Charity Investment Training for Trustees and Investment Seminar02

Part one Trustee training What every charity trustee needs to know about their legal and investment responsibilities in layman’s terms: arming yourself with questions to tackle your advisers with! This training is based on the Foundation Course that we run on behalf of the Charity Finance Group (CFG). In recent years we have trained over 3,000 trustees and finance directors. We will use the recently launched 18th Edition of the Sarasin & Partners Compendium of Investment as the ‘text book’.

09.30-09.55 Registration and coffee

09.55-10.00 Welcome and introduction John Handford

10.00-10.30 Role of Charity Trustees – Legal Responsibilities Godfrey Smallman, from Wrigleys Solicitors LLP, will comment on the duties of Charity Trustees in relation to the investment of charitable funds, including reflections on some aspects which are of particular concern to the Charity Commission.

10.30-13.00 Understanding your investments Even though the day-to-day management of a charity’s investments is usually delegated, trustees retain the ultimate responsibility and liability. When matching an investment objective and benchmarks to a charity’s wider goals, an understanding of the investment landscape is important. Robert Boddington and Oliver Bates will cover the following topics:

• A thorough review of different asset classes charities invest in • A history of endowment returns and sustainable spending level • Future returns: Realistic assumptions • What to consider when creating a strategic investment policy • Implementing your investment policy: appointing (and managing!) a manager

This is designed as an interactive session: questions are welcome as we work through the subject matter. There will be a 10-minute leg stretch at an appropriate moment.

13.00-14.00 Buffet lunch All welcome to attend

Part two Investment seminar – Snakes & Ladders

14.00-14.05 Welcome and introduction John Handford

14.05-14.20 Setting up the board: Long-term returns and sustainable withdrawals Robert Boddington considers the key messages from the latest edition of the Sarasin & Partners

Compendium of Investment. What have investors achieved in the past and what returns are likely over the period ahead?

14.20-14.35 Surprises for the unwary investor The assumption that long-term trends will revert to the mean is all well and good. However, one-off

events and paradigm shifts can have major consequences. Graeme Bruce considers what might trip up the unwary investor. Is landing on a snake equally bad for everyone?

14.35-14.50 Climbing ladders: the case for above-average returns Despite several years of attractive returns, it would not be unusual if portfolios benefited from

a further rise in equities and other assets. Aram Compton analyses how markets could surprise on the upside and where profitable opportunities might lie.

14.50-15.00 Break

15.00-15.20 Selecting stocks with thematic credentials Join a Sarasin & Partners stock review meeting with our analysts and fund managers,

considering which stocks should be included in our clients’ portfolios. Will you agree with their analysis and conclusions?

15.20-15.40 A numbers game: how inflation influences real returns and our tactical approach to the year ahead Paul Cooper reviews where we are in global markets, how inflation is likely to influence returns over the period ahead and how our portfolios are currently positioned.

15.40 Tea
