Charley Molnar, UMass Head Football CoachAs the UMass football team prepares to embark on its biggest transition in program history, Charley Molnar will draw upon 28 years of experience to lead the

Minutemen into the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Mid-American Conference. Molnar was officially named the 29th head coach of the UMass football program on Thursday, December 8, 2011 at the new home of the Minutemen - Gillette Stadium.

A veteran offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Molnar was part of prolific offensive attacks at Notre Dame, Cincinnati, and Central Michigan. In his time at those schools, the Morristown, N.J. native helped them to a 59-20 record and seven straight bowl games, including two BCS Bowls. In 2009, Cincinnati finished the regular season 12-0, and ranked 3rd in the BCS rankings while winning the Big East Conference Championship and an appearance in the Sugar Bowl.

“I am extremely pleased that Charley has decided to join the University of Massachusetts as our next head football coach,” said Director of Athletics John McCutcheon. “His background, energy, commitment to student-athletes and desire to be part of a growing

program clearly separated him from an outstanding pool of candidates. I know that once the UMass community has a chance to meet him they will realize how fortunate we are to have Charley as our head football coach.”

Molnar joins the Minutemen after two seasons with Notre Dame as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. In his time with the Fighting Irish, the Morristown, N.J., native has helped the program to an 8-4 record in 2011 and an appearance in the Champs Sports Bowl along with an 8-5 record in 2010 and an appearance in the Sun Bowl.

“This is an opportunity I worked for my whole career and there is no limit to my excitement on this day,” said Molnar. “When John McCutcheon called to offer me the position, I knew this dream was becoming a reality and I said when can I start. I have a vision for this program into the future and we are going to do nothing but great things at the University of Massachusetts.”

There will be a mandatory coaches meeting at 8:30 am. Check in will not be allowed unless full team is in Amherst and every team has a representative to accompany them.
