Starting Point The project was conceived when the club became more forward thinking and when looking at how the facilities supported the aged community with a venue for their twice weekly Bingo session after the local British Legion had to close. It was identified that there was a lack of premises within the area that were available to support community groups. To ensure the long jeopardy of our club we should engage further with the community were mutual support would be beneficial. To do this we would need to look at how our aging facility could be better utilized, become more cost effective and a better environment for groups to use. One of the main problems was that the building was leaking energy through defective windows and lack of insulation. Energy efficient and carbon reductions measures was felt was the only way forward.

Community Information Our target audience is primarily the burgh of Macduff which is a designated remote rural community with a population of around 7,500. It is an aging community with a rising percentage of unemployment but is one of the lowest waged economies in Scotland. We have a small primary school with around 450 youngsters. We are situated on the shores of the Moray Firth / North Sea and suffer greatly from winter storms and salt erosion. Royal Tarlair Golf Club currently has 370 members from playing through to social members, and an age range of 5 through to 86 years old. Our current community use sees on average 630 people access the facility per month for a range of activities from fundraising through to meetings. Around 75% of the population travel between 5 and 50 miles each day to work and oil related personnel travelling a lot further. Although there is less deprivation than in some areas of Aberdeenshire, Macduff is not an affluent community severely crippled with the demise of the fishing industry which in turn impacted on numerous related local firms and suppliers We attracted more residents / members especially during the long dark nights of winter to access our facility and continue to promote the carbon reduction message into the mix, we continue to inform the residents who are most at risk and who will have most to benefit from our project

Club Background RTGC was formed in June 1926 and given its 'Royal' designation a year later. We are one of only sixty one clubs worldwide to have this title. In 2011 the club adopted a more community based mind-set and changed our constitution to adopt an open membership which lifted barriers allowing anyone in the community to apply for and receive one of the four membership categories at the club. We are a non-profit organisation with a management committee of eight. The 2011 AGM produced an injection of new office bearers who wanted to see the club develop through transparency and community involvement, deciding to look at ways which would see areas where people with expertise would be approached to feed new ideas into the main committee for debate and development. We quickly set up three sub groups, they are chaired by one of the office bearers but consist solely of non Committee members, and this allows us to be more engaged with our users and gives them a channel of input on club matters. A cross section of our management committee sees us with expertise in the right areas, Stand By Ships Captain with extensive H & S experience, a marketing manager, Development Grants and Projects Consultant involved with of a local Sports and community groups, Catering manager involved in the offshore industry, building engineer, Architect, Engineer and two retired business people. Our sub groups consist of a barrister, bank manager, retired joiner, builder, 2 offshore electricians, Retired Primary School Headmistress, Golf Driving Range manager, two retired transport managers and three representatives from the social members. We also have an ideas box which all the users can access to give their input. We completed our first goal in our renewable scheme in 2015, with the erection of 2 small turbines this will allow the club some financial comfort for the foreseeable future and takes us a step closer to finance Solar and Biomass energy projects

Headline Achievements Through the CCF project, Royal Tarlair Golf Club members have grasped the importance of reducing carbon emissions and are fully behind the club’s drive to get the required information out to the wider community on how to lower their overall carbon footprint both in the home and on the road. Having successfully reduced the premises CO2e by 16.08597 tonnes, 24% with the installation of the energy efficient measures of Window, Doors, LED Lighting, and the insulating walls and ceiling spaces. The benefits seen over a short space of time, together with the lessons and experience gained will allow us to continue improving and reducing our output. The club has become a welcoming facility with an immediate feel good factor. An important goal for the club was to increase their support to community groups and this has seen a raised usage of 24% over the last year, exceeding any expectations and looks set to continue to rise. Car sharing was quickly embraced by our social section for their twice weekly Bingo session, with each patron traveling an average of 3.5 miles. The scheme was a great success and remained constantly reduced from the start of the project not only saving CO2e by 24% but forming firm friendships and further support for potentially vulnerable OAP’s.

