The SBC statementon SalvationIV. SalvationSalvation involves the redemption of the whole man, and isoffered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord andSaviour, who by His own blood obtained eternalredemption for the believer. In its broadest sense salvationincludes regeneration, justification, sanctification, andglorification. There is no salvation apart from personal faithin Jesus Christ as Lord.Tuesday 12 July 2011 4. A. Regeneration, or the new birth, is awork of Gods grace whereby believersbecome new creatures in Christ Jesus. Itis a change of heart wrought by the HolySpirit through conviction of sin, to whichthe sinner responds in repentance towardGod and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.Repentance and faith are inseparableexperiences of grace.Repentance is a genuine turning from sintoward God. Faith is the acceptance ofJesus Christ and commitment of the entirepersonality to Him as Lord and Saviour.Tuesday 12 July 2011 5. B. Justification is Gods gracious and fullacquittal upon principles of His righteousnessof all sinners who repent and believe in Christ.Justification brings the believer unto arelationship of peace and favor with God.C. Sanctification is the experience, beginning inregeneration, by which the believer is set apartto Gods purposes, and is enabled to progresstoward moral and spiritual maturity through thepresence and power of the Holy Spirit dwellingin him. Growth in grace should continuethroughout the regenerate persons life.Tuesday 12 July 2011 6. D. Deliverance from sin for Christians onlyThis applies only to those who have been savedfrom the guilt and penalty of sin = Christians.Christians do still sin and are inclined towardssinning. The NT shows Gods way of deliverance from sin.It can shock us that we sin (so badly) - and sowe need to be sure of Gods provision fordeliverance from sin - so that we might live forthe glory of God.Not being confident in God and his provision canlead to great insecurity here.Tuesday 12 July 2011 10. Rom 7:18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. We have 2 natures - one old andsinful, one new and full of divinepotential - consider Gal 5:16-17So I say, walk by the Spirit, and youwill not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contraryto the Spirit, and the Spirit what iscontrary to the flesh. They are inconflict with each other, so that you arenot to do whatever you want.HSp and flesh are in constant battle. The only way to overcome is bywalking in the Spirit of GodTuesday 12 July 2011 19. C. Law as a rule of lifeLaw is used in a number of ways in theBible;1. 10 Commandments - Ex 31:182. System of government for Israel -commandments, judgments, ordinances -Exodus3. Governing principles of the futuremessianic kingdom - fulfilling Law andprophets - Matt 5:17-7:294. Gods revealed will for men - Rom 7:22 -For in my inner being I delight in Gods law;Tuesday 12 July 2011 20. 5. Mens rules for their own govt. -Matt 20:156. OT law - a conditional covenantof works - essentially saying theLaw (God) is If you do good, I willbless you7. Law as a dependence upon theflesh - whatever is done in the fleshin trying to observe thecommandments etc.Tuesday 12 July 2011 21. D. Grace as a rule of lifeFor a child of grace the Law is now doneaway with and has results in a Christians life:Jn 1:16 - Out of his fullness we have allreceived grace in place of grace alreadygiven.Rom 6:14 - For sin shall no longer be yourmaster, because you are not under the law,but under grace.Eph 2:14-15 - For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and hasdestroyed the barrier, the dividing wall ofhostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh thelaw with its commands and regulations.Rom 7:1-6, 2 Cor 3:1-18, Gal 3:19-25Tuesday 12 July 2011 22. 1. Legal principles of the Mosaic law now actas guiding principles for Christian life - livedout in grace2. We are delivered from a covenant of works- accepted and free to live in Christ3. Not living in the power of your own flesh -living in the power of the Spirit4. Grace means unmerited favour - whichGod instigated in his dealings with Adam -God treats us with mercy not as our actionsdeserve - this is only possible through all thatJesus did and accomplished for us. Israelaccepted the law thinking they could keep itand proved grace to be the only way of beingaccepted before GodTuesday 12 July 2011 23. 5. Grace is revealed in 3 ways:a. Salvation by graceb. Safekeeping through gracec. Grace as a rule of life for the saveda. Salvation by graceThere is no other way of salvation - Acts4:12 - in saving grace God shows his limitlesslove for the lost whilst meeting his owndemands for justice and righteousnessthrough Christ. In this God deals with everysin and obligation for payment, and allhuman merit - every aspect of human effort isdealt with by Gods grace for those whobelieve - it has to be a sovereign act of Godnot in any way dependent upon man.Tuesday 12 July 2011 24. b. Grace alone keeps safe those who aresaved - God keeps on pouring grace intothe lives of those who are saved - Rom 5:2,1 Pet 5:12 - With the help of Silas, whom Iregard as a faithful brother, I have written toyou briefly, encouraging you and testifyingthat this is the true grace of God. Stand fastin it.c. Grace as a rule of life for the saved -God teaches a way of life to those savedthrough grace so that they might live for hisglory. Living in grace means not obeying togain Gods favour but as a manifestation ofthe indwelling Spirit based on the principleof faith.Tuesday 12 July 2011 25. E. The only way of victorySuggestions for a way to live in victoryinclude:1. If we observe sufficient rules we will becompelled to live in the glory of God - thisdepends on the flesh and will fail - Rom 6:142. The Christian can seek and secureeradication of the old nature and thus be freefrom sin - the objections to this are;a. There is no Scripture to back this upb. The world, the flesh and the devil are our 3great foes - the other 2 are not eradicatedbut overcome in the power of the HSp - thesame therefore goes for the fleshTuesday 12 July 2011 26. c. No human experience confirms this - and if it were true parents would give birth to sinless children. d. When accepted, what need is there for the ministry of the HS
