Coburn Music Coburn Music an adventurous and innovative early music concert series that aims to bring the Truckee-Tahoe basin to the forefront of the classical music scene. Founded by Truckee High School graduate, Lindsay McIntosh (née Hollingshead), Coburn Music will launch its inaugural season this summer with six pop up concerts peppered throughout the historic Downtown Truckee.

McIntosh, who has been praised by The New York Times for her “thoughtfully conceived” programming will bring New Vintage Baroque to the Truckee basin for a week-long music series this August. The

program promises to enrich and engage the Truckee community with fun for audiences of all ages. This music series is committed to bringing the highest level of historically informed early music to this beautiful region.

Truckee.com: We continue to see record-breaking traffic on Truckee.com. For shoulder season Q4 (April, May, June) we achieved 79K sessions up from 49K in Q3 (Jan., Feb., March).

Visit Truckee E-Newsletter: Signups are running at 50+ per day. The Enter-To-Win Truckee vacation has been very successful. The Visit California email (screenshot shown to right) went out to 100K+ subscribers across America. We now have 7,525 high quality opt-ins for Visit Truckee. Email is still the #1 preferred channel for a decision/transaction. We will launch a winter contest in fall.

Truckee Brand: The Truckee Base Camp for a Big Life brand will be front and center at Truckee Thursdays with a newly created booth showcasing all of the new brochures, the event rack card and staffed with TTBID event grant recipients. Dates are July 20 and 27. We will be releasing the new Truckee Base Camp for a Big Life BigTruck hats as well.

Social Media: We have broken the million impression barrier at 2.3 million for posts about Truckee in Q4. We also reached 2.2 million people. For comparison, last summer in Q1 we achieved 248K impressions.

Public Relations/Editorial Outreach: The Time Inc, Visit California Editor and Social Media manager had a solid ‘three hour tour’ of Truckee, compressing a 24 hour itinerary into 1/2 a day due to weather. We are excited about expecting to see Truckee in the annual state visitor magazine. We oriented them to the Truckee Wine and Brews Trail, the California Cultural District semi-finalist designation and the Truckee Brand.

How long have you been conducting business in Truckee? Almost 7 years. I purchased this business in September of 2010.

Who are your clientele? Anyone with a dog or a cat could be a customer of ours. Our customer base is split about 50/50 with half being locals that use us for boarding their pets when they’re traveling for business and vacations. Local clients also use our doggie daycare when they’re working and don’t want to leave their dog home alone or when they just want their dog to get some supervised playtime and socialization. The other half of our business is made up of visitors to the area primarily from Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area as well as Reno. Many of these people enjoy having their dogs here with them and have accommodations that don’t allow dogs. Though their dogs aren’t staying at their hotels or rental units with them, we allow them to check the dogs out for the day to go on hikes or trips to the lake. We also have many clients that prefer our service and find it more convenient than boarding their pets at a facility back home.

What has been your most rewarding project? Several years back we introduced a sales promotion that gives new clients half off the boarding price for their first visit. As part of the deal, we ask for a $10 donation to a great local organization, The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. This promotion has generated many thousands of dollars for HSTT and we’re very happy to be helping them with the wonderful work they do for our community.

What has been the greatest challenge overall to your business? The seasonal nature of our primarily tourism-based local economy is my most consistent issue. The shoulder seasons have been quite a challenge. Fortunately, we have a good and growing group of loyal local customers for which we’re very grateful. They’re a great benefit to us throughout the year and especially when we’re in between tourist seasons.

What has been the most beneficial for your business? Our clients really care about their pets and trust us to care about them as much as they do. Staffing can be a challenge here in Truckee and it helps a great deal that many of the key members of our staff have been with us for so long. When pet owners drop off their dogs and cats they’re leaving them with people they’ve known and trusted for, in some cases, years.

What are your business goals? It probably comes as no surprise that profitable growth is my primary goal. After a challenging first few years, the business has been growing consistently. I’d like to continue that by increasing our business with customers in our local community as well as with the visiting pet owners that could use our services. We’re always working on attracting new clients but I think that the main source of our long-term growth is having these new clients love the care and attention we pay to their pets and having them return to see us year after year.

