Nutrition

•  Study of food and how your body uses them

Malnutrition

•  When essential nutrients are missing from your body

•  You can be overweight and malnourished… It depends on what you are eating

Extreme Malnutrition

•  Kwashiorkor - Belly Swelling, caused by not enough protein

Marasmus

•  Growth is affected, caused by lack of nutrients.

Carbohydrates •  PROVIDES ENERGY in the form of

sugar and starches •  Glucose test = Benedicts test •  Starch test = Iodine turns color •  Breads, Grain, Rice, pasta

Proteins

•  Build and repair tissue, regulate chemical activity

•  Meat Fish Chicken, Eggs, Milk, Beans, Nuts

•  Biuret Test shows if a food is a protein

Fats •  Provide, energy, insulate, component of

brain tissue •  Butter, margarine, nuts oils, red meats •  Can use as an energy source when

there are no Carbohydrates in the body. •  Test is a piece of paper

Vitamins

•  Help carry out life functions like GROWTH AND REPRODUCTION

•  Vitamin A, B, C, D, E and K •  VITAMIN C cured scurvy

Rickets Lack of Vitamin D

•  You can get Vitamin D from the sun or milk is fortified with it.

•  Causes curving of the long bones

•  Common in the industrial revolution

Minerals

•  Help carry out life functions •  Calcium, sodium, iron, iodine and many

others

Goiters •  Lack of iodine in the system •  Now we Iodize salt •  Growth on the neck(thyroid)

Water

•  Used in every life function. •  Disposes Toxins, moves nutrients,

controls body temperature
