Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller Is A Strong Supporter Of Catholic Charismatic Renewal

Recently, I (Fr. Bob) had a meeting with Archbishop Gustavo. He had wonderful news to share:

At the Pentecost Vigil Mass at St. Rose of Lima Church at 7:00 pm the Archbishop will consecrate the

Archdiocese of San Antonio to the Holy Spirit! You will be hearing more about this. The archbishop strongly believes that we need a greater emphasis on the Holy Spirit in the Church. He encourages the Catholic Center for Charismatic Renewal and all Charismatic Renewal groups to help the archdiocese in its awareness and openness to the Holy Spirit. He believes that we need groups in our parishes that meet regularly, pray together regularly, and seek to grow with Jesus and the Holy Spirit week by week. He encourages us and challenges us to do more in the archdiocese, especially as we consecrate the archdiocese to the Holy Spirit and prepare for the Jubi-lee Celebration of Catholic Charismatic Renewal in 2017. Please invite people to come to our conference, Exercising the Gifts of the Spirit: Live It! Love It! Do It!, on March 21-22 at St. Mary Magdalen Church and Hall. The Archbishop will be celebrating the confer-ence Mass on Saturday. We want to turn out in force to let him know our appreciation for consecrating the archdiocese to the Holy Spirit, and let him know that we are supporting him. Come and celebrate this historic time of grace! Shalom Media will be video taping the talks in English at our Conference. Beginning on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, 2014, Shalom Media will begin broadcasting as the first Catholic Charismatic Renewal Television Network. They also will be hosting on September 20-21, 2014 a Shalom Festival in San Anto-nio at Our Lady of the Lake University. You will be hearing more about this in the future.

Conference Follow-up Continue growing in the graces of the conference by coming to a Night of Renewal on Saturday, April 5, 2014 (7:00 pm), at Jubilee Hall of St. Mary Magdalen Church. The evening will be sponsored by the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple and St. Mary Magdalen’s English Prayer Group. The theme is “Living as a Beloved Disciple in the Power of the Holy Spirit.” Fr. Bob, Fr. George, Fr. Will, Fr. Joseph Mary, Bro. Gabe, Bro. Sean, Novice Daniel and Novice Reuben invite you to share with our community our goal of being beloved disciples empowered by the Holy Spirit! I am thankful for all the people who made our Conference Kickoff Mass and lunch a great blessing. Thanks to the Spanish and English Service Committees, our Youth Ministry, and the St. Mary Magdalen Prayer Group workers who put the meal together.

News from the English Service Commi ee By: Karen Adams, Co-Chair

Our regional conference is just about 3 weeks away. As you know, this year’s conference theme is Exercising the Gi s of the Spirit…Live, it, Love it, Do it! This theme was chosen because we want to emphasize that all of us have received gi s from the Holy Spirit. It is natural for many of us to exercise these gi s within the context of our prayer groups, Nights of Renewal, or during char-isma c conferences. We know that these are safe envi-ronments where it’s perfectly acceptable to flow in the gi s.

However, there is a broader context in which we should be con nually exercising the gi s of the Holy Spirit. That is within the context of our daily lives. Many op-portuni es arise daily to stop and pray with people who are going through hard mes, to lay hands on someone (with their permission) to pray for healing, or to give a word of encouragement received through Word of Knowledge or Prophecy. But there’s risk involved in reaching out to those who may not know the Lord, may not understand the charisma c gi s, or may be totally disinterested. We are hesitant to approach others for fear of offending someone or fear of being rejected.

Nonetheless, we are called to offer the gi s we’ve re-ceived to others. If they’re open to our offer, God is able to work through us to help another or plant a seed. If our offer to help is rejected, at least we’ve tried. God sees our hearts and our desire to help His people. The more we use our gi s, the stronger and more pow-erful we grow in them. Again, this is not to our person-al benefit, but to the benefit of God’s people and His Kingdom. If you’ve not yet registered for the confer-ence, go to the website: h p://cccrsa.net/charisma ccenter/2014-conference and register on-line or download a registra on form and mail it in. Also, invite as many people as you can. If you have family members or friends who have fallen away from prac cing the Faith, or have le the Church altogether, this conference will reintroduce them to a Church on fire with the love of God. Invite them, and let God do the work in them. My Co-Chairs, Carmen Frankel, Mario Or z, and I look forward to seeing you at the conference. May God richly bless you.