Any tips or pointers for other small business owners in the region interested in continued success like yours? For a business like this, I can’t overstate the importance of a good website and social media presence. The website is responsible for a great deal of our new business and the details involved in staying current with “search engine optimization” and web marketing are very complicated. Money spent on this has been a good investment for us.

Other than that, I don’t know if I have any special insights beyond the obvious - happy customers (including the four-legged ones) are really important!

Truckee a Finalist for New California Cultural District Designation

The California Arts Council launched a new program designating 10-15 Cultural Districts throughout the state. This program aims to leverage the state’s considerable assets in the areas of culture, creativity, and diversity. A cultural district is generally understood as a well-defined geographic area with a high concentration of cultural resources, arts and culture activities.

Working collaboratively with the Town of Truckee, Truckee Public Arts Commission, Truckee Arts Alliance and Nevada County Arts Council, the Chamber created a valuable inventory of cultural assets that can be found at Truckee.com/cultural-assets, as well as on the domain TruckeeCulturalDistrict.com.

“More cities are turning to art and Cultural Districts to foster economic growth, increase tourism and attract the creative workforce needed for the new economy,” stated Sierra Food, Wine, Art in their recent issue.

Inspired by natural beauty and mountain scenery, Truckee is home to a creative culture that is rugged, vibrant, innovative and resourceful. Within Truckee's cultural district, one discovers theater, dance, studios, art and photography galleries, exhibits and public art, a Makerspace, and a new state-of-the-art museum including history about the Donner Party and much more.

The California Arts Council outlines their values and actions they will take as:

We encourage the cultivation of a broad array of authentic and sustainable cultural districts that reflect the breadth and diversity of California’s extensive cultural assets

We support the retention of homegrown assets and actively work to mitigate

displacement for groups such as artists, low-income residents, and arts organizations

We support the utilization of the arts as a tool for preservation in order to fortify and protect local socio-economic diversity, cultural diversity, and ethnic diversity

We seek to identify, support and connect centers of arts and cultural activity throughout the state through the certification process

This extensive process has been extremely beneficial not only for the inventory of assets creation on Truckee.com, but it has also strengthened the collaborative spirit and relationships within Truckee’s cultural community as well. This initiative is in alignment with the Chamber, Town, and Truckee Tomorrow’s focus on economic development in that the presence of the arts in a community contributes to the quality of life for residents, second homeowners and visitors.

It is anticipated that the designations will be made by mid July.

GOOD MORNING TRUCKEE August 8, 2017 Good Morning Truckee to Focus on Emerging Trends in Real Estate

Real estate prices, inventories, short and long term rentals, workforce housing, second homeowners – all have significant impacts on the Truckee-Tahoe economy and community. Who are today’s buyers? Where are they coming from? What are they looking for? What impacts do a tight inventory have? What kind of impact to real estate sales did the heavy winter have?

The August 8th Good Morning Truckee will bring in experts in their field to break down the facts and figures and tell us what the current trends really mean.

Sam Drury, President of the Tahoe Sierra Board of Realtors will provide a broad

overview of the 2017 trends in real estate. Joining him will be Jim Winterberger of Tahoe Getaways speaking from the property management / rentals segment. Katie Rice of Guild Mortgage Company, The Rice Team will speak to financing, specifically first time homebuyers.

Good Morning Truckee offers online registration at Truckee.com under What’s Happening. You can also purchase multi-packs of tickets for your convenience. And, as always, you can still purchase your ticket at the door with cash, credit card or check.

Good Morning Truckee is open to the public – everyone is invited. It is held the second Tuesday of every month at Truckee Tahoe Airport from 7:00-8:30am. Ticket price for general public is $12; Truckee Chamber members $10 and includes a hot breakfast and raffle ticket.

Good Morning Truckee is “going green”! The Town of Truckee has provided the

event with reusable plates, cups, bowls and utensils. They are BPA free and washed and returned each month. Additionally, anyone who brings their own traveler coffee mug will receive an additional raffle ticket and chance to win great prizes.

Truckee Tomorrow is a collaborative economic development initiative led by the Truckee Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Town of Truckee and public/private partners dedicated to the well-being and vibrancy of Truckee for generations to come.

Originating in 2010 on the heels of the recession, Truckee Tomorrow held four facilitated community meetings to begin the dialogue of working together as a region to identify economic opportunities, challenges, and projects.

