  • MMEA Central District - Jr. Jazz Audition Music

Worcester-shire SauceThis piece has been commissioned by the MMEA Central District for the exclusive use of district schools participating in the 2012 junior jazz auditions. Teachers of auditioning schools may print and copy these parts as needed to accommodate those students interested in auditioning from their school. It may not be used by any ensemble not participating in this years district audition process. This includes the copying or sharing of written music and accompanying audio files that extend beyond student preparation for Central District auditions.

When this years auditions are over, all rights to this song return to Jeff Bolduc, and permission would be needed for this piece to be copied after that date. Teachers may retain a master set of this piece (or this digital file) with the understanding that this piece may be reused by the MMEA Central District as part of a three year cycle of original pieces specifically composed for this purpose.

This piece is not intended for public performance, and may not be used without the express written consent of Jeff Bolduc (jabolduc@aol.com; 978 766-7638).

Note: We hope to save schools from having to pay money each year for audition materials. Please act in good faith with regards to using it for its intended purpose. It is understood that you may use this piece within your jazz curriculum to teach song form, improv. styles, etc. on top of just preparing kids for auditions. However, only schools who traditionally participate in jazz auditions should be copying or sharing these files. ! - Michael Morel, Simon Harding, Jeff Bolduc

  • These pieces were created so all participating students can work on the same piece while preparing to audition for a spot in District Jazz Band. Within the full score, each part was created to also serve as a stand alone test of skill necessary for acceptance into that ensemble. Be very specific with articulations and dynamic markings. The advantage of correlating the audition parts into one ensemble piece is that teachers can now rehearse and prepare multiple students at the same time instead of preparing nine separate pieces. The worry, however, is that by practicing as a full band, the individual parts may get lost in the mix. Ultimately, the individual parts will be auditioned - not in relation to any other part within the ensemble - but as a stand alone piece. Teachers should make sure to prepare each individual participant beyond full ensemble sessions.

Worcester-shire Sauce is a Latin piece in 4 sections: opening fanfare, main melody which repeats for solos, closing transition, and cadenza. The D Phrygian scale, which is based on the 3rd note of the Bb major scale, is used throughout. Other characteristics of the Latin style are the use of cut time, trills and syncopated rhythms.

Heres the way the audition would work: Students will play the written scale to start their audition.Winds - Play measures 1 through 4 as written, or perhaps add some embellishment to the fanfare melody. Play meas. 5 through the 1st ending as written. On the repeat, students may choose to improvise, repeat the melody as written, or perhaps add embellishments to the existing melody as they see fit. They would then move on to the second ending and into meas. 36 to 43, which should be played as written. From 44 to 49 is a cadenza - play as written, improvise over the changes, or alter the melody as much or as little as desired to get to the fermata.

Rhythm section - Play the written parts throughout. When repeating meas. 1 through the 1st ending, piano, guitar, and bass have the choice to improvise, or comp on the changes.

All auditions will be performed with an accompaniment CD when in the audition room.

Rehearsal suggestions:This piece may also be used as part of an improv lesson for any Jazz Band. The included counterline allows for one student to improvise while other winds play the accompaniment material. You can repeat through the 1st ending as often as needed to allow everyone a chance to solo. The melody has also been included on the guitar and piano parts to give those players insight into the actual tune they are accompanying.

Solo tips:This uses a typical Latin chord progression: Dmi - Eb - Dmi - Eb - Dmi - Eb - Dmi - A7 (b9, b13). The scales at the beginning alternate between the first 2 chords. The A7 scale is missing, but soloists should focus on using a C# instead of a C natural when they get to this chord. Teachers may want to sketch out the chord tones for this one chord for students working on improvisation.
