TVCUCCellular NetworkA cellular network is a two-way radio network distributed over land through cells where each cell includes a fixed location transceiver known as base station. The last link in the network is wireless. These cells together provide radio coverage over larger geographical areas. User equipment such as mobile phones, is therefore able to communicate even if the equipment is moving through cells during transmission. This is called a hand-off.

TVCUCU. S. Carrier Network Differences

CARRIER NETWORK 3G BANDS 3G FREQUENCIES 4G LTE BANDS 4G LTE FREQUENCIES

US CELLULAR CDMA 0, 1 850, 1900 5, 12 850, 700 ab

AT&T and T-Mobile use 3G GSM technology while Verizon and Sprint the CDMA technology. None of the 4 use the same 4G LTE Bands as primary. These technologies and frequencies are not compatible with each other.

This is why you can’t use a Verizon phone on an AT&T network (or vice versa)

TVCUCWi-Fi

Wi-Fi is the name of a popular wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide wireless high-speed Internet and network connections. A common misconception is that the term Wi-Fi is short for "wireless fidelity," however this is not the case. Wi-Fi is simply a trademarked phrase that means IEEE 802.11x.

Why do I care about this? Exactly the same technology as used with your PC. Faster than 4G cellular network. Probably free to use on your mobile device. No data plan needed. Phone can create a “wireless hotspot” to connect cellular data

network to other wireless devices

Page 21: Cell Phone and Tablet 101 Presentation

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

TVCUCWhat is the difference between Wi-Fi and Cellular data?

Wi-Fi only works within the limited range of a Wi-Fi network you are connected to.

With a Cellular Wireless Data Plan you can access the internet without Wi-Fi….using your phone data plan ($$).

Can I make free calls with Wi-Fi?

With Wi-Fi Calling, you can place a phone call if you have Wi-Fi connected.o To use Wi-Fi Calling, you need a later model phone on a supported carrier

network. This may be useful if you have a weak signal at home.

You can use apps like Skype, FaceTime, Whatsapp, etc. to make phone calls/video chat over Wi-Fi. This works well on a tablet that doesn’t have a cellular radio…..or an old cell phone that doesn’t have a SIM card.

TVCUCA Few Comments about Wi-Fi Security in PublicWhen you have a mobile device it’s tempting to connect anytime, anywhere using the nearest open Wi-Fi network rather than eat up your data plan. However, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network or hotspot can compromise your mobile security and put your information at risk.

Some suggestions

Only do online banking and shopping using a known secure network.

Avoid using communication apps, such as for free phone calls, instant messaging etc. unless you know the network you’re using is secure.

Use strong passwords for all your online accounts and change them often.

Use a Mobile Security app to protect your device. Many free choices available

There are mobile Virtual Private Network (VPN) apps that will protect your data. Check your app store for more info.

TVCUCBluetooth

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances (typically 30-300 feet) using the 2.4GHz band and is sometimes referred to as IEEE 802.15.1

Why do I care about Bluetooth?

Permits you to connect to other wireless devices such as headphones, speakers, printers, your car.

Will be instrumental in connecting many different devices in the “smart home” in the future

TVCUCNear-Field Communication aka NFCNear-field communication (NFC) is a set of communication protocols that enable two electronic devices, one of which is usually a smartphone, to establish communication by bringing them within 4 cm of each other.

Why do I care about NFC? NFC devices are used in contactless payment systems, similar to those

used in credit cards and electronic ticket smartcards and allow mobile payment to replace/supplement these systems.o Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay…etc

NFC is used for for sharing contacts, photos, videos or files. NFC-enabled devices can act as electronic identity

documents and keycards.

Page 26: Cell Phone and Tablet 101 Presentation

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

TVCUCGlobal Positioning System aka GPS

The GPS (Global Positioning System) is a "constellation" of approximately 30 well-spaced satellites that orbit the Earth and make it possible for people with ground receivers to pinpoint their geographic location. The location accuracy is anywhere from 100 to 10 meters for most equipment.

Why do I care about GPS? GPS is the foundation for your device’s Location Services

o Radar and weather at your current locationo Maps, directions, location trackingo Emergency notificationso Restaurant finders, etc.

Page 27: Cell Phone and Tablet 101 Presentation

TVCUCSubscriber Identity Module aka SIM card

A SIM card, also known as a subscriber identity module, is a smart card that stores data for cellular telephone subscribers. Such data includes user identity, location and phone number, network authorization data, personal security keys, contact lists and stored text messages. Security features include authentication and encryption to protect data and prevent eavesdropping.

