Guitar – Playing Within the Chord (tunes & improvisation) – Barry ChernIt’s not always about the scale, especially in folk styles. As the playing of two of my heroes Maybelle Carter and Mississippi John Hurt shows us, a lot of tune can emerge while we are still fingering the chord. In fact, the chord is usually the framework of most melodies. So why wave your fingers all over the place looking for a note? Hold onto that chord, and hear what its internal voices are saying.
