Builders, Blogs and all things Bright and Beautifulthanks to all of you who joined us for our community garden gathering in october. the sun shone and we shared chapter honey, parsley pesto, chocolate and beetroot brownies and the last of the runner beans, yellow courgettes and green plum tomatoes were all up for grabs.

Using funding from biffaward and the people’s millions (part of the big lottery fund) we’re about to start work on landscaping our frontage so that we can really crack on with planting for next year’s crop. the building work will continue through november and the early part of December so will be finished (weather permitting) in plenty of time for the spring.

thanks to all the canton community gardeners who’ve put in enormous amounts of free time to get the garden up and running, organise the many events throughout the year and look after the chapter bees. We’ll be continuing free honey tastings throughout november usually from 4.30pm on Wednesdays when mark’s bread set up their regular weekly stall. mark’s bread, chapter honey… what’s not to love?

talking about love — we love blogs. if you do too, you can vote in the people’s choice category and see who wins here on thursday 27 october as part of the annual Wales blog awards. We’ll also be live streaming the event so that you can watch on your desktop, laptop or in the theatre foyer.

The WITH Collective ResidentFri 30 Sept — Sun 6 Nov • Gwe 30 Medi — Sul 6 Tachresident is a witty and engaging rumination on the role of the artist in a rapidly changing and blurred cultural landscape.

for their exhibition, the With Collective have moved a large section of our caffi bar into the gallery and have installed a paying turnstile into another section of the exhibition so that visitors must choose whether to pay to see the remainder of the show and to receive an unlimited edition With artwork.

these jarring and provocative interventions have created a site for a series of unfolding (yet invisible) performances where With are engineering a number of delegated actions on behalf of visitors to the exhibition. as well as posing timely questions about the ongoing sustainability of the arts sector, resident explores the nature of participation, memory and responsibility through a series of multilayered new works.

since its inception in 2002, the With Collective has received critical praise in the UK and beyond, largely through the creation of a diverse range of concepts that are for sale at their website, including: Knowthing™ where a commissioner can have their ‘me-time’ delegated to a member of the collective and mymory™ where a client can have a memory recovered (or lost) on their behalf. these concepts or ‘solutions’ are the primary manifestation of the artwork; the theme that links all of the ideas together is that a client can have an experience either invented or lived out on their behalf by a member of the collective.

With are hosting a talk on thursday 3 november with professor christopher french, head of the anomalistic psychology research Unit at goldsmiths, University of london, about ‘false memory’, as part of a new collaborative body of research commissioned by the Wellcome trust.www.withyou.co.uk

robert Bermingham and richard robinson have worked together for the past six years. their practice plunders the worlds of advertising, comic book graphics, computer gaming and corporate culture to question the belief that as the world becomes more modern so it will become more reasonable and enlightened.

for their new series of work, they explore this misconception through the familiar visual language of the vintage film poster — but there is something unsettling about them — something at odds with their bright, bold cinematic message.

bermingham and robinson have meticulously removed the original illustrations, bringing the graphic boldness of their titles and sub-headings to the foreground: When WorlDs colliDe; the creatUre WalKs among Us; the Day the earth caUght fire and the fUtUre is cancelleD! by doing this, they create an ambiguity that is closely associated with current paranoia — both at home and abroad — as the posters appear to mimic a tabloid style in both their layout and message.

Biographyrobert bermingham (b.1971,brighton) and richard robinson (b.1972, orpington) have worked as solo artists and collaboratively since 2005. Paloma Varga Weisz’s sculptures and works on paper skirt the issues of history and influence, melting and mixing sources, periods and figments into an indistinct pool of images. in taming what she calls “the rapid pictures that arise in one’s head,” Varga Weisz tends to the metamorphosis of the images that move from mind to hand, from watercolour to wood, producing hybrids that recall at once history, folklore, contemporary media and works of art. as guido de Werd noted in his catalogue to her exhibition at the Kurhaus Kleve, the charmingly surreal figures that populate her work seem “like pictures belonging to an unknown fairytale”. in this manner, Varga Weisz sculpts an uncharted terrain, tracing the border of the familiar and the remarkable.

trained as a woodcarver, in her sculptures and drawings Varga Weisz creates timeless works that — by means of a fusion of influences from gothic madonnas to the teletubbies — encapsulate simultaneously states of adult knowingness and childhood innocence, personal reference and collective memory. the determination and tenacity with which she works is urgently felt throughout.