Why do I care about this? This is your phone/tablet’s ID and is essential for operation The SIM card is part of the lock to a specific carrier. Samsung and Apple are working on a “soft SIM” that is not

removable aka eSIM.

TVCUCData PlansA Data Plan is part of the service that mobile operators offer to give you connectivity anywhere under the sky. It is called a Data Plan because, in contrast to the traditional 2G/3G GSM/CDMA service which offers voice and simple text transmission only, it offers a connection to the Internet, where multimedia resources can be accessed.

A Data Plan involves getting you connected to a 3G, 4G or LTE network to access the internet.

Page 29: Cell Phone and Tablet 101 Presentation

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

TVCUCChoosing a Data Plan is VERY Complicated

Things to consider when choosing a Data Plan

How many phone calls? Text messages?

How many lines do you need?

Extra devices, like tablets

How much Data Plan do you need?

Contract/no contract

Pre-Paid/Post-Paid

Page 30: Cell Phone and Tablet 101 Presentation

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

TVCUCSo What’s Your Plan for Smart Phone Data

Reliability is KEY….so get a phone that works in your home/on the

road….and this varies with different homes/carrier

Look at Coverage Maps—3G , 4G, or 4 G LTE

What data speed do you want (need)?

Phone (device) selection.

Features—talk, text, & data (convenience apps)

Plans for family members— or multiple devices (tablet, etc.)

Cost of Phone, plan, & avoid DATA overages

o No Overage Plans are now available. They throttle your speed after you hit a cap

Page 31: Cell Phone and Tablet 101 Presentation

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

TVCUCSo What’s Your Plan for Smart Phone Data

Enough Data Coverage so you do NOT experience overages in data use……EXPENSIVE.

How much data do you need….it DEPENDS on HOW and WHEREyou use your smart phone.

o Music streaming

o Video streaming

Try to always use Wi-Fi when it is available

o Doesn’t count against your data plan. Essentially it is free

o Can be MUCH faster download/upload speeds

Page 32: Cell Phone and Tablet 101 Presentation

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

TVCUCData Cost for Streaming Music

Lower quality streams obviously use way less data. So what does that mean in terms of your data plan? o 320 kbps rate translates to 2.40 MB per minute of audio or 115.2 MB per

hour.

So if you were to stream music for an entire eight hour work day, you'd burn through nearly 1 GB.

Link about Pandora, Google, Spotifyhttp://gizmodo.com/how-much-data-does-your-streaming-music-app-eat-up-1649466894

Page 33: Cell Phone and Tablet 101 Presentation

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

Tellico Village Computer Users Club

TVCUCData Cost for Streaming Video

Anytime you stream a higher quality video, you’re going to chew through more of your data. Higher quality videos use more data because they’re comprised of more pixels, which are what give you that crystal clear picture on your screen.

Just how much more data are we talking about? According to Netflix, using their “High” data1 usage setting runs through:o 3 GB per hour when streaming High Definition (HD) videos and

o 7 GB per hour for Ultra HD.

o The “Medium” setting only uses 0.7 GB per hour for a Standard Definition (SD) video.

TVCUCChoosing a Data Plan is VERY Complicated

Plans change frequently. Impossible to keep up.o There are “deals” and promotions going ALL THE TIME

Very difficult to compare pricing between competitors

Technology keeps changing/improving

Lots of marketing “hype”o Fudging the facts

o Short term promotional deals

o Significant amount of fine print in the offers

The two are very much alike and equally easy to use. There are some feature differences, but they are very similar.

There are very few apps written today that are exclusive to one platform or the other, so app choice is probably not going to be a factor in your decision.

If you are already in the Apple ecosystem, then the iPhone is probably a better choice.

The Android offers more customization potential and is slightly more favorable to x-86PC users because you can see your file system easier and is organized a bit more like an x-86 PC.

Bottom Line: Both are fine.

TVCUCThings to Consider When Choosing a Smartphone

Costo Can be “free” with 2yr+ contract. (Not really Free)

o Trend seems to be toward buying the phone separately and getting data contract. That is the way most of the rest of the world works.─ 30 month contract is typical. They try to get it down to $25/month or less ballpark

o Last year’s model still works very well…..

o Used phones will still work on most networks….IF it on the same carrier

Sizeo Where will you carry it?

o How good is your eyesight?

TVCUCMore Things to Consider….

Water resistant?

Memory size, ability to add more memory

Where can you get support?

Locked or Unlocked?

Do some online research to see what others think of the phone. Many good sources.
