Miklos Peller: Organist ( volunteer) since 1979, making this year his 25th anniversary. He started as substitute organist and choir director in 1976. Although Mr. Peller’s main profession is struc-tural engineering, he started playing the piano at age 6 and has been playing the organ in various churches since the age of 10. Ildiko Ormai Buza: Substitute organist. She is a multi-talented musician, music instructor, and professional singer ( soprano). Among her many musi-cal accomplishments is her composition, an organ piece, “ Magyar Üdvözlégy” ( Hungarian Hail Mary) She re-ceived the papl blessing of Pope John Paul II for this original composition.

THE HOLY NAME SOCIETY The Holy Name Society binds its members to promote the observance of the Second Command-ment—to honor the name of God—by habits of speech and vigilance. The members are also obliged to attend society communions and meetings. The Holy Name Society was established in 1921 at the parish. The men of the Holy Name Society at St. Emeric’s serve the parish in ways that far exceed the requirements of their organizational structure. The parish steadily depends on the men for their help in the work preceding and following parish dinners and other events. They sponsor the spring dinner and generously contribute financially to parish projects. They also help support the building and renovation of churches in Hungary and Transylvania, and other charitable functions. They serve on various parish committees, and also represent the parish in outside circles as needed. A SZENT NÉV TÁRSULAT A Szent Név Társulat a második parancsolat jegyében fűzi egybe tagjait—Isten szent nevét hiába nem veszi, azt óvja és tiszteli. A Társulat tagjai rendszeres gyűléseket tartanak és közös szentáldozáshoz járulnak. 1921-ben alakult az egyházközségnél a Szent Név Társulat. A társulat tagjai az egyesületi előírásokat és szabályokat messze túlhaladva sokoldalúan nyújtják segítségüket az egyházközségnek. Az egyházközségi ebédek és egyéb társadalmi megmozdulások előkészítő és befejező feladatait mindig megbízhatóan látják el. A tavaszi ebéd az ő védnökségük alatt zajlik le. Ugyanakkor anyagilag bőkezűen támogatják a templomépületek javítását és fenntartását. Magyarországi és erdélyi templomoknak is nyújtanak anyagi segítséget, és más magyar ügyeket is támogatnak. Több egyházközségi tanácsnak tagjai, és templomunkat egyházközségünkön kívül is képviselik.

St. Emeric’s Altar Guild Oltár Egylet

Called the Young Ladies Sodality in 1932, the group later became known as the Junior Altar Society. Then, at a meeting on November 6, 1968, the members accepted a new constitu-tion, which had been written by the pastor and amended by the officers, to change the name to “Altar Guild” Society. In 1987 the Altar Rosary Society and the Blessed Virgin Society merged with the Altar Guild. The name then was changed to “Blessed Virgin, Holy Rosary and Altar Guild Society.” The objective of the society is to bring the women of the parish together socially and to help with all functions at the church. We have monthly meetings and receive Communion as a group the first Sunday of the month, and pray the Rosary at the wake of our deceased members. We have a Harvest Festival Dinner Dance every year. With the money we make, we help with expenses for repairs and renovations in the church and kitchen. We bought a beauti-ful hand-made altar cloth from Hungary, and also contributed to charitable causes at home and in Hungary and Transylvania. Our members work hard for our parish, even though most of them are senior citizens. They are a wonderful group of ladies, who are willing to do anything to keep our parish alive and moving ahead. They enjoy praying and working together . We eagerly welcome new members!

