FAITHFULNESS A new school year has started… Rally Day has come and gone. Sunday School has begun… Confirmation and Wednesday Night Live are soon to follow. Ministry Teams are ramping up… and yet more people are needed… New programs and Educational opportunities are beginning to flourish… And new families are coming to worship.

It is a season of change and a time of time of opportunity… It is an exciting time in the life of Holy Communion.

But before we jump too far into the near future… I would like to take the opportunity to reflect and give thanks.

Heather Doidge and Andrea Godson have finished their service. They have helped to build some marvelous programs… They have provided leadership to this Church and hospitality to our immediate neighbors.

Laura Hermanns has returned from a year of mission in Rwanda… Anneka Barrow has recently left for Mexico to bless the people of San Miguel... And Pastor Jeff has just retired as the Bishop of The Greater Milwaukee Synod…

The number of lives that have – and will be – touched is unbelievable… From Racine to Milwaukee to all over the globe… From Sixth Street to Rwanda to Mexico and beyond…

The life of faith is about people and building relationships. But it is first and foremost about a relationship with God in Jesus Christ… The One who has called us beloved and sent us out… into the world.

A Calling is a sacred trust! It is an opportunity to begin something new… to renew our faith… To experience life in all of its abundance and with all of its possibility…

Please join me in giving thanks for all of these servants… I hope you are inspired as I am. Please join them… in the pursuit of discipleship… in following Jesus…

If you haven’t already done so… please look for a way to make a difference. Worship, Learn, Love and Serve… Join a Ministry Team, volunteer, write a note…

Be a blessing. Touch a life. Live the life of Faith…

2017 Summer Mission Trip to Niagara Falls, NY

June 18-23

All 6th-12th graders are invited to join us as we travel to Niagara Falls, NY, for our mission trip

next summer!

Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in North America, attracting millions of

tourists on both the Canadian and American side each year. The area surrounding the falls is popular

for recreation and all manner of adventures. However, at the same time, residents of Niagara Falls

struggle with economic problems, employment instability, and poverty. Tourists who come and stay

for just a few days will notice the beauty of the area, but may not see the struggle that lies behind it.

While we’re there we’ll have the opportunity to experience the full picture of life in Niagara Falls…both

the beauty and the brokenness that most tourists never get to see. We’ll serve through work projects

including soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and senior centers, and also volunteering with children’s

programs. In the evenings, we’ll have the opportunity to visit the Falls, enjoy ice cream from the local

favorite Twist of the Mist, visit local landmarks like Historic Fort Niagara or Fort Niagara State Park

and host a community cookout with Historic Holy Trinity.

So please consider joining us on what most certainly will be a grand adventure of service, fun, and

deepening our faith and love of God and God’s people!

A recap…

Who? All current 6th-12th graders. We have room for twenty youth and need a minimum

of ten to go.

What? Summer Mission Trip to Niagara Falls, NY, through YOUTHWORKS

When? June 18-23, 2017

Why? To have an absolutely AWESOME time serving God and God’s people!!!

How Much? The cost is $250 per person, which includes all meals, housing and travel. All

participants will be expected to join in our fundraising activities to help cover the

additional cost of this mission trip.

Please sign up in the church office and drop off your $50 nonrefundable deposit by Sunday,

October 9th. (The remaining $200 will be due in $50 increments through November – February

because the final payment to YOUTHWORKS is due February 15).

There have been several surprises for the food pantry this summer. In August the

Vacation Bible School youth at Mt. Pleasant Lutheran church had a baby shower for

the food pantry. We received a large supply of baby food, diapers, wipes and

formula.

Also in August, Christ Church United Methodist collected a large amount of

cleaning supplies, detergent and personal care items for our clients. These are frequently requested items which

we are not able to buy because of our limited budget. They are also items that cannot purchase with food stamps.

We continue to give out the birthday bags which were donated by Christ Church United Methodist. Each bag

contains a cake mix, disposable pan, frosting, candles, paper plates and napkins. Needless to say, the bags bring

smiles to many faces!

The Food Pantry will have another bake sale on Tuesday, November 8th at the Mt. Pleasant Town

Hall during voting hours. The bake sale held during the primary election voting raised $2500 and

we are hoping for an equal or even better result, but we will need help from many people, baking

and working at the bake sale, to make it a success! Please consider baking more than one item since

it will be a busy day and we would like to keep the tables full.

In the past we have found sweet breads (especially banana bread), pies, bars, brownies, cookies, Chex mix,

and trail mix have been excellent sellers, but any baked goods you can donate will be greatly appreciated! You

do not need to package the items or price them as we find many people prefer to purchase individual items or

sample just one of several types of treats. Baked goods can be dropped off at the church all day on Monday,

November 7th or before noon on Tuesday, November 8th at the church or at Mt. Pleasant Town Hall.

