THE MARKOF CHAMPIONS:

DID YOU KNOW? After 40 years of growth, the onset of Prohibition in 1920 marked an unfortunate moment in the brewing business, but Anheuser-Busch, in the spirit of opportunity and optimism, rose to the challenge. In a CBS broadcast on the eve of Prohibition’s end, August Busch, Jr. declared: “Happy days are here again.”

He and Adolphus Busch III were working for the company at the time and were thrilled that the business was able to thrive again. In celebration, the brothers presented their father, August Busch, Sr., two mighty teams of Clydesdales, a now-historic gesture that remains embedded as a part of the Budweiser identity to this day.

The presentation of the original two six-horse hitches of champion Clydesdales moved father, sons and drivers to tears; the phrase “crying in your beer” was officially coined shortly thereafter.

Stella Artois traces its brewing roots back to 1366. It was then the Den Hoorn brewery was first established in Leuven, Belgium. A world-renowned brewing institution, Den Hoorn laid the foundation for the quality, taste and standard Stella Artois is known for today. To honor it, the symbol of the Den Hoorn Brewery is proudly displayed in the cartouche.

Then in 1708, Sebastian Artois became the master brewer at Den Hoorn. And only nine years later, such was his commitment; he was able to buy the brewery, putting his last name on it and eventually on every bottle of Stella Artois around the world.

Because The Artois Brewery was so beloved internationally and locally, a special batch was brewed as a Christmas gift for our loyal patrons. That special batch was the first to officially include “Stella” in its name. “Stella”, meaning star in Latin, pays homage to this original occasion, accompanied by a star on every bottle.
