In addition to performances in theatre, dance and music; as well as art exhibitions, student showcases, faculty and student recitals; the college offers lecture series, colloquia and critical discussions on artistic, academic, political and social issues. Dear Friends of CFA,

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2015-2016 CFA @ LMU Events and Performance Season. The critical and creative efforts of the College of Communication and Fine Arts are always in allegiance and alignment with the university mission. And the first prong of the university mission statement also invokes the essential role of CFA to the university mission—insisting on critical thinking and the development of imagination and artistic expression—as cornerstones to learning, and the open celebration of the traditions of the campus. We take that role seriously!

The 2015-16 Event and Performance Season has a range of events and activities that will touch the mind, heart and spirits of all involved, and those who attend. From performances in theatre, dance and music to art exhibitions, faculty and student recitals; lectures, colloquia and critical discussions on artistic, academic, political, career and social issues—the events and performances are designed to push the boundaries of the expected, using the critical work of performance and artistic expression to force a critical contemplation of the most compelling issues to which humanity grapples and elevates. Each event serves as both process and product of our pedagogies—always engaged in information, formation and transformation—as yet another service to the LMU mission as we prepare our students to enter their chosen career pathways.

KaleidoLA: The Speaker Series of the Department of Art and Art History provides a context to explore a ‘kaleidoscopic’ range of interdisciplinary and intersecting experiences and pathways in the art world and Los Angeles. The Friday speaker series features presentations and workshops by a spectrum of emerging and veteran practitioners, as well as recent alumni within studio arts, art history and beyond.

For the 2015–16 academic year, KaleidoLA: The Speaker Series of the Department of Art and Art History will feature artists, art historians and panel presentations.

Patrick Scott is a filmmaker who creates original work for companies like Dollar Shave Club, Playboy and Discovery. His films have accumulated over 70 million views online and have been showcased in festivals worldwide including Sundance. Patrick earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in film from California Institute of the Arts. His production company, Zoochosis, is headquartered in Venice Beach.

A User Experience Designer/Interaction Designer/& Design Researcher with a BFA in Painting from Colorado State University and an MFA from the Art Center College of Design: Media Design Program, Becker generates new understanding and insight into otherwise unexplored areas within design, culture, and business. He is a designer who uses creative thinking to understand existing problems in order to forge innovative and unique solutions. Clients include OKGO, POPTECH, CB2, VW, HTC, HYUNDAI, WB, DISNEY, ACTIVISION, EA, MATTEL & PEARSON and many more.

KaleidoLA: The Speaker Series— Hollis Goodall, Curator of Japanese Art (LACMA). November 6 | 12:15–1:15 P.M. Murphy Recital Hall

Engaged at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art since 1981, with a two-year hiatus as Research Fellow at the University of Kyoto in Japan between 1986 and 1988, Goodall is now Curator of Japanese Art. Goodall oversees installations in the Pavilion for Japanese Art, planning of exhibitions for the Japanese department and in cooperation with other museum departments, educational programs, web programming, as well as collection management, growth, and research. From April 1988 to January 2015, Hollis has overseen more than 270 installations of permanent collection and special exhibitions. She is presently completing a catalogue, “Living for the Moment: Japanese Prints” from the Barbara S. Bowman Collection. Ms. Goodall earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas with honors in 1977, then a master’s degree in East Asian art from the University of Kansas.

Dr. Christine Sciacca, assistant curator of manuscripts, Getty Center, is a specialist in Italian, German, and Ethiopian manuscript illumination, with a focus on liturgy, devotional practice, and patronage.“Food for Thought: Culinary Evidence in Medieval and Renaissance Manuscript Illumination”

KaleidoLA: The Speaker Series: Dr. Melody Rodari, Assistant Professor of Art History (LMU).November 20 | 12:15–1:15 P.M. Murphy Recital Hall

Professor Rodari received her B.A. and M.A. in art history and museum studies from Boston University, and her Ph.D. in art history from UCLA in 2010. Prior to coming to LMU, she was curator of Asian art at the Norton Simon Museum. Her research investigates the development and evolution of Buddhist art in Southeast Asia with focus on modern and contemporary Buddhist visual culture in Thailand. Professor Rodari’s work also examines the history of collecting and displaying South and Southeast Asian art in American and European museums.

FALL 2015The Communication Studies Colloquia provides critical discussion of cutting-edge theories and perspectives in the disciplinary interests that cross the department: media arts and society, organizational communication and relational communication; law, social change and justice; and, advocacy advertising and public relations. The presentations will be made through a combination of faculty lectures, visiting scholars and invited guests.

Market leader and principal at Buck Consultants’ Southern California and Arizona offices, Sanchez joined Buck Consultants in April 2012 following a move from New York and positions at the headquarters of two other global consulting firms. Sanchez has more than 25 years

of experience in human resources management and consulting. FALL 2015Richard Renaldi Touching StrangersSeptember 12–November 22 Laband Art Gallery

“Richard Renaldi is a matchmaker for tense times, asking complete strangers to pose with their bodies touching, as if they were intimates.” Working on the street with a large format 8 x 10 view camera, he creates spontaneous and fleeting relationships between strangers for the camera, often pushing his subjects beyond their comfort levels. The resulting photographs are moving and provocative, and raise profound questions about the possibilities for positive human connection in a diverse society.

For two nights, a series of dance duets—inspired by Richard Renaldi's photographs and his concept of “touching strangers”—will enliven the gallery space. Like the people in Renaldi's photographs, the dancers will come together from various communities. The duets are choreographed by LMU Professor Rosalynde LeBlanc Loo. The event is in collaboration with LMU’s Dance Program.

SPRING 2016From Clay to The Cloud: The Internet Archive and Our Digital LegacyJanuary 23 – March 20 Laband Art Gallery

From Clay to The Cloud explores the human impetus to preserve our cultural heritage. Twenty years ago, the Internet Archive took on the challenge of creating a digital repository—a 21st century Library of Alexandria—where swaths of our lives from the Internet and other sources will be stored for generations to come. On view in the exhibition are ancient clay cuneiforms representing some of the earliest forms of preservation of knowledge. Featured as well are Nuala Creed’s ceramic portraits of many of the archivists working at the Internet Archive. Her sculptures remind us of the crucial human involvement in this digital archive. There are also hands-on displays offering visitors the opportunity to dive into the vast “storerooms” of the Internet Archive. The exhibition looks at past and present archival practices and asks: What will our cultural legacy be for the future?

Each spring, current LMU art students are invited to enter Young Contemporaries and to have their work judged by two professionals from Los Angeles’ art world. The Laband’s annual juried student show features works of art in all the disciplines taught in LMU’s art program including drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, painting, ceramics, graphic design, and new media. The exhibition provides an excellent professional experience for students and celebrates the amazing creativity brewing in LMU’s Art Department.

The concert will be preceded by an informal engagement with students from 4:00–5:00 P.M. Owens is a master woodwind musician who plays all reed instruments, including soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon and English horn. His rare ability to produce original sounds on all of these instruments places him in demand as a first-call studio musician, and a jazz artist of international repute. Owens has toured, performed and recorded with an impressive array of artists including John Carter, the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra, Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, Dave Grusin, Gladys Knight, the Buddy Rich Band, and Barbra Streisand. He has played on numerous hit records, including the Grammy Award-winning Duke Ellington album, Hot and Bothered. Owens also tours the United States and Europe with his own group, which produced two albums on Discovery Records.