Activities

A large part of the funding received from CCF was to allow us to reduce the carbon footprint of the facilities. To enable us to achieve these reductions a substantial part of our project was to install energy efficient measurers to our facilities and this work took up the majority of 2014, included within these works were; Double Glazed Windows Insulation to the Wall Cavities and Ceiling Spaces Low Energy LED lighting Lighting sensors to short use areas Overhaul and draft proof fascia * Data available within supporting information Section

Whilst the building works formed a large part of the fund, to support the community further a number of key events were set in place. This allowed us to actively promote the importance of our project to our members and the wider community. These were essential in keeping the message of carbon reduction at the forefront of our audience Information Evenings Displays & information boards Leaflets & advice sheets Engaging the wider community

At the start of the project in 2014 members were invited to an information evening where the projects aims and goals were explained. This gave the members an introduction to carbon reductions and what it would mean to them and how they could benefit from supporting and taking part. During the course of the project a further 5 meeting took place, allowing us to update on the benefits that club were gaining from the improvements which had taken place. It also gave us a platform to raise further awareness and to sign up home owners on to our saving scheme. A further benefit from the meeting was the feedback from the membership and ideas on further information and advice that could be given. After support and information was gleaned from HES, a display board was setup within the entrance to the clubhouse, at this time we made available leaflets and sign-up sheets to allow members to start making changes within their own homes. Throughout the project the display information was regularly changed and included; Tips on simple energy saving techniques How changes could save them money Better driving skills As the information board was in such a prominent position it was not only visible to members but ensured that everyone who entered the facility were able to take advantage of the information provided, this including, golfers from throughout Scotland and aboard, members of community groups using the facilities and attending functions. HES provided us with a number of leaflets/handouts which we made up into information packs these included sign-up sheets. This allowed us to not only promote energy saving techniques but to promote HES who could provide further support and information to home owners seeking more in-depth and specialist advice and assistance. Only promoting the scheme within the club, despite the amount of visitors through the premises, limited our target audience and we felt that we needed to engage further with the community. To this we had to find further outlets to promote our scheme. The first step to this was to use our annual gala day as a stepping stone, this event draws in a wide range people who had no connection to the club. HES were extremely helpful during this event and provided us with trained staff and a driving simulator which allowed participants to learn skills to save on carbon emissions whilst driving an important tool for our rural community. With the success of the gala day actively promoting the scheme was well underway, however we had to ensure that this continued to be the case, we took the opportunity to have a stand at the local Primary schools health evening and used this to push car sharing and basic energy saving techniques, we also ensured the information packs for home owners scheme were made available. Another outside event that our mobile display information was of benefit was held to by the local tourist association, this allowed us to promote carbon reduction methods and savings to local business owners. We also managed to secure display space within another local business, this allowed us to sign up homeowners to our energy saving scheme from other areas of the community

Outcomes

Outcome Met or exceeded

CO2e - Club Facility Carbon Output Reduction Reduce Facilities emissions by 12.51 tones, to reach this target it became apparent the numbers and opening hours would need to remain as constant as possible, but with the installed improvements usage was increased and to look at the full picture of reductions footfall needs to be taken into consideration and does not allow for a clear comparison picture. Gas reduction saw the best results proving that the building was indeed much more energy efficient, the new windows reduced that drafts within the building and together will the insulation to the walls and roof spaces, retaining heat within the building and it was very noticeable that the temperature within the building was at a much more acceptable level. After the initial installation it was noticed that members would check the radiators to see if the heating was on and were generally shocked that the radiators were stone cold.

* Data available within supporting information Section

The electric usage also seen reduction with the facility now being completely changed over to LED / low energy lighting units, this area was impacted by the increased footfall and the much needed catering services being provided, where only 2 double and one single fridge was running in previous years, we had to deal with a further 3 upright freezers and 2 fridges running during the high season, these units are aged and are not the most energy efficient. Plans are in plan to replace when funds allow. The kitchen services also added pressure with the usual appliances now being used for 50% of the week, which included dish washer cookers and Bain Marie. The bar was also under more pressures with their dish washer and ice machines required far more often during busier periods. When further analyses was done to the electrical usage, 2014 saw a larger use than normal and the periods most affected by this February to June was during the installation of the Windows and Insulations. Further attributed to this was that alternative areas of the clubhouse were being used with electrical heating sources in place, and Tradesmen were also draining electrical supplies with power tools.