In 2013, the group of civic and community leaders were brought back together to discuss economic development strategies to pursue. The group consensus was to pursue the creation of a Truckee brand and implementation of a place-based marketing effort that would create a centralized website providing live, work and play information.

Upon securing funding, the Truckee Brand Identity project began along with the creation of the new Truckee.com website focusing on economic, community, and visitation. This Truckee Tomorrow Phase I project was launched in 2015 and completed in 2016.

Truckee Tomorrow Phase II is now poised to begin. With the Brand as the platform, this next phase will focus on “The Trilogy of Economic Development Initiatives” including:

Business Speaks! – The creation of business communication areas to deepen our communication with the entire Truckee business community. Through this grassroots process, we will bring together vested business owners and their representatives for results-driven communication that identifies challenges and collaborative approaches toward solutions to business issues.

Quality of Life Survey – Decreasing loyalty trends cause flight to competing towns and cities, in addition to painting a negative reputation with prospective residents and business owners. We will measure and track community sentiment about living in Truckee providing invaluable information to assist in understanding trends in our community’s feelings about the quality of life in Truckee.

Socioeconomic Indicators – There is a lack of a central repository of key socio economic indicators. Working collaboratively with the Town of Truckee, community and stakeholders we will identify, measure, and track key socioeconomic indicators that have a direct correlation with Truckee brand loyalty and economic strength.

The Truckee Chamber of Commerce has been a community pillar for over 100 years. The community has depended on the Chamber to be a catalyst for change, convener for business, and champion for a stronger business community. The health of our business community and the health of the larger community in which it lives are inextricable. Providing what business needs to succeed is central to the success of the community as a whole.

The North Lake Tahoe-Truckee Leadership Program has completed its 14th year with a graduation celebration held in May at the North Tahoe Event Center. The program creates an opportunity for potential leaders to broaden their understanding of the region and its issues, challenges and opportunities, while honing and developing their leadership skills. Since 2004, the program has graduated 297 individuals.

As part of the five month program, participants work on Action Plans designed to enhance some aspect of local community life. These Action Plans are intended to provide the framework to allow for real-world changes in the community. Through interviews, surveys, and research, teams developed a

program rationale, a needs assessment, proposed budget, timeline, community collaborations and promotional packet. The results of these projects were presented during the final day workshop. This year the projects were:

Sierra Business Council (SBC) recently announced the appointment of Kerri L. Timmer to Vice President, Climate and Energy and Kristin York to Vice President, Business Innovation and Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Director, joining Suzie Cordero in her role as Vice President, Finance and Operations.

Timmer and York replace Greg Jones who left SBC for a position in the public sector. As Vice President, Climate and Energy, Timmer will be responsible for overseeing and administering SBC's growing climate, energy and government affairs programs, as well as internal staff development. Sierra Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Partnership (CAMP) Program Director, Diana Madson will step into Timmer's former role of Government Affairs Director. As Vice President, Business Innovation and SBDC Director, York will oversee business development and access to capital programs through the SBDC, which offers no-cost consulting and training programs designed to help existing and new businesses thrive.

Is Your Company a Force for Good? Certified B Corps and the Future of our Economy By Heather Paulsen, MS, PMP

There are many ways to talk about using business as a force for good: Certified B Corps, benefit corporations, corporate social responsibility, conscious capitalism, social entrepreneurship and the triple bottom line, to name a few.

Each of these movements incorporates many best practices in the areas of leadership and impact, but only Certified B Corps measure what matters to achieve their social and environmental goals in measurable, lasting ways. (The “B” is for benefit, and “Corp” stands for corporation.)

Certified B Corps are for-profit companies that meet the highest standards for social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, and are outperforming their conventional peers in terms of employee engagement, community giving, environmental stewardship and profit.

It’s important to note that any type of for-profit entity can become a Certified B Corp, whether a sole proprietorship, LLC, LLP, cooperative or corporation.

Current research shows that consumers want not only to buy good products, they want to buy good products from good companies. B Corp certification is a rigorous third-party validation that companies “walk the talk” and take into account their impacts on all stakeholders, not just shareholders.

