In the February Lamplighter, we asked that you submit memory articles detailing your first impressions or experiences with Arbor Acres. In celebration of the 40th anniversary, we will be sharing these submissions with you on a monthly basis. Please enjoy–and please keep ‘em coming!

Memories of Arbor AcresMichael Newman, Emeritus FAIAMy memories go back to when the dream became Arbor Acres.

In 1976, my architecture firm was selected as the design firm for what has become Arbor Acres.

This really goes back to 1975. I was present when the Western North Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church approved at a special meeting at Lake Junaluska, the establishment of The Triad United Methodist Home, now known as Arbor Acres United Methodist Home.

One day in 1976, Bill Womble invited me and others to visit the northern most acreage of the Children’s Home. This site was to become Arbor Acres. We entered by an unimproved road leading to Wachovia Arbor Moravian Church. The grave yard still exists. The rolling land was home to a large abandoned apple orchard. We tromped through the overgrowth and discovered two springs that were the beginnings of two streams that joined as they ran down the hill to become Peter’s Creek.

The two streams were later dammed up to become the lake at the heart of Arbor Acres.

Moving ahead to 1980, the core buildings were completed. One day I got a phone call from Bill Womble. He said “Michael, the lake is losing water. What are you going to do about it?” I said

“Mr. Womble (I did not call him Bill at that time) I will look into the problem.” I hung up, with sweat pouring out, and thought, “What am I going to do?”

I decided to contact the North Carolina State University extension division. I hoped that they might be aware of some North Carolina farm ponds that have had a similar problem. Sure enough, they did and they recommended a dry type of loose clay material, known as Granular Bentonite Pond Clay. The material came in 45-pound bags. There were instructions on the bags as to how many square feet of pond bottom 45 pounds would cover. I calculated the square footage of the lake and ordered, at my cost, the Bentonite.

Once the Bentonite arrived, I got a row boat, lots of rope and two young guys from my office who assisted me. Each of the guys stood on opposite sides of the lake, and we ran the ropes through the oar locks. That allowed them to pull the boat back and forth across the lake. I was stationed in the boat with the bags of Bentonite, which I poured into the water as the boat was being pulled back and forth over the lake. Jule Spach was a witness to this “performance” and can vouch for its accuracy.

My wife, Tog and I moved into a cottage in 2017.
