Small Particles

• Atoms: Our basic smallest unit or tiny particle.

Formless and Empty

The atoms nucleus in where most of the mass (what we are made of) resides in the atom and is hundred thousand billionth of the atom’s volume.

Therefore most of the atom 99.9…. % empty space. Since everything is made of atoms including you, what we see is mostly invisible empty space.

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Gen 1:2

The Atom’s Size

6

To see an atom with you have to shrink down your eye to a billionth of an inch (1/1,000,000,000).

9.1 million, trillion, trillion oranges to fill the volume of the earth.

Page 7: CEDAR Physical Science Module 1

Drop of Water

7

To count the atoms in a drop of water require every human on earth (6 billion people) counting one atom per second for twenty thousand years.

6 billion people

= 22,009 years

Page 8: CEDAR Physical Science Module 1

Atoms and the Human Body

8

The human body contains 1028 atoms ( 1 followed by 28 zeroes)The universe has the 1024 stars. We have more atoms in our bodies than stars in the universe.

Page 9: CEDAR Physical Science Module 1

What are you any way!

The human body’s atoms are 90 % replaced every year and in five years 99.9 % of the atoms of been turned over.

In one hour one trillion, trillion of your atoms have been exchanged.

Conclusion: Your are not things but are really invisible processes.

Elements

• Kinds of Atoms• There are currently 116 • The Periodic Table of Elements keeps them

organized

Iron

Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah. Gen 4:22 .NIV

Molecules and Compounds

• Molecules are three dimensional units where atoms are bonded together a special way. They usually draw them.

• Compounds are the way the elements combine is set ratio. Chemical Formulas are usually written.

Compounds

• Aluminum nitride – AlN • Aluminum oxide – Al2O3

• Aluminum chloride – AlCl3

• Aluminum fluoride – AlF3

• Aluminum hydroxide – Al(OH)3

Metric System Basic Units

• Mass = gram (g)• Distance = meter (m)• Volume = liter (L)• Time = second (s)Prefixes

micro (u) = .000 0001 Mega (M)= 1,000,000milli (m) = .001 kilo (k) = 1,000deci (d) = .01 hecta (H)= 100

deca (D) = 1016

Metric System Basic Units• Mass = gram (g) Weight = Newton (N)• Distance = meter (m)• Volume = liter (L)• Time = second (s)Prefixes

micro (u) = .000 0001 Mega (M)= 1,000,000milli (m) = .001 kilo (k) = 1,000centi (c) = .01 hecta (H)= 100deci (d) = .1 deca (D) = 10

English Units

• 12 inches = 1 foot• 3 feet = 1 yard• 5280 feet = 1 mile• 8 oz. = 1 cup• 2 cups = 1 pint• 2 pints = 1 quart• 4 quarts = I gallon

19

• Weight = lbs• Distance = feet (ft)• Volume = gallon (gal)• Time = seconds

Page 20: CEDAR Physical Science Module 1

Conversion Units

• 1 inch = 2.54 cm• 1 slug = 14.59 kg• 1 gallon = 3.76 L

• 1 kilogram = 2.2 lbs

20

Page 21: CEDAR Physical Science Module 1

FactorLabel Method

• Arrange the equivalents so that they will cancel units of what is given and leaving units you need.

• 2.2 lbs = 1 kg• 2.2 lbs = 1 or

1 kg1 kg = 12.2 lbs

Page 22: CEDAR Physical Science Module 1

Example: Factor Label Method

2200 pounds x 1 kg = 1000 kg 1 car 2.2 pounds 1 car

1 000 kg x 1 000 grams = 1 000 000 grams1 car 1 Kg 1 car

Example: A car has a weight of about 2200 lbs. How many kilograms would that be equivalent too? How many grams?

Increasing Concentration

• Increasing concentration makes the chemical go faster.

• Decreasing concentration makes the chemical reaction go slower.

Video that demonstrates how concentration affects a chemical's behavior
