Key Trends02-2017

CES 2017

For tech lovers, CES is the biggest and best event of the year. Not only does it introduce us to a bunch of cool new products, it also helps to establish and define the trends we'll be seeing throughout the year ahead. Some of them are more obvious than others, which is why we like to take a moment after the show to step back and digest everything.

Many of the trends we saw last year still hold true for 2017, but technology is ever-evolving. If you're into voice assistants or virtual reality, this is definitely your year, but there is still plenty more to get excited about. Lets not wait any more, here are the top trends we spotted at CES this year.

Alexa shouts above its rivals

The technology that stole the show at CES 2017Even if Amazon didnt have a booth, Alexa was everywhere, it was the star of the showWhat is Alexa?Voice recognition platform, developed by AmazonIntroduced by Amazon Echo that you put in your houseAlexa strenghts:Can be integrated into other connected objectsIT guys can develop skills for AlexaWorks with the cloud

Alexa is everywhere and important fact is that they were NOT even an official exhibitor.

Amazon Echo is a hands-free speaker you control with your voice. Echo connects to the Alexa Voice Service to play music, provide information, news, sports scores, weather, and moreinstantly. All you have to do is ask.

Echo has seven microphones and beam forming technology so it can hear you from across the roomeven while music is playing. Echo is also an expertly tuned speaker that can fill any room with 360 immersive sound. When you want to use Echo, just say the wake word "Alexa" and Echo responds instantly. If you have more than one Echo or Echo Dot, Alexa responds intelligently from the Echo you're closest to with ESP (Echo Spatial Perception). Learn more about ESP.

Its more than just the Echo. Alexa is everywhere...

For the 1st time at CES, all connected devices can work together (from Alexa to a sunshade). Who?By giving developers access to the Alexa voice service platform, Amazon has created countless opportunities to integrate the voice (and brain) behind the echo into other connected / smart products.

WhatSome of the most notable integrations of Alexa were with cars (Hyundai, Ford), robots (LG Hub, Lynx, Mattel), refrigerators (LG), and smart home products (Vivint, Whirlpool).

What do we think about it?Consumers will be able to interact with their entire connected environment through the most natural way possible: their voice. As Alexa is poised to become the worlds #1 voice assistant, retailers will have no choice but to become accessible through this platform and develop meaningful experiences. Just remember that Alexa already belongs to the worlds largest retailer ;).

CES = Car Electronic Show

Cars get smarter (and autonomous)

Automakers once again made a big splash at the Consumer Electronics Show this year. Ford, Mercedes, BMW, FCA, Volkswagen and more showed off new automotive tech ranging from self-driving systems and electric cars to new user interfaces. In total, some nine automotive manufacturers, 11 tier-one auto suppliers, and more than 300 vehicle tech-related exhibitors were in attendance at the massive tech conference. Autonomous cars, while not quite ready to drive off the lot, will inch closer to market.

The car will come equipped with a package of sensors, including cameras, radar and lidar, to enable self-driving capability at a future date.

19HiMirror

1st HiMirror, one of the worlds first smart beauty mirrors, just unveiled its new Plus edition and accompanying HiSkin device. The Basic model, retailing at $189, was named a CES 2017 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Smart Home product category.

The products touch-free design completes a personalized analysis of your skin by just taking your picture. The examination breaks down surface-level flaws such as complexion, sun damage, pores, and wrinklesthen recommends products and routines to fix every flaw.

HiSkin, a hand-held device that connects to the HiMirror, brings the analysis to a deeper level. With a single click, the $50 gadget evaluates the skins cuticle moisture, subcutaneous pigmentation, dark circles, acne scars, and environmental factors.

With the addition of HiMirror Plus and HiSkin, users can now have access to information often reserved for (expensive) dermatologist visits and proactively ward off visible signs of aging, Simon Shen, CEO of HiMirror and its parent company, said in a press release.Hiskin, after being connected to HiMirror, gives you a deeper analysis of your skin. 20Carnival is turningits ships into floating connected hotels

To read: https://www.jwtintelligence.com/2017/01/ces-2017-cruising-customization/This year at CES, the conversation on wearable tech was moving away from all-purpose fitness tracking bands and toward devices for specific uses.During his keynote, Carnival CEO Arnold W. Donald introduced the Ocean Medallion, a disc the size of a quarter designed to help take guest personalization to a new level. The device uses a guest-centric, Internet of Things approach to enable guests to maximize their experiences in real time based on their choices and preferences, according to the company.

The Ocean Medallion, paired with an app called Ocean Compass, functions as a kind of digital concierge, seamlessly conveying information about the guest across the ship. For example, servers at all dining locations could know in advance about a guests dietary restrictions, favorite cocktails or wine preferences. The app might also alert a guest of an upcoming activity based on their interests. An adventurous guest, for example, might be reminded to book a kayaking shore excursion, while a wine lover could be informed of an upcoming tasting.

While Carnival hasnt yet said much about advertising, the same kind of data used to tailor the guest experience could also be used to deliver targeted messages.A network of 7,000 sensors throughout the ship enables these functions, as well as others such as easily locating friends and family. The medallion also allows guests to enter their rooms without the need to tap the device, pay for items throughout the ship without additional cards or money, and embark and debark more easily. For security, crew members can verify each guests identity by referencing a photo that appears on their own screens along with each transaction.ruises.

