Successful Seed Funding

Two CECS affiliated professors, Mohammed Al Faruque and Zoran Nenadic are among eight winners of a second round of seed funding for single and multi-investigator research projects announced this season. The overall goal of the Seed Funding Program is to stimulate successful extramural research proposals by investing in research goals that will directly lead to the submission of an external grant proposal. There were a total of 233 applicants from nearly all disciplines of research here at UCI. Electrical engineering and computer science Professor Mohammad Al Faruque, pictured left, was awarded $37,900 for his proposal, “Critical Infrastructure Forensics” which detail the detection and prevention of cyber-attacks in 3-D printers by analyzing acoustic, electromagnetic and thermal signals emitted by the printers. Biomedical engineering Associate Professor Zoran Nenadic, pictured right, received $50,000 for his proposal on “An Implantable Brain-Computer Interface System for Restoring Lower Extremity Movement and Sensation after Neural Injuries”.

SCOPES 2016

Sujit Rokka Chhetri is a second year PhD student in Computer Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, UCI. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication from the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, Tribhuvan University located in Nepal, the top engineering school in Nepal. As an undergraduate, his research interest involved digital signal processing and embedded systems. This led him to complete his thesis project titled “Implementation of audio processor in FPGA”, where he designed digital signal processing algorithms to produce different acoustic effects such as echo, distortion, phase shift, etc. and implemented them in FPGA using Verilog.

After his graduation, he worked as a teaching assistant for the undergraduate course “Embedded System Design”, while co-partnering to launch his startup company “Riemcom SCCS”. He was responsible for design, testing, and verification of real

time embedded system in the start-up company. He joined UCI in the Fall 2014 and is currently working in the Advanced Integrated Cyber Physical Systems (AICPS) Lab as a graduate student researcher under the guidance of his advisor, Professor Mohammad Al Faruque. His current research interest lies in the security of cyber-physical systems, specifically in security of process chain of manufacturing systems. He is interested in leveraging the side-channel analog emissions to improve the security as well as improve the quality of the next generation smart manufacturing systems.

CECS Lectures and Seminars

On April 22nd, Professor Mohammad Al Faruque hosted the CECS Distinguished Lecture with distinguished scholar and professor, Massimo Poncino from the Polytechnic University of Turin (Politecnico di Torino), Italy. His lecture was titled “Towards Computer-Aided Design of Electrical Energy Systems: Challenges and Solutions”.

Professor Poncino discussed the fundamental concepts towards a first attempt in applying EDA design methodologies that are widely used for electronics systems design to the case of the design of electrical energy systems (EES). The talk analyzes in deeper details the issue of representation, modeling, and simulation of EESs, tasks that naturally precede synthesis and optimization in a typical design flow.

Professor Massimo Poncino is Full Professor of Computing Systems at Polytechnic University of Turin. He holds a Dr. Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering (1989) and a PhD degree in Computer Engineering, both from Polytechnic University of Turin (1993).

His research interests include the design automation of digital systems, with emphasis on low-power embedded systems, modeling and the simulation of systems-on-chip, and automatic synthesis of digital systems.

Massimo Poncino has served as member of Technical Program Committee of more than 50 IEEE and ACM conferences. He was the Technical Program Chair of the 2011 IEEE/ACM Symposium on Low-Power Electronics and Design and General co-Chair for the same conference in 2012. He has served in the Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on CAD from 2006 to 2011, and is currently serving in the Editorial Board of IEEE Design & Test and ACM Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems (TODAES).Prof. Poncino is a Senior Member of IEEE, member of the ACM SIGDA Low-Power Technical Committee, and a Member the Circuit and Systems Society.

CECS Seminar—Mingoo Seok

Professor Mingoo Seok from Columbia University, New York gave a talk titled “Adaptive Design: Tackling Variability Challenges in VLSI Circuits” on April 22nd. He was hosted by Professor Payam Heydari and in his seminar, he discussed the vari-ability challenges in VLSI systems and our recent research efforts on variation-adaptive design tech-niques.

Professor Seok presented (1) a low-overhead, in-situ, within-a-cycle timing-error detection and cor-rection technique that can operate at near/sub-threshold voltage, (2) ultra-compact thermal sen-sor circuits enabling 10-100X denser on-chip thermal sensing, (3) self-testing circuits and frame-works for in-field & in-situ aging monitoring in pipeline and SRAM register files along with several test chip measurement results.

Mingoo Seok is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia Uni-versity. He received the BS (with summa cum laude) in electrical engineering from Seoul National University, South Korea, in 2005, and the MS and PhD degree from University of Michigan in 2007 and 2011, respectively, all in electrical engineering. He was a member of technical staff in Texas In-struments, Dallas in 2011. He joined Columbia University in 2012. His research interests are various aspects of computing systems, including ultra-low-power computing systems, computing systems for machine learning, adaptive circuits and architecture, and non-conventional computing systems.

He received 1999 Distinguished Undergraduate Scholarship from the Korea Foundation for Ad-vanced Studies, 2005 Doctoral Fellowship from the same organization, and 2008 Rackham Pre-Doctoral Fellowship from University of Michigan. He also won 2009 AMD/CICC Scholarship Award for pico-watt voltage reference work and 2009 DAC/ISSCC Design Contest for the 35pW sensor platform design. He won 2015 NSF CAREER award. He has been serving as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I since 2013, and IEEE Transactions on VLSI Systems since 2015.
