    Chamber Orchestra –  Vocabulary Review

    Objectives:

      Students will define selected vocabulary terms from or related to their repertoire.

      Students will demonstrate understanding of the vocabulary terms from/related to their

    repertoire by realizing them in their playing.

    Standards:

      DMPS Orchestra Topics (SRG)

    In addition to Phase 1, students take notes in their music and respond to marksappropriately. Student demonstrates the ability to focus through rehearsals and

     performances. Student is able to demonstrate their independent part in an ensemble.(Engagement, Level 3 Phase II)

    o  In addition to previous phases students understand and demonstrate tenuto, trills,

    sforzando, fortepiano, and tremolo using proper bow placement. Students demonstratestyles of legato and marcato. (Articulation, Level 3 Phase III)

       NCAS-MPEo  MU:Pr4.2.E.Ia Demonstrate, using music reading skills where appropriate, how

    compositional devices employed and theoretical and structural aspects of musical works

    impact and inform prepared or improvised performances.

    Procedures:

      Tune

      Warm Upo  one octave D major scale in half notes, quarters, eighths

      Sight read Cobbler’s Reel o  this is a standard reel that old string bands would have played when they were jamming

    together

    o  discuss similarities and differences between that and Red Lodge Reel

      Vocabulary review activity

    o  Board is divided into “what I play (noun)” and “how I play (adjective)”, and “other” 

    sections, with room for one outlier. Terms and definitions are posted in a word bank,students have to match the terms and definitions, then categorize them appropriately.

    o  Match the term to the definition, and then put them both in the appropriate side of the

     board.  Pre-selected students will be the participants

    o  Definition of pesante, play D major scale in quarter notes in a pesante style

    o  Definition of largamente, play D major scale in eighth notes while broadening

    o  Definition of ostinato, play D major scale in half notes while certain sections play D

    eighth notes

      Legendo  mm. 16 –  22, focus on the ostinato in the violin II and the melody in the cello

      Remember these are the two main structures we have in this music

    mm. 46 –  47, rehearse sounding largamente  show resistance in conducting  feel resistance in your bow

      use more weight, less speed

     

    stretching that rubber bando  mm. 50 –  end, pesante, cellos and basses

      violins, don’t rush them

    Exit Slipo  each section gets an exit slip with a term, which they have to define and locate in their

    music, if applicable