We also need volunteers to work the table, selling the baked goods. It would be ideal to have 3 volunteers

working at all times, and with the polls open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., that is going to take a lot of volunteers!

We hope people will be able to work a two and a half hour shift, but if that isn’t possible any time you have

would be greatly appreciated. The polls open at 7:00 a.m. so our first shift would be from 7:00—9:30 a.m.,

then 9:30—noon, noon– 2:30 p.m., 2:30—5:00 p.m. and 5:00—8:00 p.m. Any time you could help would be

greatly appreciated! Please call Sharon Wilczynski, 909-7016, with questions or would like to sign up to help.

Thanks to all who contribute to the food pantry. For the month of October we are asking for the following items:

October 2—1 lb. pkgs. egg noodles, 1 lb. pkgs. rice

October 9—10 oz. cans chicken noodle soup, saltines

October 16—candy (Halloween), corn muffin mix

October 23—ketchup, mustard

October 31—pork & beans, canned pasta with meat

The pantry can’t do this alone! It takes a lot of help from the congregation to keep the pantry going and will take a

lot of help to make the bake sale a success. We are very grateful for your support!

Sunday Adult Education Classes, Fall Schedule The Adult Education Committee is pleased to offer a fall semester’s worth of topics to engage and challenge all adults (and high school kids, too!) who are interested in exploring their faith and broadening their perspectives. Classes will run between services from 9:45 to 10:40. Islam - September 18 and 25, October 2 and 9 Islam is in the news almost every day, usually cast in a negative light. But how much do most of us really know about this enigmatic religion, with its 1.7 billion followers? From September 18th through October 9th, Dr. Fatih Harpci, Professor of Religion at Carthage College, has generously offered to lead four adult education classes on the topic of Islam.

Born and raised in Turkey, Dr. Harpci’s goal is “to contribute to inter-religious dialogue, especially among Christians and Muslims.” His research has included study of comparative religion, Islamic history, and Chris-tian-Muslim relations. These are the topics he/we will cover:

September 18 Basic Teachings of Islam September 25 The Koran October 2 The Intersection between Islam, Christianity and other religions, historically and today October 9 Wrap up and Q & A

Out of Africa - October 23 Our very own Laura Hermanns will tell us more about her life-changing year in Rwanda with the ELCA’s Young Adults in Global Mission program. She’ll answer your questions, too! Beyond Our Congregation: The Future of Our Church - November 6, 13, and 20 Those of us who are longtime members of HCLC remember the days when church pews and the parking lot were full, when the front of the church teemed with Sunday School kids. Though still relatively healthy, Holy Communion, like all other mainline Christian churches, has seen its membership decline. Right here in Racine, smaller churches are merging into larger ones. What do we at Holy Communion need to do to prepare for the future? Is it too late to stem the tide? Come, join the discussion!

It’s Time for Another Cooking With Class Staci Joers of Cooking with Class is returning to HCLC to offer us another fun and

delicious cooking class on Tuesday, November 1st at 6PM. Appetizer parties are a fun and social way to entertain over the holidays. Come and enjoy some gourmet

inspired recipes that are simple to prepare, yet will win rave reviews from family & friends. Staci will prepare Pancetta Crisps with Goat Cheese and Pear, Blackened

Women’s Retreat Postponed The Women’s Retreat in October postponed due to health concerns for one of the organizers. We

hope to reschedule “Choose Happiness” for a date in Spring, 2017.

New Hope Circle

The October New Hope Circle meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12th at the home of Bonnie Farley Ragenauer in Franklin. They will gather at Karen Nielsen’s home, 4236 S. Circle Drive at 6:00 p.m. to carpool to Bonnie’s home.

Tuesday Night Bible Study

Tuesday Night Bible Study meets October 18 at

6:30 in the church lounge. It will be our second

discussion of Max Lucado's book, GRACE. We will

finish chapter 2 and begin Chapter 3. All women are

welcome. Get your copy of the book for less than

$10. Lucado asks the question: "Are you too busy to

appreciate God's grace?" Join us the third Tuesday

of each month from 6:30-8:00 p.m.. We are not too

busy to grow in grace.

Quilting Group

Quilters group will meet on Tuesday, October 11th at

1:15 and Tuesday, October 25th at 1:15 in the Mark Hurn

room. If you can help, please join us. We are always

looking for more helpers and the chores are not difficult!

The quilts we are sending to Lutheran World Relief will

be displayed in the sanctuary on Sunday, October 2nd

during both services. The quilts and the other items going

to LWR will be blessed that morning during worship.