* Data available within supporting information Section Pulling together the CO2e for all areas that could be converted, it was encouraging to see that over the two years of the project the club had seen a decrease to the carbon footprint of the facility of 16.08597, even with the increase in footfall to the building.

Community - Car Sharing Proved to be a very successful intuitive for our Bingo section who wholeheartedly embraced the scheme from the onset. By encouraging them to travel with other members of the group and to work in a Rota so that car owners could take turns to travel to the regular bingo session. Not only did the scheme take the pressure off the limited parking facilities, it allowed patrons to socially interact with others within the section, forming further friendship which is important for the OAPs . This scheme has continued to remain constant throughout the project and looks set to be an integral resource to the participants. Whilst this section falls within the Community part of our project, it can also be attributed to reduced CO2e levels

Community - Juniors The club are fortunate to have a proactive Junior convener who is always on hand to support our Junior section. She was instrumental in helping us to encourage our Juniors to walk or cycle to the club, which was also supported by their parents. To allow this section of our project to come to fruition we had ensure that storage provisions were available to the children which allowed them to leave golfing equipment and apparel at the club, this in turn allowed them exit the school bus at the nearest stop to the clubhouse. Rather than having the younger juniors walk home after their game, parents took it in turns to collect and drop off children. This was due to parental concerns for the younger children crossing the busy main road adjacent to our facility We later cleared a section of lockers for the junior section to ensure that better and secure storage was available. This section of lockers are kept solely for Juniors and will never be allocated to adults should demand require.

Outcome Partially Delivered

CO2e - Target 30 households At the start of the project households were given the option of working solely with the club and the option to have their details forwarded to HES for more in-depth assistance. Up take was slow however, it was found that word of mouth from reduction in energy bills proved to be the best marketing tool to encourage further home owner participation. Monitoring packs were made up at the start of the project which included, energy monitor, timers and radiator reflector, also included was instructions and tips. Home owners where asked to monitor electrical/ gas usage for the first week or two without making any changes before being given the packs to allow baseline levels to recorded. Participants did see savings after using basic tips and changing some of their daily routines, over the 29 households which took part an annual saving of 10.472 tonnes of CO2e is expected

2 Home owners installed new boilers one after it was condemned which meant that they were unable to seek funding or assistance through the green-deal intuitive. The other home owner had installed the new boiler and had not said they were slightly disappointed that they had also missed out on the funding, however they had used and wanted to use a local installer which would have also excluded them from the funding A further homeowner has installed new windows and doors, with another planning this improvement by the end of the year. The majority of homeowner in the area had previously benefited from Cavity wall insulation and Roof insulation before the start of our project which 60% of had been delivered via SCARF. These home owner had already seen a reduction in heating costs from these measurers. The local authority have recently, within the last few months started installing cavity wall insulation to their properties, which will see a couple of our homeowners within our scheme have this installed. Simply driving information was also provided to the home owners, with Macduff being an extremely rural location and households forced to travel for their everyday needs up to 25/35 miles

Community - Led lighting Having installed LED low energy lighting to all areas of the clubhouse, sensors were installed to low usage areas, which were targeted as they had frequent usage but for short periods of time, and generally saw lights being left on for most of the day. It was found after the first areas installation had been completed some members through force of habit would switch the light off leaving the sensors redundant and ineffective. To solve this problem, when the Locker areas were completed our electrician had the foresight to disconnect light switches to ensure that the full potential was meet

