The Chalice CONNECTION A publication of First Christian Church of Edmond, OK Vol. 2 No. 22 June 3, 2010 The Heart of Worship by Rev. Dr. Jerry W. Black, Associate Minister Summer Sunday School for Adults begins this weekend! Our theme this year is story telling through the ages. We will explore many stories from scripture and how they affect our lives and our theology. Is God for all people or just those who are Christian (or Jewish)? We have special guests and sto- rytellers, as well as some of our own youth telling their story of discovery. We will meet in the chapel from 10-11:00 every Sunday morning from June 6 through August 15th. Rev. Jerry Black launches our series this Sunday, June 6 with “The Story of a Foreigner’s Love.” All are invited, so come be a part of the story! Praise. There is nothing that makes us feel more inspired or more motivated than a little praise. Just an ounce of notice and appreciation diminishes a ton of criticism and accusation. Few things are more important to the human psyche. In the days of my military career, I only worked for one commander who lacked the capacity to recognize and acknowledge the work of those in the command. His style was to demean and criticize; require and demand. Regardless of how outstanding the performance of the soldier, team, or unit, he could only find that which was wrong. It was the one assignment when I spent more time with a dispirited leadership than troubled soldiers and their families. It was a horrible experience. So, I don’t want to let a day go by in which I don’t find some way to acknowledge the privilege of sharing ministry with you. It is an awesome gift and you are a special people. Likewise, I don’t want to be negligent expressing my thanks to God; for the simple truth of the Psalms is that God is worthy of both my heartfelt gratitude and praise. It is my reasonable worship; my response to God and God’s gift of unconditional love. Needless to say, I look forward to sharing this worship with you. Thanks, and God’s blessings to all. Jerry Summer College Class Begins June 6 Hey college students! A summer Sunday school class just for you is beginning on Sunday, June 6. The Heart of Worshipby Rev. Dr. Jerry W. Black, Associate Minister

Summer Sunday School for Adults begins this weekend! Our theme this year is story telling through the ages. We will explore many stories from scripture and how they affect our lives and our theology. Is God for all people or just those who are Christian (or Jewish)? We have special guests and sto-rytellers, as well as some of our own youth telling their story of discovery.

It was the one assignment when I spent

more time with a dispirited leadership than troubled soldiers and their families.

Jerry

She describes herself as “a teacher, a mother of two girls, a wife to a won-

Disciple-cise! Highlights of our 7th stop! Disciple-cise is a new way to exercise weekly and learn about other Disciples of Christ Churches and Seminaries as our exercise journey takes us across the country. Visit our bul-letin board in Fellowship Hall to see all of the places we have been and where we will go. 30 minutes of exercise equals 50 miles! If you have traveled with us from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Washington, DC you have exercised for 900 minutes and 1500 miles! WOW! We still have several stops to make so keep on traveling…

Stop #7– Lynchburg, Virginia 200 miles / 120 min. of exercise.Lynchburg College was founded in 1903 by Dr. Josephus Hopwood . Dr. Hopwood was president of Milligan College in Tennessee when a group of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) ministers and businessmen approached him about establishing a college in Lynchburg. Westover Hotel, a failed resort was for sale and they purchased it for $13,500. It served as the center of operations for the new college. It was called Westover Hall. The name was changed to Lynchburg College in 1919. It grew from one building to over 40 buildings in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
