3. STUDENT BOARD REPRESENTATIVES Katrina Augustine, Hawthorne HS student board representative, reported on their school’s academics, athletics, and activities as follows: all academies are busy attending field trips to community partners impacting the lives of HHS students with intensive, engaging instruction; VAPA and World Languages Department have Dia de Muertos (day of the Dead) events in late October and early November; Fall sports are ongoing (football, cross country, girls volleyball). Cougar football team plays against El Segundo for Homecoming on 10/24/14 at 7:00pm; HHS has over 40 active clubs and organizations. They are invited and encouraged to participate in Spirit Week for the upcoming Homecoming; PBIS is planning its first Cougar Buy Back; Link Crew in collaboration with other clubs and academies are planning Halloween Fun on campus while continuing to support the Freshmen. There was also an invitation for Alumni Reception for Homecoming 2014 to be held on Friday, October 24th at 5:00pm, Hawthorne Media Center.

Marihanna Garcia, Lawndale HS student board representative, reported the following activities that happened in their school: ASB representatives met with Lawndale Mayor Robert Pullen-Miles and are working with the mayor to get involved in the school community; hosted the first Homecoming rally last Friday; Link Krew hosted a tailgate party to get Freshmen involved with Homecoming football game; LW football team won against Culver City; there were 200 attendees at the Homecoming dance; Daniel Hernandez and Cristina Ramirez were Homecoming King and Queen; three basketball players were signed into universities—Chimezie, Buddha, and Chris White; a senior assembly was held today to recognize senior honor roll students; there were 233 seniors in honor roll; also, Link Crew students presented to 9th graders in their Freshmen Seminar classes today; PBIS is hosting “Rockstoberfest” where teachers and students can earn extra prizes for demonstrating ROCKS (Respect, Ownership, Commitment, Kindness, Safety); Drama is rehearsing for “Annie” to be performed on November 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 in the CVCA; working on getting all students to take the Graduate for Ma’s Pledge to graduate, with a link to getschooled.com for articles about colleges and careers and earn points to win prizes; Ms. Garcia thanked the Board for providing Lawndale students with free flu vaccinations. Claudia Gonzalez, Leuzinger HS student board representative, reported the numerous events and activities that transpired in their school: Leuzinger alumni Dorell Wright who is a Portland Trailblazer basketball player, was the principal for the day to promote the six pillars of SPIRIT, and visited classrooms and shared words of wisdom, and gave away a lot of things; ASB met with Ron Hacker, Business Services Asst. Supt. and Asst. Food Services Director Alicia Mendez to discuss ways to increase student participation in the lunch program; a visit by Lawndale Mayor Robert Pullen-Miles on 10/3/14 to talk to students about ways for youth to get more involved in the community; also partnering with the city to promote blood drive; work together to put on a Cultural Fair in the community; plan to have the Mayor and the board president to be Principal of the Day; Spirit Week last week; On Friday, homecoming activities at lunch time, homecoming game at night where at half-time, King, Queen, Prince, and Princess were selected—Samisoni Lauaki, Uheina Tukutau, Samir Suarez, Eameli Smith, respectively; hosted Under the Sea homecoming dance on Saturday at Lawndale Community Center; ASB planning to hold 2nd annual Halloween Dance on 10/30/14; American Red Cross blood drive on 11/12/14; PSAT exam on Wednesday; ASB officers and Ms. Iveland attended CADA and CASL to get ideas on building school spirit and increase participation in campus activities; town hall meeting on 10/30/14 at 6:00pm with parents and students and the Lawndale Mayor.

Yamilette Sandoval and Chaneil Spencer, Lloyde High School ASB secretary, spoke on behalf of Chaneil Spencer and, reported the following events at their school: Red Ribbon Week will include kick off assembly on October 23rd; Friday Fun Day with special student performances; Pajama Day on 10/27/14; 80s & 90s Day on 10/28/14; Hippie Day on 10/29/14; Halloween Day on 10/30/14 where students will dress up. On Renaissance, they will have class field trip to the CARE conference, where they can discuss different ideas such as watching the sun set; also beach clean up.

4. ITEMS FROM CSEA, CHAPTER 47 CSEA president Cesar Perez commented on an item on page 8 stating that the district needs personnel who have skills to handle equipment; happy with the positions that are being approved this evening; encouraged the district to have training for new employees and encouraged administrators to engage with the new staff; stated he will be happy to see the data processing at Hawthorne filled; happy to have eligibility pools in different positions; concerned that there are only four grounds workers in the district; made a suggestion to consider resources and have an evaluation of what employees are really doing; publicly thanked the employees who are resigning for their services; reminded the board/administration to be careful with the money from LCAP and the budget.

5. ITEMS FROM CVSTA/CTA CVSTA president Jack Foreman expressed his disappointment in having the CVSTA item pushed back; happy about the superintendent search and grateful to hire a search firm; happy to report that district morale is much better and happy to have a normal school year; thanks Principal Rodas for taking an active role with regards to the A/C issue at Lawndale HS who took active steps with Dr. Mucerino and Mr. Hacker; commented that there are too many meetings going on, suggesting that staff development and professional development meetings can be condensed to the essentials.

