The Way to Clufffalo, 2011, acrylic on canvas 39 x 80 inches
In 2011 I returned to using “big fingers” (padson the ends of sticks) to make paintings. This isthe technique that I used to make the works inthis exhibition and catalog.
The Way to Clufffalo, makes the loosest of reference to my commute to and from Westerly,Rhode Island and Buffalo in the months beforethe exhibition of the same name, curated bySandra Firmin at the University at Buffalo ArtGallery at the Center for the Arts in 2012. Veroand Vini were begun on the day of the birth ofmy grand-twins, Veronica and Vincent. Coullioure
2 and Coullioure 3 reference Matisse paintings ofthe village in southern France. Deposition 1mines Titian’s Deposition of Christ. Idun is acapriccio. Posto Juno and Santa Juno riff onTitian’s Sacred and Profane Love. Watch Hill,Misquamicutt and Weekapaug are my farewell tothe beaches near Westerly. After Dark 1 and AfterDark 2 were made on the night that HurricaneSandy hit New Jersey, New York and NewEngland. Arebeegeed and Pinklished reflect my loveof Hans Hofmann’s art. Cool Tan, Is This Not aMan, and Cattaraugus are the last three paintingsmade in Rhode Island.
