PRESENTATION

Objectives

The objectives of the activities proposed in this document are the following:

– Guide students in choosing their ideas in order to help them understand the writing process.

– Work on sentence structure.

– Enrich vocabulary.

– Improve spelling of common words.

– Develop grammatical awareness: word classes, subject-verb agreement, pronounagreement, etc.

– Develop autonomy and self-confidence in a reassuring environment through astructured approach.

– Serve as a reference for other writing tasks.

Suggested Approach

Since the proposed activities are based on a modelling approach, we suggest that theteacher present the activities as follows:

– Introduce the activity by providing examples, context, specific goals and any other usefulinformation.

– Read the first sentence of the text up to the first blank (number 1).

– Explain the characteristics of the word to be filled in.

– Brainstorm with students to find as many answers as possible.

– Ask students to choose a word or words from those proposed in the brainstormingexercise. The list of words gathered during the brainstorm should be available on theboard.

– Encourage students to use a thesaurus.

– Ask students to write their word(s) on the corresponding line.

– Repeat the same process for the rest of the text.

– Have students read their text to the class. This step aims to develop self-confidence andmotivation to write. In doing so, students become aware that everyone is able to write,even those who experience difficulties.

– Encourage students to use their work as a reference for other creative writing activities.

Note:

When the word “verb” is shown in the text, students can choose either an action or a state verb.However, if the word “action” is indicated, they should choose a verb that involves a physicalaction.

THE EXQUISITE CORPSE

Exquisite Corpse is a collective game in which players have to writesentences based on words written by other players. The difficulty of thegame resides in the fact that the current contributing player is unawareof what others have written before him. ¨The exquisite corpse will drink the newwine,¨is one of the first sentences coined by the surrealists who invented this game.(Le Petit Larousse, 2007)

Groups of 2 to 30 students can play this version of the writing situation, which is anadaptation of the original game. Students work on several grammatical constituents(determiners, nouns, adjectives, verbs, complements and adverbs). This activity requires agreat deal of attention and patience on the part of the students, but the result will surelyplease the great majority of them.

For this activity you will need six baskets to collect the students’ words. One basket shouldbe used for each of the following categories: 1) determiners; 2) adjectives; 3) common nouns;4) actions; 5) adverbs; 6) complement. You will also need 29 small cards per student, eachcorresponding to one of the six categories. It is important to use a different colour for eachcategory.

Explain to the students that they will have to write words and phrases that will be used byother students.

Present the answer sheet but do not give it to students yet. Give them cards for one of thecategory. Write the numbers of the category on the board and have students transcribe eachone on to a card. Have them brainstorm to find words for the category. It is important that theirsix choices all differ. Repeat this process for each of the six categories:

- Four cards for the complements category with numbers (1), (7), (14) and (20). Encourageyour students to answer questions such as where, when, how, why and with whom.

- Five cards for the determiners category with the numbers (2), (8), (15), (21) and (24).

- Five cards for the adjectives category with the numbers (3), (9), (10), (22) and (25).

- Five cards for the common nouns category with the numbers (4), (11), (16), (23) and (26).Commons nouns should refer to people, animals or objects, and should be singular.

- Five cards for the actions category with the numbers (5), (12), (17), (18) and (27). Verbsshould be in the present tense, 3rd person singular.

- Five cards for the adverbs category with the numbers (6), (13), (19), (28) and (29).

Distribute the answer sheet. Each student then draws the amount of cards of the firstcategory and then enters the answers on his/her sheet. Do the same for each of the fourother categories. Ask students to make the necessary corrections. Finally, invite thestudents to share their text.