6. PRESENTATIONS A. Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) Introductions

Kelly Santos, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, introduced the 2014-2015 Teachers on Special Assignment—Dr. Tania Cabeza (Pathway Specialist, all sites), May de Guzman (Literacy Specialist, Leuzinger HS), Erin Estrada (co-Teaching Specialist, all sites), Kelly Henderson (Mathematics specialist, Lawndale HS), Chris Itson (Literacy Specialist, Lawndale HS), Naehee Kwun (Mathematics Specialist, Hawthorne HS), Jenifer Mai (Pathway Connections Specialist, all sites), Tina Preciado (Literacy Specialist, Hawthorne HS), Miguel Rojas, Jr. (Title I & Parent Involvement Specialist, all sites), and Grace Yang (Mathematics Specialist, Leuzinger HS).

B. Recognition of Dr. Tania Cabeza Kelly Santos, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, introduced Dr. Tania Cabeza who was presented a certificate by the Board members in recognition for supporting CV teachers in successfully writing new courses for UC approval.

C. International Baccalaureate Diploma Students’ Service Trip to Brasil, August 1-10, 2014 Presenters: Ruth Cebreros, Huy Hoang, and IB Students showed a slide show of what they experienced in Brasil and how they spent time with students from another country. Students and chaperones travelled 26 hours to Brasil and visited IB schools and remarked that it was encouraging to talk to someone from other countries. They visited an elementary schools with only one teacher with different classes and were taught how to speak Portuguese.

D. Hawthorne High School’s Senior Dinner Event Ms. Augustine, on behalf of Dr. Newell, and Dr. Temisha Brame, reported on the First Senior Dinner event at Hawthorne HS held on 08/22/14. The theme of the event was a commitment to graduate. Hawthorne administrators and teachers, as well as board president Hugo Rojas gave speeches. Seniors were provided information on upcoming activities and had specific counseling sessions regarding graduation requirements and college application deadlines.

E. LMU: Environmental Action: Improve Your Neighborhood Through Environmental Research Dr. Jason Douglas, Director of Restorative Justice Program, is from the Applied Research Center at Loyola Marymount University. Dr. Douglas conducts research with underserved communities to develop an understanding of environmental issues at the local, state, and federal levels. His work educates and empowers individuals exposed to social, economic, and environmental disparities. He made the presentation to describe an action research project he is conducting in the district’s school community.

F. G. “What If……?” Student created video - Media Career Academy Sean Hiller, Teacher, Diego Jimenez and Hector Gonzalez, Students, presented a student-created video that was part of a presentation by Dr. Mucerino and Principal Michael Ono at the STEM conference in Texas earlier this month.

H. Overview of Food Services Operations Alicia Mendez, Assistant Director, Food Services, made a presentation of the Food Services Department

and gave an overview of the food services operations, its mission, the extensive variety of their school breakfast program and school lunch program and showed the October breakfast and lunch menus; gave information about the high quality of scratch cooking and its fresh produce and ingredients, and top of the line kitchen equipment; Ms. Mendez indicated that the school’s meals meet the new federal nutrition standards, nutrition requirement, and meal requirements, and that Food Services Department has an excellent customer service.

C. Selection of CVUHSD Board Representative to the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association (LACSTA) for 2014-2015 The Board selected board vice president Gloria Ramos to be the CVUHSD board representative to the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association (LACSTA) for 2014-2015.

13. PUBLIC COMMENTS: NON-AGENDA ITEMS

Nicolette Rabago Lindner, student, thanked the Board and administration for the CNA program Yvette Lindner, community member, spoke and thanked Ms. Rodas and Dr. Mucerino for a tour of Lawndale High School on September 16. She was thankful for opening the doors of Lawndale HS for the tour. Norma Navarro, parent, spoke about request for funding for the Leuzinger HS band activities such as competitions and uniforms for Leuzinger students; the Band Room needs a lot of work; no security alarm, no acoustics; lacking instruments, lacking band uniforms. Mr. Cox will be looking at this matter.

14. ITEMS FROM BOARD

Board member Rocio Pizano remarked that all the presentations were great and inspirational, and congratulated the retirees for their years of service. Board clerk Lorena Gonzalez was happy to watch all the presentations—recognizing the teachers; she thanked the organizations/individual donors for their donations; congratulated the retirees; commented on the Brazil trip presented by students; gave kudos to Sean Hiller, Diego Jimenez, and Hector Gonzalez for their What If… video presentation, commenting that students are really appreciating the new buildings and their schools. Board vice president Gloria Ramos thanked everybody and remarked that Maria Eborn started the Hawthorne students’ trip to Brazil; stated that the administration is trying hard to bring back all teachers; personally remarked that board members have more opportunity now to talk as a board.

15. ITEMS FROM SUPERINTENDENT Interim superintendent Bob Cox expressed his positive remarks about the things that are being done in the district as a team and there is so much to celebrate as district stakeholders collaborate on various matters and get positive results.