Marega Palser combines her training in dance and fine art to provide this performing exhibition of her work in collaboration with three of Wales’ finest movement artists. Catherine Bennett trained with rambert and worked with random and siobhan Davies; Belinda neave trained at the place and worked extensively with moving being and as a solo artist; and rosalind Brooks has toured with earthfall for the last three years and continues to teach with the company. the dancers and choreographer use their individual styles and experience to provide a subtle and intimate take on the art work and the exhibition space. How did you get started working at Chapter?I escaped from school at 16. Being keen on theatre, art and music I approached Chapter and started working under the YTS. My duties were mostly based in the publicity dept where I developed a keen interest in ‘Letraset’ and became pretty good at intricate, three-dimensional poster displays.

Favourite thing about working at Chapter?The wonderful people. No two days are the same.

Best memories at Chapter? Many over the years...from the danger of performing in a show ‘Over The Wall’, devised by Trevor Turton in the 80s to recently adorning a bee suit and opening the hive of the Chapter bees.

Favourite Chapter event? So much choice, however, the launch of my book of Poetry/Stories/Lyrics, Listen on my 40th birthday (It’s on sale in the shop!).

What do you get up to outside of Chapter? I seek and listen to beautiful music. I make music. I enjoy vegetarian cooking. I collect found objects. I love a good rummage in a charity shop. I like to read.

Tell us about your music I write songs, sing and play guitar with my group ‘Zeuk’. The music has been described as ‘smouldering gothic folk’. Some people are surprised when they hear me sing.

Do you have any other hidden talents? I would love to learn ventriloquism to give a voice to inanimate objects. I am working on this with my friend, Michael Lordofchaos.

Who would you like to play you in a film of your life? Peter Cushing and Hartley Hare...in the same film.

talk film: a celebration of europa cinemait’s been 20 years since the europa cinema network began between over 1,000 cinemas in 60 countries. the cardiff cinema experience has been enriched by the inclusion of chapter in their network. led by claire Vaughan, this course celebrates just a little of their influence by screening a selection of four films taking in themes of what it means to be european in a post-9/11 world. the films will be screened on sundays and the tuesday matinee, with a discussion on the tuesday night. Course fees are £45/£35 which includes a ticket to either screening. all films are, of course, open to the public at the usual ticket prices.

this autobiographical coming of age story by franco-iranian artist marjane satrapi was adapted elegantly from her graphic novel. a stark and beautifully designed animation, it’s as authentic and moving as it is funny. satrapi draws on her experiences during turbulent times in 1970s iran and her subsequent flight from a country that is becoming increasingly repressive. the film peppers a strikingly universal narrative of an imaginative little girl growing up with humour but without losing any of the seriousness of the task of trying to remain a free woman in iran.

When head on was released in 2004 it won plaudits across the world for its fearless exploration of the plight of immigrants in a modern society and its dynamic filmmaking and brave acting choices.

“two months after the nazis’ massacre of over 170 men in a czech mining village humphrey Jennings gained the co-operation of the south Wales miners’ federation and local pitmen to stage a bold re-enactment of the events in cwmgiedd, south Wales. suggesting that the slaying could have happened in any similar village, Welsh locals reveal their actual names when forced by occupying nazis to register at the village hall. there’s a civilised reticence about Jennings’ treatment and skillful montage builds tension isolating objects and telling details. there are no glib, articulate spokesmen here and Jennings, using light and shadow well, suggests a stunned community awaiting the decisive blow. the scene where the miners defiantly sing land of my fathers at the climax can be expected to release audience emotions hitherto restrained by Jennings’ commendable rigour and sensitivity” an edited extract from an article by Welsh film historian dave Berry.

Chapter is situated in Canton, behind Cowbridge Road East, between Llandaff Road and Market Road. We are easily accessible from the city centre. Overflow car parking is available after 6pm at Cardiff Community Learning Services adjacent to the car park at Chapter. Alternative nearby car parks are shown above. Number 17, 18 and 33 buses leave every five minutes from the City Centre.
