We are expecting an exciting year! Our goal is to guide your child so that he

or she finds success.

No child will be allowed to deprive another child of their education.

That every child feels like they are the “Star of the Show!”

All about Ms. Marlowe…• Graduated high school from East Bladen High

School.

• Completed my Bachelor and Masters work at East Carolina University

• This is my third year teaching at the Columbus Charter School and I am SOOOO EXCITED to be in the 5th grade again this year!!

• I am very family oriented and have a close relationship with my parents, siblings and my nieces and nephew.

Drop-off & Pick-upGates open at 7:30 am, before school care begins at 6:45 am. Please have all students in the classroom before 8:00 am.

The gate will close promptly at 8:00 am

If you arrive or are still in line at 8:00 am, you must go in through the office and sign your child in.

5th grade will release at 3:15 pm

Daycare begins at 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Smoke-free campus

UniformsBOYS

Belts required, shirts tucked in

No jewelry, except watches

Hair must be off the collar and not below the ears (no excessive or radical haircuts)

GIRLS

Jumpers, skorts and skirts need to be KNEE LENGTH or longer

The mesh Polo dress in hunter green is allowed.

Shoes must be closed toe/closed heel (no crocs or clogs)

Jewelry – earrings must be studs or no bigger than ½ inch

Socks/Tights must be white or school green

Monday- Thursday: 10-15 Math problems from the

Written Practice portion of the day’s lesson.

New Reading Program 3rd-6th

Basal Reading Program- Journeys

Reading fluency and comprehension, Spelling and Writing component that all tie together

each day.

Reading textbook available online at_________

Assessment EVERY five days unless otherwise notified in all three areas.

Additional Reading Homework

Beginning Week 1

Students will chose an appropriate reading level book from my library or the school library.

The student will have two weeks to read the book and complete a book report or presentation/project.

We will repeat this process every two weeks.

Social Studies• We will begin the year learning the 50 states

and capitals.

• Our main focus in Social Studies this year are the states and capitals, The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, Judiciary process and the U.S. Presidents.

This year we will study:

•Biomes, Ecosystems, The Food chain•Landforms, Erosion, Weathering•Weather•Forces and Motion

There is also an EOG in this area.

Weekly Newsletter

A 5th grade newsletter and behavior log will go home every week and will be emailed to you.

The newsletter will include:• Upcoming school events• Important class information• Important dates• Behavior log on the reverse side

NOTE: Parents are required to sign and return this log daily.

Lunch and SnacksYour child needs to bring a healthy snack and lunch with them each day.

Fridays are HOT LUNCH. Send $3 in a zip lock baggie (NAME ON THE BAG) on or before Wednesday for this lunch.

A parent volunteer sheet is on the table by the door for you to sign up to deliver hot lunch. Our class is responsible for the 2nd Nine Weeks.

Classroom OrganizationStudent desks should always be neat and tidy. That means no papers hanging out or crammed into the desk.

Bookbags belong on the student’s assigned hook and not by their desk.

If you see trash on the floor, please pick it up.

Clean your desk off with a sanitary wipe after snack and lunch.

We are all responsible for keeping our room looking the best that it can.

Remember your bathroom etiquette and make sure we keep them clean and sanitary.

We will have the following class parties this year:

Thanksgiving Feast

Christmas Party

Valentine’s Day Party

Birthday parties

We will need parent volunteers to organize these events. The sign up sheet is on the table by the front door.

Your help is crucial to our success.

• Parents and volunteers are always welcome in our classroom.

• All visitors must sign in at the office and obtain a pass.

• Parents/drivers for field trips.

• A huge thank you to all parents and the many contributions you will make to our class this year. Your help is key to our success.

Attendance• Please have your child at school and on

time each day. Attendance is crucial to our work.

• Provide a note upon return after an absence with an explanation of the absence.

• 1 day absent/1 day to make up missed work.

• After 15 days of absences, your child will automatically be retained. It is out of our hands and turned over to the board of trustees.

• Attendance is extremely important!

Field Trips

We are planning several exciting activities, fieldtrips and learning opportunities for our students.

Most of the activities will be related to our Science curriculum.
