritional Laboratories Research Process of Kulumsa Agricultural Research Center has been summarized in two categories within two periods from July to March and March to June as indicated below.

1. Soil, Plant and Grain Analysis

The chemistry laboratory of Kulumsa Agricultural Research Center has analyzed a total of 5,596 soil, plant and grain samples from July 2013 to March 2014. The parameters, sample

types and amount, the procedures used and the periods of analysis have been summarized in table 1 below.

Table 1. Summary of physical and chemical analysis conducted for soil, plant and grain samples at KARC

2. Laboratory Renovation

As of mid of March to June 2006, the physical and chemical laboratory of KARC, has been closed for renovation. Very great thanks to the Agricultural and Nutritional Laboratories Research Directorate of EIAR, Kulumsa Agricultural research center management and

members of KARC's physical and chemical laboratory, the renovation activity have been successfully completed at a cost of 611,160.18 birr.

Brief summary of the major renovation works have been outlined below.

Epoxy floor finish work was done for 164m2 area of the laboratory. Hence, the old floor was fully changed and became conducive for laboratory works.

The laboratory rooms were demolished, restructured and reconstructed with

aluminum partitions walls in such a way that eases and specializes laboratory

works. Old wooden doors have been changed with aluminum doors controlled

with door stoppers.

The previous ceiling was very old and let in rain water to main laboratory. It,

therefore, was changed with PVC ceiling and frame, which covered 164m2.

Old cemented walls were renewed using paints

All windows, which were transparent mirrors, of the laboratory covered with

anti-glare sticker in order to prevent reflections and unwanted sunrays.

Procurement of office facilities (4 in 1 table and swivel chair), laboratory supplies

(cupboard, laboratory stool, dixion shelf and laboratory cart), ICT equipments,

stationary, electric materials, laundry machine, iron and iron table were

conducted.

Access road (32.4m*4.2m = L*W) to main laboratory constructed using cobble

stones.

Pictorial presentation of the laboratory renovation activity has been shown below.