Az Egylet a Mária tisztelet, a lelkiélet, az imádság és jótékonyság komoly táplálója, szorgalmazója. Évente megrendezik tem-plomunkban a gyönyörű hagyományos Mária koronázást. A havi első szombati imagyakor-latok, valamint az évi lelkigyakorlatok szor-galmazói és résztvevői. Az Úrnapi körme-neteinken egy kinti oltár díszítését is vállal-ják. 1987, szeptember 24-én Fatima püspöke, Bishop Alberto Cosmo do Amural, látogatott meg bennünket, majd 1989 június 20-án is-mét, Kondor Lajos Atya kiséretében. A Fatima család, mint közösség, évente el-zarándokol a környékbeli Szűz Máriát tisztelő kegyhelyekre: Our Lady of ourdes Shrine, a Máriapochi kegyhelyre, és a Sorrowful Mother Shrine kegyhelyre. The Group is especially committed to Marian devotions, fostering the spiritual life, prayer, and charitable deeds, as shown in their activities. Every yea they organize the traditional beautiful May Crowning in our

church, as well as the October remembrance at St. Elizabeth church commemorating the Blessed Virgin’s appearance at Fatima. They are dedicated to keeping the First Saturday devotions as a group– the Rosary, Mass and Holy Communion, and are also active participants, as a group, in the spiritual retreats of our parish. For our traditional outdoor Corpus Christi procession, they set up and decorate one of the five outdoor altars. They also organize clothing and food drives for the needy of the city. Most Rev. Alberto Cosme do Amural, Bishop of Fatima, honored the Parish with his visit and offered the sacrifice of the mass on September 24, 1987, and once again on June 20, 1989, together with Rev. Lajos Kondor. Every year the members, as a group, make a pilgrimage to each of the three nearby shrines, Our lady of Lourdes Shrine, The Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and to the Sorrowful Mother Shrine.

The St. Emeric Craft Club was founded in 1986. Its objectives were twofold: to provide a means of socializing for those ladies of the parish who enjoy embroidery and handicrafts, and second, to specifically beautify the interior of the church building where needed. The funds for the beautifying or renovation projects came from selling their craft products. Their greatest project, among many others, was the renovation in 1989 of the main social hall in the basement of the church building. The result was a beautiful modern, tastefully decorated, well lighted so-cial hall. The success of this project can be attributed to the leadership of Nelli Boros and Gizella Volgyi, and to the expert advice of architect, Stephen Gaspar. The ladies of the Craft Club meet not only once a week for their craft projects, but also organize numerous bake sales and help out at the dinners. The work of the Craft Club from its founding and for many years was under the leader-ship of Nelli Boros and Mária Földesi, continued now by Gizella Volgyi. Greetings! 2004 is a momentous year for St. Emeric Parish and the Hungarian Community of Cleveland. Since the founding of the Parish one hundred years ago, its members have served God, our community and our nation with pride and dedica-tion. St. Emeric Parish has always stood ready to guide gen-erations of Hungarians from newly arrived immigrants to proud citizens of our adopted land. In accordance with the Council of Vatican II and observ-ing the diocesan guidelines, there was a new Parish Pastoral Council formed and members elected in 1987 . The primary purpose of this council was to foster the spiritual growth of the parish. Past Presidents, Charles Murar and Janos Gereby, have worked diligently to assure continued growth of the parish. Today, with the help of our present pastor, Reverend Sandor Siklodi, St Emeric is thriving. Our liturgy is filled with Magyar music and song, under the direction of

our organist, Miklos Peller. Our celebrations at Christmas, Easter and holy days are highlighted with traditional customs and music. The church also provides home to the Hungarian School and the Hungarian Scouts. We administer to our ever growing elderly parishioners as well as the Hungarian community of Cleveland. Our many dinners are well known, thanks to the dedi-cated work of our "kitchen angels". We have monthly coffee gatherings after Mass and an an-nual Holiday Bazaar. Our church organizations provide opportunities for service in many fields. The expressions of our faith is built on a thousand years of Christian Magyar traditions. In our next one hundred years as a Magyar parish, we plan to expand with continued dedication, guided by Our Heavenly Father, the work started in 1904. “Chief Cook” was Father Karpi’s designa-tion for the person who orchestrates the ac-tivities of the kitchen at St. Emeric Church. I, Edith Juhasz, have this honor as our parish embarks on her second century. We are a generational church; this is dem-onstrated by the fact that I stepped into the chief cook role after my mother, Elizabeth Simon, retired from her twenty some year la-bor of love in this capacity. In the one hun-dred year history of our parish, Elizabeth was preceded by many a dedicated and capable chief cook. While a work assignment took me to Germany for a few years, Mary Nemeth, with the help of the Megymiroris, John and Marika, took over. My moms' predecessors were: Leszko Julika, Mary Tricsko, Mary Preg and Rose Molnar. The Megyimoris also