Nights of Renewal

Nights of Renewal were created for the purpose of bringing together people involved with the Archdiocese of San Antonio Charismatic Renewal Prayer Groups, and other in-terested people, for a time of renewal in the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Center for Charis-matic Renewal holds 8 Nights of Renewal per year. The gatherings include time for song, praise and worship, teaching, experiencing the touch of the Holy Spirit and time to socialize. The San Antonio prayer groups are divided into 4 zones. Each zone con-ducts 2 Nights of Renewal a year in different parts of the city. Everyone is invited to come from all the areas of the city. Come and be renewed in the Holy Spirit!

MANIFESTATIONS:

Charisms are manifestations of the Spirit, show-ing forth and demonstrating the presence of the Holy Spirit: “To each individual the manifesta-tion of the Spirit is given for some benefit” (1 Cor 12:7). They mediate God’s love, presence, power, and guidance. When a charism is active in a person, people see not only that individu-al’s acts of service, but experience God reach-ing out to them through that person. They expe-rience that “God is really in your midst” (1 Cor 14:25). Some examples can help to clarify this point. At times I have to set up the chairs for an event. I do it because “somebody has to do it,” and sometimes I wish that someone else would be available to do it, so I would not have to do it. It is good that I still do the service, but I am not manifesting the charism of service. People who are operating in the charism of service are hap-py to help out in any way they can; do it with joy; and ask if there is any other way that they can help. This person is manifesting the attitudes of “Jesus, the servant,” who came not to be served, but to serve, and give his life for others. The Holy Spirit is manifesting Jesus’ attitude of service through this person. When I preach or teach I want to manifest the charisms of preaching and teaching. When someone comes up to me after a presentation and says “I enjoyed your talk; you were so ener-getic, funny and clever; you made it interesting,” I am not sure whether I was manifesting the charism of preaching/teaching. The focus of the person was on me and my presentation. However, if someone comes up to me after a presentation and starts explaining to me how the Lord was convicting them, calling them, or enlightening them through what I said, then I have a better confirmation that the charism of preaching or teaching was operating. They were not focusing mainly on me as a presenter, but experiencing the Holy Spirit manifesting himself to them through the speaker. When charisms are operating, people experience God working in their midst, rather than being focused on the person offering the service.

Charisms are “manifestations of the Spirit” in which God is working in various “forms of ser-vice” and “workings” produced by God in every-one (1 Cor 12:4-6).

FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL FOLLOWER:

Paul uses the words “each individual” and “everyone.” The charisms are for each and every follower of Jesus, each member of the body of Christ. There is an expectation that each person who follows Jesus will manifest the presence of the Spirit to others. Every part of the body of Christ with each person’s spiritual gift is needed for the good of the Church (1 Cor 12:14-31). The gifts work in harmony with each other. What may seem to be a less dramatic gift (service and administration versus healing and miracles), may be more needed in a particular situation. It is important to help people to understand that charisms can be active in every aspect of our daily lives. Every follower of Jesus can exercise the gifts every day as the Holy Spirit leads and empowers them! St. Paul’s teaches that God gives some charisms (apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher) “to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Eph 4:11-12). People who are given charisms for these minis-tries have a role in encouraging and enabling all of God’s people to be equipped with charisms for the work of ministry. A carpenter who goes to do his job without his equipment is severely handi-capped in accomplishing his task. In a similar way followers of Jesus who seek to serve others without the equipment of the charisms are se-verely handicapped in accomplishing their minis-try. Every member of the body of Christ should be helped to understand the particular equip-ment of charisms that they need for the tasks and ministries that God has called them. Then, we are to help people to receive these charisms as God’s empowerment for them in order to do God’s ministry. Jesus told his apostles after the resurrection not to go forth until they are “clothed with power from on high” (Lk 24:49).

Charisms (Spiritual Gifts) are Essential and are for Everyone - Fr. Bob Hogan, BBD