Unexpected Outcome

Community -Water Shaving At the start of the project this looked to be one of the simplest areas to achieve a reduction, however, by the end of the project it had proven to a project in its own rights. Non concussive taps were installed but due to the water pressure within the property the water flow was a mere trickle, these were adjusted on serval occasions to find an ideal working pressure but remained to be disappointing. On a number of occasion taps had stuck on and staff had to be vigilant at closing times to ensure that this was not the case. Also installed were hydro dams to reduce usage in our toilets and adjustments were made to the urinals flow, 2 further toilet provision had also been installed including a dedicated disabled room. Despite all the measure taken we were not seeing results, in fact the water usage continued to rise until it reached quite alarming levels at this point we took investigatory action to find where the problem lay. Through the use of sonar equipment we discovered a leak under our carpark which has now been repaired and the levels of water usage will required to be worked on further with more monitoring required. It is uncertain if the failed joint which caused the leak many have been a small leak for a long period before the joint finally failed. While investigation of the leak took place, close monitoring was made on our water usage to determine the amount of leakage, the water to building was shut off during the night and it was established that 6 units of water was leaking over each 24 hour period. To allow comparison of usage to be made the recordings have been adjusted by this amount over the effected period of 6

months. Taking this and footfall patterns into account, the rise in water usage would appear to be at a reasonable level

* Data available within supporting information Section

Learning & Reflection Time was spent looking at the footfall patterns within the clubhouse to see why reductions levels were not at the levels expected. This showed some very interesting results and it was apparent that we had become a victim of our own success, with the clubhouse having become a much warmer and welcoming venue, we were seeing a rise in use from local community groups and larger numbers attending golf events. Thus impacting on both our electric through being open for longer periods and our water with the introductions of regular catering facilities, further pressures on bar services and toilet provisions. On the positive side the gas/heating had a significant reduction as this was required less due to the heat retention within the clubhouse with the windows, doors and insulation

* Data available within supporting information Section Home Energy Scotland were instrumental with supporting information and advice when setting up our home owners saving scheme. At the start of the project two of their representatives were kind enough to come and meet with us at the club, which was a great introduction to their services and how we could work together. They were also very helpful in providing lots of leaflets and tips, they also helped us to set up data protection to allow us to pass home owners onto them. If we ever struggled to find required information they will always obliging and were always able to direct us in the right direction. The contractors that we used during our project were on the whole from the local area and they were very helpful and forthcoming with advice and ideas on where we could find further improvements. They were always happy to answers question no matter how silly they might have been and it was very helpful to gain professionals advice which could be transferred on to homeowners.

One of the most frustrating areas was trying to set up heating timers to allow maximum effect but to also allow reduction in usage. It at times felt like just when we had struck ideal levels and the weather would change and we would be back to square one During the project we made regular walk throughs of the building with different members of the committee and steering group to see if we could make improvements to other areas of the facilities. Several areas where identified which included Additional Door Closers Draft exclusion to some doors Timers for heaters Closing larger areas to avoid excess heating and lighting

Finance & Administration Our Support officer employed through the CCF fund came with a sound back ground and knowledge in administration having worked within finance, golf and the construction industry and was able to bring useful experience to run and plan the project at hand. The initial stages of the project dealt mostly with the changes and upgrade to the facilities, careful planning had to be given to the schedule works to ensure as little disruption to the workings of the club with it being open 7 days per week. Consideration had to been taken into account to ensure the works by contractors were completed on time and that delays and re-schuleing could be made and tight deadline were met. Weekly meeting were held with the contractors to ensure that the coming weeks met the demands and needs of all. As far as possible during every stage research was done to ensure that the best products could be bought and that costs remained within the confines of the project budget. At the start of the project it was decided that as far as possible supply would be from within the community to reduce transportation implications on the environment and ensure that our project remained as far as possible a community project benefiting the community Claims tracker documentation provided by the CCF was instrumental to ensure that the project finances keep within the budget and were delivered to timelines required. In addition to this a spreadsheet was set up to allow us to track invoices and alleviate duplications and ensue that claims were made within the guidelines setup by CCF. On occasion through the evolvement of the project we moved funds to different headings, through the help and support of our CCF Development office this proved to be a straight forward procedure. During the first year of the project we had a slight overspend within our budget, which meant we were required to find saving for elsewhere to balance this we dropped the purchase and installation of Hydro dams to the toilet provisions. Fortunately we had an underspend within the vat section of £1000 these funds were transferred to another heading allowing us to install non concussive taps and to install the hydro dams. On the completion of the project we had been able to spend all funds which a slight underspend across several headings of £259.97, through approval we were able to spend these funds on Promotional & Identifiable Supporting Staff & Volunteers Apparel for events and information evenings.