originated and continue the tradition of the venison dinner which now is an eagerly awaited annual gourmet feast. The gastro-nomic traditions of our proud Hungarian heri-tage are kept alive with the devoted support of innumerable talented volunteers. Our numerous and renowned harvest festi-vals, dinners, lunches, breakfasts and bake sales are the fruits of countless hours of self-less work of many “kitchen angels”. It is a privilege to play a role in preserving our culi-nary traditions and to hopefully, pass the torch to future generations. It is my fervent prayer that God will steadfastly smile upon us and that the St. Emeric “kitchen angels” of the past will continue to guide our hands throughout the next century. Edith Juhasz

MAGYAR ISKOLA A SZENT IMRE EGYHÁZKÖZSÉGNÉL

Angol nyelvű, hivatalos, általános iskolai tanítás A Szent Imre Egyházközség 1904-ben történt megalakulása után Soltész István plébános a plébánia épületében beindította az iskolát 2 osztállyal, ahol angol nyelvű hivatalos oktatás folyt. 1915-ben a templom és az iskola leégett. Az újonnan vásárolt templom plébániájában 4 osz-tályban működött az iskola. Az Egyházközség növekedése és a város terjeszkedése miatt 1924-ben Hartel József plé-bános irányításával új iskola épült. Itt 8 osztályban az orsolya nővérek tanítottak, majd 1929-ben az Isten Megváltó Leányai ( Daughters of the Divine Redeemer) nővérek vették át a tanítást.1937-ben Magyarországról Shvoy Lajos püspök meglátogatta az iskolát. 1962-ben az egyháztagok külváro-sokba költözése miatt megszűnt a tanítás. Angol nyelvű tanítás Mundweil János plébános kezdeményezésére 1962-tõl az iskola 3 termében 15- 25 fogyatékost tanítottak és foglalkoztatottak a St. Joseph rend apácái, majd a Jubás házaspár. 1988-ban ezt az iskolát más helyre vitték, igy a tantermek üresen maradtak. De nem sokáig!.. Magyar nyelvű, hetenkénti iskolai tanítás 1988-ban Siklódi Sándor plébános otthont adott a Lakewood-i iskolákban hétfő esténként működő Clevelandi Magyar Iskolának. Ettől kezdve a Szent Imre Egyházközség és a Magyar Iskola együttesen szolgálta és szolgálja a magyar emigrációs fiatalok oktatását. A Clevelandi Magyar Iskola Az ötvenes évek elején Clevelandbe érkeztek a háború utáni menekült táborokból kivándor-lók. Ezek magukkal hozták az akkori magyar hazafias korszellemet. Megérkezve, magyar kul-turközösségekbe tömörülve éltek. Az idő múlásával szükségessé vált a táborokból jött fiatalok mag-yar tudásának a fejlesztése és az emigrációban született gyerekek részére az alapvető magyar tanítása és általában a magyarságtudat fejlesztése. Ezért dr. Papp Gábor 1958-ban beindította a clevelandi Magyar Iskolát, amelynek 1985-ig volt az iskola igazgatója, amikor átadta az iskola vezetését Bogárdy Imrének. 1988-tól Szentkirályi Ödön az igazgató. A Magyar Iskola egy magánházban kezdte a működését 36 tanulóval. Az egyre növekvő létszám szükségessé tette, hogy különböző nyilvános és katolikus iskolákban legyen, majd 1988-tól a Szent Imre egyház és a Cserkészház tantermeiben működik. Az elmúlt évtizedek alatt kialakult a tanrend, ami az ÁBC tanításával kezdődik és a magyar irodalom magasszintű tanításával végződik. Az alsó hét osztályban a gyermekek az írás, olvasás alapvető fogalmait sajátítják el. Nyelvtan, versek, történelem és a magyar kultúrához tartozó játékok és énekek egészítik ki a tananyagot. A magasabb osztályokban a helyes fogalmazást, kifeje-zokészséget, valamint a magyar földrajzot, néprajzot, történelmet és irodalmat tanítjuk. A Magyar Iskola az Isten, Haza és emberszeretet jegyében működik. A tananyag céltu-datosan osztályonként emelkedõ. Az anyag tanításához megfelelő tankönyvek állnak rendelkezésre. Az iskola részére szükséges tankönyvek egy részét ez az iskola vagy más clevelandi emigrációs szervezetek adták ki. A tanítók önként, ellenszolgáltatás nélkül végzik munkájukat. Nappal mérnökök, tanárok, ápolónők, háziasszonyok, de hétfő esténként lelkesen és felkészülten tanítanak és szolgálják az emi-