224Robots are on the rise

4

2017 was the year of personal and commercial robotsRobots are on the rise

First year we felt a human-like presence when talking to robots. They can now follow-up with us, react to our emotions, mimic humans = it makes all the differenceThey can do a lot of tasks (play with children, recognize who is talking to them, be proactive, manage IoT)

24

Personal Assistant

The most famous is Pepper (developed by SoftBank)He can notice your emotions and act in response to themPepper is so famous that he has been spreading out and used by some retailers ()A/B test in stores, different types of promotions, learn from behaviours

Who?CES 2017 was definitely the year of personal and commercial robots. Softbanks robot Pepper might be the most recognizable robot of them all.

What?A human-shaped robot, who can engage in conversations, provide useful information and assistance, and even play a game of cards against humanity with you (as seen @ CES). Pepper can perceive emotions and adapt his behavior to how you are feeling today.

What do we think about it?It has been deployed in more than 140 Softbank mobile stores and has made his grand debut in US shopping centres (Westfield) and in other locations (pizza hut, cruises, etc.). Initial data shows an impressive increase in foot traffic and revenues at brick-and-mortar stores using Pepper.

25Hover CameraPassport

Another favorite tech = Hover Camera PassportA drone that can take selfie/photos. You can bring it wherever you want. Why is he unique?Easy to transportCan do face trackingIn the a near future, we will see drones following people and to do specific tasks

Who?Hover Camera specializes in the portable drone. They showcased their new Passport product at CES 2017, which they call : Your Foldable, Self-Flying Personal Photographer. What? This is next level selfies. Once deployed, or unfold, the Passport follows its owner autonomously wherever he goes - all in 4K of course. What is the most impressive about the Passport is its size: What do we think about? So many drones everywhere. We cant deny that it is here to stay. Hey lets take a picture. Wait, I have my drone with me in my bag.

Immersing people into the future

VR and AR experiences through mobile phones

Asus went to CES with a new mobile phone featuring both Google Tango AR and Google VR Daydream platform, a strong commitment to the industry. And breaking news! We predict the bigger players such as Apple and Google will soon launch their next generation of iPhone.

--Who?The Asus Zenfone AR is a smartphone specifically designed for powerful consumer AR and VR experiences. What?Asus new smartphone is compatible with Google Daydream View for VR, has a tri-camera system that can achieve depth sensing 3D scanning and AR via Google Tango, and is running some of the most powerful hardware. What do we think about?A good indication of where the industry is heading. As brands are trying to develop the new Pokemon Go, more and more consumers will be able to access immersive VR and AR experiences through their mobile phones (for entertainment but also for online shopping and virtual try-on).

A new way to see the world throught AR

Tango by Google...

Tango is an Augmented reality Computing platform...from Google.

Technology allows for these devices to find their way in space thanks to sensors (gyroscope)With this technonology, we can create experiences with space/indoor navigation, 3D mapping and augmented reality.

Now, the fashion world is showing interest in VR headset design ( not so fashionable actually!) Murge VR manufactures headsets into different colours to gain competitive advantage in a very crowded space (Mobile VR, HMD Manufactures)The other big trend at CES was the wireless headsets : a better experience without the wires. Moreover, Intel and Lenovo presented headsets prototypes with inside-out trackings. It enables to move inside the VR environment without the sensors that we see today (as HTC Vive for example).

Samsung4D Experience

Who?Samsung continues to create extreme 360 experiences! What?Participants get a feel for extreme aircraft stunts through the new Whiplash Pulsar 4D chair and the Samsung Gear. What do we think about?Samsung Air Show is a main competitor to Six Flag activities...I am pretty convinced that Six Flag will order such experiences soon within its parks.

You can't have people in the production line itself, otherwise you drop to people speed.

Fintech

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, forbids humans to access Tesla factory:just to fix the machines, develop and modernize them.

Venmo. Best features? Split the bill.

Who?Venmo is a financial services provider, aggregator of financial information offering value-added services.

What?Venmo se lie avec votre banque et offre des offres intressantes all your banking and offers great features like send a gift and pay in-mobile apps. Best feature? Split the bill. After you eat, you can split the restaurant bill using Venmo, or split the rent with your roommates. Theres also a chat feature to keep it social.

What do we think about it?The share economy is ripe for this kind of technology, that helps customers share the cost, easily.

PayPal acquired Venmo, a payment app popular with the younger generation, as part of its $800 million acquisition of payment processing startup Braintree in 2014. Now Venmo is one of the shining stars in PayPal's portfolio, according to PayPal CEO Dan Schulman.PayPal, which spun off from eBay last year, is a giant in the payments world with 184 million active users and 14.5 million merchants. In 2015, it generated $9.2 billion in revenue.Venmo, a mobile app that lets users send money to each other instantly, is a lot like PayPal's core service. People can use it to pay back their friends for dinner or pay their share of the rent.Venmo handled $7.5 billion in transactions in 2015, and in January 2016, it had its first $1 billion month.Schulman, speaking at Fortune's Brainstorm Tech conference on Wednesday, admitted that millennials may be confused about the relationship between PayPal and Venmo. He recalled a college student who came up to him after a speech he made at New York University and who told him that Venmo was far better than using PayPal.The student didn't know that PayPal owned Venmo. "I'm okay with that," Schulman said, laughing. The secret sauce of Venmo is turning a transaction into an experience," Schulman said, adding that Venmo was the third most popular mobile app downloaded last year. "It's almost ubiquitous among millennials.More recently, PayPal started making money from Venmo by allowing merchants to accept Venmo as a payments option. Merchants like food delivery service Munchery and event tickets seller Gametime are now able to accept Venmo payments from customers who place orders through Venmo's iPhone apps. Those merchants are charged a small fee for each transaction."We are being wise and thoughtful about monetizing Venmo," Schulman said. "We want to make sure we aren't putting the wrong metrics on it."
