• Every year in December we celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ: It’s Xmas time!• How do persons in Britain celebrate this holiday?• They send Christmas cards.• They watch nativity plays.• There have huge family get-togethers. Charles Boyd Bowman

ADVENT

• Advent is the time of ready for the arrival of Christmas. Through Advent arrangements for Christmas begin:• People beautify their homes with ornaments and mistletoe!

• Kissing under the mistletoe is a tradition!!

CHRISTMAS EVE

• It is the day previous to Christmas Day. It is the evening when Father Christmas comes! Kids hang up stockings above the fireplace

• Father Christmas and his elves make all the products in his workshop in the North Pole.• Then he flies around the world in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer

CHRISTMAS DAY

• This is the favorite day for kids. • They wake up very earlier in the morning to open the presents!• Children find their presents under the Christmas tree.• How do the British beautify their Christmas trees?

Why Do People Exchange Gifts?

• The tradition began with the gifts that the wisemen brought to Jesus.• After seeing Jesus with his mother, they exposed up their treasures of gold and of incense and

myrrh.• However, no one was in the habit of giving complex gifts until late 1800’s.• The Santa Claus story mixed with a retail phenomenon has made gift giving the central focus of

the Christmas tradition.

Who Is This Santa Claus Person?

• The first well-known gift-giver, St. Nicholas lived in Turkey about 300A.D• He was orphaned and later became a priest.• He gave to the desperate, especially children.• He later became a bishop - hence the hat, long gown, white beard and red cape.• When the Church started to celebrate Christmas, St. Nick was incorporated into the season.

Why 12 Days of Christmas?

• The 12 days between Dec. 25 th & Jan. 6th• Jan. 6th shows the day Jesus was baptized and the day he was visited by the wisemen.• In the past, the lifestyle was to give gifts during the twelve days instead of all on one day.

• People decorate their Christmas Trees with:– Bells– Candles– Lights– Tinsels– Baubles– Ornaments– Candy canes– A star or an angel at the very top of the tree