To become a Certified B Corp, a business must complete the free, confidential B Impact Assessment, created and managed by the nonprofit B Lab. The assessment “measures what matters” and generates a score reflecting a comprehensive evaluation of virtually every business practice and decision within a company. A minimum score of 80 out of 200 possible points—along with a document review process—earns B Corp certification.

I have worked with a wide range of clients to become Certified B Corps over the past three years (from sole proprietors to large companies with over $200million in revenues), and I have found three main reasons motivating them to certify as B Corps:

1. They have always been values-driven, and want to validate that their entire business meets rigorous standards;

2. They believe in legacy and want to build their values into the DNA of their company; and/or

3. They strive to improve, always—measuring the metrics that matter reveals new ways to level up and amplify their positive impacts.

When talking about Certified B Corps, people often think I am talking about benefit corporations. While the language is

confusingly similar, they are different things. Certified B Corps meet rigorous standards and are certified by B Lab as described above. Benefit corporations are companies that have amended their articles of incorporation to consider their impacts on all stakeholders and to commit to creating a positive impact in the world.

The beauty is in their complementarity: benefit corporations are required to have third-party validation of their benefit to society, and B Corp Certification fulfills that requirement. Vice versa: Certified B Corps are required to amend their articles of incorporation (or bylaws or operating agreement) to become a benefit corporation (or benefit LLC, etc.) within two years of certification, if their state has the applicable legal option available.

Certified B Corps and benefit corporations offer, in my view, the most comprehensive and meaningful way for a company to express its commitment to business as a force for good.

“Collection Pilot” in the North Tahoe/Truckee region and Reno/Sparks communities.

Their program works like this: local residents save their empty 12 oz. brown long neck craft beer bottles in boxes, then drop-off at one of the collection locations or events. They send the bottles to a craft brewer who cleans and refills the bottles with craft beer. They call this ‘Purpose Driven Reuse’. Their goal is to create an infrastructure to collect and preserve bottles for reuse and eventually start up regional bottle washing facilities.

The Mountain Housing Council held its first partner meeting in June. The Council brings together a wide range of committed stakeholders to take on the unique and pressing challenges of housing in the North Tahoe-Truckee region: availability, variety and affordability. The goal is to build on what was learned in the 2016 Regional Housing Study, to accelerate solutions to the region’s housing problems, and to bring together government agencies, developers, land owners, nonprofit organizations, businesses, potential funders and the people of the region to implement those solutions.

Truckee alone has a population of roughly 16,000. The Truckee-North Lake Tahoe Region is closer to 30,000 people combined. On big weekends, those numbers swell to around 100,000.

For those people, there are 33,300 housing units – mostly single family homes built before 1979 – and 65 percent of them are vacant more than half the year.

Of those who are living here full time, 67 percent are paying more than 30 percent of their income (considered overpaying), while 26 percent are paying more than half their income for housing. Within the 474 below market rate units in the area, zero are available, with waits of 6 months to 2 years.

All those numbers add up to teachers who can’t afford to live here, employers unable to staff their businesses, and would-be community members that contribute to our economy, our culture and our vitality – moving away.

Tahoe Donner Association Named Firewise Community® of the Year

Tahoe Donner Association was recently named Firewise Community® of the Year by the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County. The recognition was awarded to those who have dedicated their time and energy to help make their

communities safer from wildfire. The Tahoe Donner Forestry Department

is dedicated to maintaining the health of the forest within the association’s 7,300-plus acres while minimizing the threat of forest fires. Forester Bill Houdyschell and his team are nationally regarded as leaders in their field. The department manages 477 acres of reforestation and fuel breaks, 618 acres of fuel reduction zones, and 1,344 acres of common area maintaining two thirds for fuel reduction.

With more than 150 fires near Tahoe Donner in the past 40 years, fire safety is a

top concern. Tahoe Donner’s Forestry department has implemented forest health education and defensible space inspections on all properties since the South Lake Tahoe Angora Fire in 2007. They continue to provide educational outreach and physical vegetation management services to enable homeowners to achieve and maintain a Firewise condition around their homes.

“A forest is not a static environment,” explains Houdyschell. “We can look at your property and its trees and see what will happen to those trees in 10 to 20 years.”

To help offset costs of fire safety programs, Houdyschell has secured more than $700,000 in federal and state grants since 1990, helping fund management efforts of Tahoe Donner’s forested common areas for community protection and forest health.