Legacy For Royal Tarlair Golf Club, the Legacy most attributed to the project will be the much improved facility that the fund has afforded to us, these energy efficient upgrades will allow the club to be sustainable and greener for the future. The benefits we are already seeing even after such a short space of time and with the increased demand in use from community groups, which was our main aim at the start of the project. The Legacy that Royal Tarlair will give back, will be to continue to promote the benefits of carbon reduction, encourage and engage with the community to do likewise. We have set place serveral measurers to ensure that the club can continue to do this, this includes the continuation of display information within the clubhouse. Saving tips promoted throughout the course, rotated on a regular bases. We have also managed to secure promotion of carbon reduction within another business within the community. We will ensure that are staff remain vigilant and ensure that they continue to save and reduce energy usage as much as possible. We have also been fortunate to secure a further funded project through CCF, this project will allow us to push the message of climate change and carbon reduction to areas which could only have been identified through the experience we gained from our first project. This new project will include education of primary children, as we believe good practices learned at a young age become second nature for future life and will allow the next generation to be aware of the importance of climate change. Further home owners will be encouraged to take up the carbon reduction challenge

By making a few small changing around the home you

could help the environment and add a few extra pounds to your pocket.

Ideally you should wait at least 2 weeks before taking your meter reading again this will give you a better understanding of the amount of energy that you use.

B. End Normal Usage

If you have an energy monitor plug it in after you have taken you Monitoring End Date reading. Energy Monitors Socket style This will allow you to see how much energy each individual appliance in your home uses and by limited the used of high usage equipment you will reduce your carbon footprint and save you money Mains Connected Once connected using the products instructions, please ensure that you reset any reading figures and if you have to hand your recent electric bill input your unit costs. If you don’t have an energy monitor you will still be able to see high usage items by checking your meters.

High usage items are classed as items which will spike your meter, however most of these items are used for very short periods of times and limited in the use will improve your carbon footprint and costs. It’s now time to start making a few changes and see those numbers come down.

The Kitchen is an excellent place to start making savings

A Watched pot never boils, put a lid on the pot and it will boiler faster, always make sure you put the best sized pot on the relevant ring. Remember only boil the water you need.

When using the kettle don’t over fill, only use what you need

Fridges and Freezers work more efficiently if they are regularly defrosted and the coils on the back are vacuum cleaned to allow the heat to escape

Using the Toaster is far better than waiting for the cooker grill to heat up

1 Full load uses less energy than 2 ½ loads so fill it up

Ditch the drier whenever you can and hang your washing out to dry

Avoid drying on a radiator as this makes your boiler work harder

Around the Home

Switch Off

Don’t use standby always switch off, if it’s not being used, it can be switched off. If nobody is at home during the day or when your asleep, why not switch off your broadband router

Appliance timers are excellent to use with items that you regularly use, when you are at home and on the go. They save you from using standby when you are out. You can set them to come on slightly earlier, so that if the appliance needs to warm up before use, it’s all ready to go when you need it.

We take our lights for granted, if you haven’t already done so, it’s time to make the switch and change your bulbs to compact fluorescents.

Remember to switch off when the a room is not in use

Think about when your boiler is running, can you cut back on the amount of time that it is on.

Try setting the timer for 15 minutes less each day, why not try to reduce this by up to ½ an hour

Turn the thermostat down by 1 or two degrees

If you have a hot water tank make sure it has it’s jacket on