grációs magyar kultúrát. Az elmúlt évtizedekben mélyreható társadalmi, politikai és erkölcsi változások történtek úgy Magyarországon, mint az Egyesült Államokban: -idegen ajkú házastárs és szülő, egyszülős családok, -a környezet idegen nyelvű nyomása, -a hitélet és erkölcsi színvonal csökkenése, -a 90-es években Magyarország demokratizálódása. A Magyar Iskola a felsorolt változásokhoz, illetve jelenségekhez alkalmazkodva így fogalmazza meg hivatását: A Magyar Iskola jelenlegi hivatása a XXI. században -magyarságismeret tanítása, -magyarságtudat átadása, -a környezet erkölcsromboló hatásának ellensúlyozása, -magyar keresztény és hazafias szellem megőrzése és továbbadása, -a hittan és keresztény erkölcs tanítása,

-megtanítja a tanulóknak, hogy szüleik vagy nagyszüleik hogyan és miért kerültek emigrációba.

-a tanulóinak olyan embereket állít példaképül, akik a keresztény és magyar nemzeti eszme megvalósításáért vagy védelméért munkálkodtak vagy életüket áldozták.

-minden érdeklődő emigrációs, kárpátmedencei és magyarországi egyénnek, iskolának, tankönyvszerkesztőnek rendelkezésére áll, tankönyveit,

kiadványait szívesen és örömmel átadja, -látogatókat, érdeklődőket szívesen fogad. Hálás vagyok a Szent Imre Egyházközségnek és Siklódi Sándor plébánosnak, hogy a Magyar Iskolának otthont adott, ad és mindenben támogat minket. A magam és a Magyar Iskola tanítói nevében jelentem, hogy vállaljuk hivatásunkat, örömmel és büszkén végezzük munkánkat. Szentkirályi Ödön

Sok viszontagság után, végre 1969-ben végleges otthonra talált a 14.sz. Görgey Arthur cserkészcsapat az egyházközségnél, két akkori tanácstag, Skerlán Gyula és Fábry György segitségével. (Isten áldja öket haló poraikban!) A jóságos Kárpi Ferenc atya szeretettel fogadott bennünket, de sajnos ezekben a kezdeti időkben sok ellenszenvvel találkoztunk azok részéréröl akik nem ismerték a cserkészet célkitűzéseit, ilyenkor mindig Kárpi Atya vett védelmélbe bennünket. Természetesen, 100 fiatal fiú sem földreszállt angyal, úgy hogy sok megértő szeretetre volt szükségünk. Azóta is mondhatjuk, hogy a személyek változnak, de a problémák maradnak, és a megértő szeretetre mindig szükség van. A csapat is bekapcsolodott az egyházközség életébe, így ünnepélyes alkalmakkor, püspöki látogatások alkalmával, mindig kivonulunk, ilyenkor a regős csoport is megjelenik szép színes népviseletben. Több alkalommal mint például karácsonykor a regösök énekükkel is bekapcsolodnak a liturgiába. Az Úrnapi körmeneteken is résztvesznek a cserkészek és segédkezenek a sátrak felállításában és lebontásában. Az egyházközség piknikjén is szerepelnek a

