CHAD M HAYASHI | LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

I am current third-year Landscape architect student at Arizona State University. My interest and devotion to the practice of design is realized through the unity of art, science and cultural awareness in my projects.

I intend to pursue design solutions that respond to the environment, the people, and the greater context through a beneficial and functional relationship between them. I see the successful partnership of natural and urban systems as a more fulfilling experience for the public.

My enjoyment of design, philosophy, and critical thinking are the influences that drive each project. My current academic plans include finishing my Bachelor’s of Science in Landscape Architecture at ASU, and eventually completing a Master’s Degree in Architecture to enable the potential for a license in each practice, leaving for a greater understanding of the synthesis between the two.

My hobbies range from art and design history, drawing, gardening, writing, cooking, gaming, and traditional photography and film development.

Gilbert Community Master Plan “WEAVE”

OBJECTIVE

The mission of the Weave Community is to provide an outstanding quality of living by creating a completely connected neighborhood through the use of parks and open space. The community will be net-zero energy efficient and create a place unique to itself while staying true to the principals of the City of Gilbert and promoting a sense of stewardship among the residents for their community.

Through an extensive analysis and observation of the existing site, a plan that weaves together living, working, and relaxation was developed. A system of greenbelts links residential with commercial, forming a strong axis along an open corridor that links the community to the rest of the Heritage district of Gilbert.

Star Gazing Site

OBJECTIVE

The mission of the future McDowell Sonoran preserve is to maintain the existing conditions of the site for future generations, while giving the proximate communities a symbol of a place to cherish and appreciate.

Alternative concepts that respond to the site, feedback from instructors and peers, and critical analysis of site context and inventory were all factors that influenced this project. This master planning exercise was intended to broaden the scope of Landscape Architecture by delving in to the design process and inventory analysis required in most projects.

Neighborhood Park In-Fill (Echelon Park)

OBJECTIVE

To design a neighborhood park that has a strong relationship to site context and culture, while providing a place of reprise for the residential population and local businessmen and women. The site also had potential to address current ecological issues such as the urban-heat island effect, and water reclamation.

A symmetrical plan, simple but powerful gesture, and relative flatness of Echelon Park combine to create a dense grove in the heart of Downtown Phoenix; this park was designed to create a place for all inhabitants to occupy. The mesquite bosque doubles as a retention basin, while all paved surfaces drain to collect rainwater throughout the year.

Artisan House “The Urban Sanctuary”

OBJECTIVE

Roosevelt Row is a unique district of downtown Phoenix; home to a wide range of the arts, culture, socioeconomic tiers and living conditions. The site at 5th Street and Roosevelt is at the dead center of this rising community and mecca of the arts, giving us a tremendous opportunity to embrace everything that makes this area so unique in its design.

By emphasizing the areas distinct “downtown” vibe and helping to further ascertain identity, the site’s design can help to expand Roosevelt Row as a premiere community of Phoenix. A combination of comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces with the unique style that reflects the surrounding area will further establish the site and help bring Phoenix back to its former magnificence as a desirable city to live, work and play.

Pioneers Memorial Cemetery Park

OBJECTIVE

Pioneers Memorial Park is a site that the city of Phoenix has forgotten, left to age for over one hundred years with minimal upkeep. Nearly three thousand of Arizona’s settlers are buried here, but only seven hundred eighty two are represented by standing headstones. The design proposal for the site stems from the concept of how the people from the past are still able to communicate with us today.

Extensive concept process work and analysis, sustainability, passive cooling, and an artistic approach to honoring the past were all key components in shaping the project. In this proposal, a rooftop garden serves as a quiet reflection space that overlooks the entire site, while a lowered terrace offers water retention and collection, as well as an alternative entrance to the visitor’s center.

Concrete House II Case Studies

OBJECTIVE

The primary goals for the course were to introduce students to a wide range of architectural anddesign software, including AutoCAD, Autodesk REVIT, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. Students were given a specific existing project from a wide range around the world to explore and analyze critically. Through the use of these various programs, students delved in to systems of organization, construction, form, space, and parti.

Focusing primarily on architectural systems, the class used drawings and 3D models constructed from scratch to better understand these systems and how successful projects come together while learning necessary computer skills and techniques.
