PRINCIPALS MESSAGE

We have now entered the liturgical season of Advent. It is a new year for the Church. You will notice that our front foyer, main office and library have been beautifully decorated. This is a very busy time of year as we prepare for the coming of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Canadian Martyrs School will be a hub of activity as there are a number of events and activities planned.

On Friday, December 4th, 2015, we will celebrate Joy Day. Our students and staff involve themselves in classroom activities to spread JOY throughout the school. Students will be decorating classroom doors in the morning, and completing crafts in the afternoon. Also, classes are preparing for our Christmas play “The Star”. There will be 2 casts for the play, 1 cast starring our JK-Gr. 3 students and another cast starring our Gr. 4-8 students. The Primary play will be performed on Tuesday, December 15 at 10:00 a.m. and Wednesday, December 16 at 1:30. The Junior/ Intermediate play will be performed on December 15 at 1:30 and December 16 at 10:00. Due to Fire Regulations we will need to issue tickets to avoid overcrowding. More information will be coming home shortly on how you can reserve your tickets. We will also be celebrating an Advent Mass on Friday, December 4th at 1:15 pm, in the school gym. All are welcome to join us. We hope that parents will be able to join us for both the Advent Mass and Christmas play!

We are really looking forward to this year’s edition of the St. Nick’s Workshop on Friday, December 11th. A dedicated and hard-working group of parents have been crafting, planning and organizing this event since last year. The items available for sale are very impressive and the students should have a wonderful time making purchases for their families. As you are aware, all funds that are raised at the St. Nick’s Workshop will be used to support families and charities in our community for the Christmas season.

Now that the winter weather will soon be upon us, we ask that your child come to school with boots and a pair of indoor

shoes. We want to try to keep the school as clean as possible and this is much easier when the children have a pair of indoor shoes to change into when they come in from outdoor recess.

Please note that the students will be dismissed early on Friday, December 18th prior to the Christmas vacation. Students will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m.

Classes resume on Monday, January 4th, 2016.

As always, I will keep you and your children in my prayers. At this time, I would like to wish you a very restful, safe, happy and holy Christmas season.

Congratulations to all of our lucky winners and another huge thank you for all your support!

United Way

A Big Thank You From the United Way!!

The United Way would like to thank all the families who contributed to the 2015 United Way Campaign. What a great success! Your donations help to serve the most vulnerable in our Halton community. Because of your generosity, children are fed, youth receive the support they need, and the seniors in our community benefit from medical equipment and transportation assistance. The Canadian Martyrs community continues to be a true blessing to those in need.

ECO Club News

Our school community is committed to being good stewards of the treasures which God has provided for us. At Canadian Martyrs, the students, staff, School Council and parent volunteers are very active in promoting lifestyle choices which have a positive impact on our environment. Some of the areas which we focus our activities on are the 3 R’s, energy conservation, clean air and water, as well as clean and green living spaces.

Students are reminded to place paper and empty drink containers in the appropriate recycling bins in their classrooms. Also, please remember to turn computer monitors to the OFF position when not in use.

Remember… every THURSDAY at Canadian Martyrs is “Litterless Lunch and Snack Day”. Classes will compete for the Litterless lunch Trophy and the class with the least amount of litter for the month will win bragging rights and will hold the trophy for the month following.

Here are some tips to remember:

Send snacks, meals & drinks in reusable containers

Use cloth napkins instead of paper ones

Page 4: CHALK TALK - Halton Catholic District School Boardschools.hcdsb.org/cdnm/Newsletters/Chalk Talk... · 2015-12-18 · Chalk Talk – December 2015 / January 2016 Page 2 of 11 The parish

Chalk Talk – December 2015 / January 2016 Page 4 of 11

Send reusable forks and spoons instead of plastic ones

Thank you to all the families who have donated their empty toilet paper rolls, dryer lint (yes, I said dryer lint) and used K-cups. The up-cycling team is hard at work turning these items into treasures to be sold at St. Nick's workshop.

A Friendly Reminder About Idling

Did you know Burlington has an anti-idling by-law that limits unnecessary idling to 60 seconds?

Parents, if you drive your children to and from school, please turn your engines off while waiting at school. Did you know that…

Air pollution increases around the school in the afternoon when there are lots of children running around.

Children are more affected by air pollution than adults because of their smaller size, their premature lungs and their desire to spend time playing outdoors.

The exposure to idling fumes is actually greater inside a vehicle than outside a vehicle.

Idling can harm your engine because it is not able to run at peak efficiency while idling.

When you are waiting at the school for your children, please TURN OFF YOUR ENGINE.

2016-17 JK/SK Registration

Early registration for new children attending Junior or Senior Kindergarten next year will be held at all elementary schools on January 26 and 27th, 9:00 am to noon, 1:30 pm to 5 pm.

Junior Kindergarten: children are required to be 4 years of age on or before December 31, 2016.

Senior Kindergarten: children are required to be 5 years of age on or before December 31, 2016.

Roman or Eastern Rite Catholic Baptismal certificate is required to be shown.

Proof of age is required.

Before registration is finalized, a child will have completed the prescribed program of immunization for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps and rubella.

Families registering for the first time at a school are required to provide the child’s Record of Immunization card at the time of registration.

*Please note: If you are already registered in an elementary school for either JK or SK, you do not need to re-register.

Parent Notification of Late Buses

School staff and parents can subscribe to receive an email notifying them when buses are delayed. Any time there is a late bus, the bus operators are responsible for posting the late bus information on the HSTS website. Once the

information is posted, the information can be obtained using the following options:

Go to the HSTS website at www.haltonbus.ca and click on the Delays and Cancellations link on the left hand side of the main page. This will take the user to a page which displays which routes are currently delayed and the length of the delay.

Go to the HSTS website and sign up to receive an email which automatically notifies the subscriber when a bus is delayed and the length of the delay. Parents can sign up to receive late bus information for their child’s route only. Schools can also sign up to receive an email notifying them when any bus that services their school is delayed and the length of the delay.

Currently there are over 3,000 subscribers signed up for email notification.

The Email Subscription module can be accessed on the HSTS website by clicking on Delays and Cancellations. Users subscribe to emails by supplying their email address and following the step by step instructions and indicating which routes they want to be notified about.

Additionally, parents can also subscribe when they retrieve their child’s bussing information from the HSTS website. Once they login and enter their child’s OEN, address #, school and grade, their child’s bussing schedule is displayed on the page and parents have the option to subscribe from this page.

Welcome Volunteers

Please feel free to stop into the Staff Room to enjoy a glass of cool filtered water during your next visit to the school.