regösök táncszámokkal. A cserkész vezetők többen segítséget nyujtanak a konyhán a főzésnél, az ebédeken a belépőjegy árusitásnál, vagy a liturgiában teljesitenek szolgálatot. Kárpi Atya (Isten nyugosztalja), nyugdíjba vonulása után Orley Richard Atya (Isten nyugosztalja őt is) majd Siklodi Sándor Atya vendégszeretetét élvezik a cserkészek. Sándor Atya érdeme, hogy 14 évvel ezelött, a cserkészet megkapott 20 évi használatra a templom területén lévő régi elhanyagolt raktár épületet, amelyből egy gyönyörű cserkészotthont varázsoltak a cserkészek, egy pár szülő segitségével, amelyhez az anyag nagy részét a Graber Metal Works adományozta. Ugyancsak néhány évvel ezelött Sándor Atya helyet adott a 34.sz. Zrinyi Ilona leány cserkészcsapatnak is az egyházközségnél. Igy hosszú idő után a két csapat egy fedél alatt gyűlhet, segítséget nyújtva a szülőknek, hogy nem kell nekik kétfelé menni a gyerekekért. A cserkészet hálás szeretettel van az egyházközség iránt és kéri a Jó Isten további áldását a 100 éves jubileum alkalmából.

After many vicissitudes, finally in 1969 our scout troop, the 14. Gorgey Arthur troop, found a home at St. Emeric Parish with the as-sistance of two councilmen, Gyula Skerlan and Gyorgy Fabry. (God bless their souls.) The pas-tor, the good hearted Father Karpi accepted us very kindly. Unfortunately not every one was pleased with the scouts moving into the build-ing, in particular those members who were not familiar with the scouting work, but the good Father always stood up for us and wholeheart-edly supported us. Of course, one hundred ac-tive boys are not without their mischief, no matter how well behaved or well disciplined they may be. One might say, some of the prob-lems with young boys remain, only the persons and circumstances change with the times, but dealing with them always takes a lot of loving understanding. Our scout troop became part of the life of the parish, so that on festive occasions, or when visiting dignitaries come, we always par-ticipate in both the liturgical and the social ac-tivities. When our folk ensemble group partici-pate in their colorful folk costumes, they are al-ways an eye catcher. The scouts also participate and help in the Corpus Christi procession. The folk ensemble performs at our parish picnic and harvest festivals with their beautiful dances, and with their singing at the Christmas concert and other sacred concerts. Moreover, some of the adult leaders volunteer by providing help in the

kitchen for the dinners, assisting in the ticket sales, and also by serving in the liturgy in vari-ous capacities during Mass.

After the retirement of Father Karpi (God bless his soul), Father Richard Orley (God bless his soul) continued to give the scouts a home in the generous spirit of his predecessor and also administered to their spiritual needs. Today, Father Sandor Siklodi is the generous host. It is to the credit of Father Sandor that the scouts were able to obtain from the Diocese an old broken down building on the church's prop-erty that they could renovate and use for the next 20 years as their own. The older leaders, under the guidance and leadership of Stephen Graber jr., converted it into a beautiful scout center with office, classrooms, kitchen and dance hall for which much of the building mate-rial was donated by the Graber Metal Works. Also a few years ago Father Sandor granted meeting accommodations to the 34. Zrinyi Ilona Girl Scout troop. This is a tremendous help for the scouts, their parents, and the leaders because it allows the West side Hungarian Scouting to be all under one roof.

The scouts are grateful to St. Emeric Par-ish, its pastor and its parishioners for being able to make their home here, and ask for God's blessing on the 100th anniversary of this Parish..