The tree at the top of the hill will light up this holiday season to honor or memorialize someone you love.

Wine and Beer Tasting Fundraiser The fundraiser at Uncorkt last November was so much

fun we’re doing it again! The second annual HCLC beer

and wine tasting event will be held on Friday, November 11th

at UnCorkt, 240 Main St. in downtown Racine. Come

discover some great wines and beers just in time for

your holiday meals and gift giving. Along with the beer

and wine there will be delicious appetizers and loads of

fabulous items and baskets to bid on in a silent auction and,

of course, great fellowship! Tickets will be $20.00 in advance

and $25.00 at the door and will be available around mid-October at church

on Sunday mornings and from the church office during the week.

If you have items you would like to donate to the silent auction or if you would be able to

Take a Walk in the Country

On Sunday, October 9th after first service, please

join us on a hike along a wooded trail and see the

beautiful array of fall colors. The hike has a mix

of woodlands, prairie & wetlands. Save the date,

October 9th, right after first service. Watch your

New Art Work in the Mark Hurn Room You may have noticed the new carved wooden artwork in the Mark Hurn room. This piece had previously hung at the Danish American Home of Racine and Lincoln Lutheran before both closed. Rev. Fred Marks, a son of HCLC and a regular volunteer at the HCLC Food Pantry, had been storing it and contacted Pastor Mark to see if Holy Communion would like to be it’s new home. A special thank you to John Lehman for picking it up and figuring out how to hang this heavy piece!

HCLC will be celebrating the talents of our young

people at the 8:30 service on October 9th and

November 13th with youth preludes. Parents and

kids: Any age student is welcome to participate

with pretty much any kind of talent! If your child

would like to participate and needs help finding a

song to sing, Kate would be happy to help them find

one. Contact Kate Potter-Barrow to sign up.

Congregation: Please mark your calendars to come

early to the 8:30 services those days to cheer on and

encourage our talented young people.

Look For the Light Christmas Program

"Look for the Light," HCLC's unique Christmas program will take place on Sunday,

December 11th, at 9:30. Please mark your calendars now and join us as our young

people and choirs tell the story of Jesus' birth in word and song - and with a few

animals of the barn making the day both fun and interesting!

All Saints’ Sunday , November 6th On All Saints’ Sunday the names of all the Holy Communion members who have died since November 1, 2015 will be read and the congregation will have the opportunity to come up to light a candle in memory of a loved one. If you have a name you would like added to the list read in church, please call or email the church office or write it on the lilac form in the Sunday bulletin and put it in the offering plate. Please have all names in to the office by November 1st.

New Member Class

All those who are interested in membership at Holy Communion or with questions about

membership are encouraged to attend a class/luncheon at noon on Sunday, November 6th.

(The Packers play at 3:30 so you’ll be home in plenty of time!) We will receive new members

on Sunday, November 13th at the 8:30 service, followed by a reception in the lounge

between services. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please let them know!

The Belle Ensemble is grateful for an opportunity to perform at Holy

Communion. Belle Ensemble means “Beautiful Together”. The group was

established in 2015 to provide first class performance of vocal chamber music, lifting to light Southeastern

Wisconsin’s wealth of professional singing talent.

On Friday, November 4, we will give the opening performance of the "Dance of Death," featuring Totentanz,

an extended motet by German war-era composer Hugo Distler, performed as a liturgical pageant in collaboration

with local actors under the direction of Maureen Cashin Bolog, of Kenosha's Actors Craft studio. The concert also

features two German settings of Psalm 84 and familiar French settings of portions of the Requiem mass. This free

concert is inspired by All Saints Day and November's place in the liturgical year, remembering "last things”.

Though a free-will donation will be taken ($15 suggested), we hope you'll come, no matter what you can afford to

Reformation Cornerstones

October 30th is Reformation

Sunday.. Every October, many

Protestants celebrate the work of

reformers like Martin Luther who brought

about much-needed change in the Christian

church. At the center of their contributions

were four teachings:

• Scripture alone: The supremacy of the

Bible as the surest guide for faith and life.

• Grace alone: The supremacy of God’s

undeserved love. God counts us “right”

with him when we accept his free gifts of

forgiveness and salvation.

• Faith alone: The supremacy of faith.

Only by believing and trusting in God’s

promises, and through no works or achieve-

ment of our own, do we receive eternal life.

• The priesthood of all believers:

Christians are “members of one

another” (Ephesians 4:25, NRSV). In God’s

eyes, Christians are all on the same level. We

each have a ministry to fulfill to one another

and to people outside the faith. Martin Luther

said we’re “reciprocally and mutually one.”
