Are (ideas) and (feelings) that people send or receive when
they (communicate)
Two Types of Language (Verbal)
--A system of (spoken) and written words.
(Nonverbal)--Communication without (words).
Instead communication is by (body) language, appearance, and the sound of voice.
Understanding Verbal Language
Language is… A (System) : A group of elements
that work together. A (symbol) : Something that stands
for something else. (Conventional) : Accepted by a large
number of people. (Learned) : Learned through culture. (Changing) : which is good & not good.
Understanding Meaning Denotation: A word’s (dictionary)
meaning Example: Looking up the word “cat” in
the dictionary Connotation: A word’s (hidden)
meaning What it makes you (feel).
How you feel after hearing the words…rat, handsome, paragraph
Adapting Language (Standard American English)
Language that follows the rules and guidelines found in grammar.
Widely used and accepted
(Sublanguage) (Jargon) : Specialized vocabulary
understood by people in a particular group. (Slang) : Consists of recently coined
words or old words used new ways. (Dialect) : A regional or cultural
variety of language.
Understanding Nonverbal Language
Analyzing Body Language (Body Language) : The use of
facial expressions, (eye contact), gestures, posture, and (movement).

Paralanguage A type of nonverbal communication
that involves using voice variation and unconnected words and sounds to communicate. Four Types of (Paralanguage)

How Environment Affects Communication
You are affected by: (color), lighting, sound, and (space).
(Color): A white room vs. a bright orange room
Lighting: Fluorescent lighting vs. candles
(Sound): A fire alarm vs. soothing music
How Environment Affects Communication
(continued) (Space): small room vs. large
room (Intimate) space: distance of 18
inches between you and other people. (Personal) space: distance of 18
inches to four feet between you and other people.
Social space: distance of four to twelve feet between you and other people.
Public Space: distance of twelve feet and beyond you and other people.
