How to use this competency based learning material

This learning material is designed to guide you in learning at your own pace. To start with, talk with your trainer and agree on how you will both organize the training for this module. Basics of Refrigeration

Refrigeration is the process of transferring heat from one area to another. If we remove heat from a substance, it becomes cold, and cold is merely the absence of heat. The removal of heat can be accomplished by using ice or any mechanical and non-mechanical means.

Mechanical refrigeration system uses compressor to move refrigerant into the system and keep the cycle. Those non-mechanical systems are the absorption system, the steam jet system, the thermo electric system and the magnetic system. Our discussion will concentrate on mechanical refrigeration system which is usually called vapor compression.

Principles of Refrigeration

The mechanical refrigeration system or vapor compression system has four stages taking place in the compressor, the condenser, the expansion valve and the

evaporator. It is divided into two pressure sides: the low pressure side and the high pressure side.

Compressor

It is referred to as the heart of the system. The compressor compresses the low pressure gas refrigerant, thus increasing the temperature; it also lowers the pressure in the evaporator, and keeps the refrigerant moving in the system.

Condenser

It is a coil of tubes where heat being absorbed in the evaporator discharges into the atmosphere. It can be found in the high pressure side of the system.

Expansion Valve

It is a metering device that controls the flow of the refrigerant to the evaporator. It reduces the high pressure liquid refrigerant to a low pressure liquid refrigerant in the correct quantities to operate the system at maximum efficiency and without overloading the compressor.

Evaporator

It is a coil of tubes where heat is being absorbed in order that it may be moved and transferred to the condenser. It is known as freezer, cooling coil or chilling unit. It can be found in the low pressure side of the system.

Refrigeration Cycle

At point 1, as the low pressure liquid refrigerant moves through the cooling coil or evaporator; it picks up heat from the foods placed inside the refrigeration cabinet. As the liquid refrigerants absorb heat, it changes to vapour. It is drawn into the compressor.

At point 2, the low pressure gas refrigerant is drawn into the compressor where it is subjected to a higher pressure due to the compression process done by the piston/ cylinder unit of the compressor. As a result of being compressed, the low pressure gas refrigerant increases its pressure and its temperature.

At point 3, the high pressure gas refrigerant passes to the condenser where heat is discharged and the vapour changes back to liquid; however this liquid is still high pressured.

At point 4, the pressure liquid refrigerant passes through the expansion valve, thus reducing the flow of refrigerant from high pressure liquid refrigerant turns into low pressure liquid refrigerant.

The entire cycle is repeated.

Purpose of Tubing and Piping

The correct size, lay-out, and installation of piping and fittings keep refrigeration or air-conditioning system operating properly and prevent refrigerant loss. The piping system provides passage for refrigerant to the evaporator, the compressor, the condenser and the expansion valve. It also provides the way for oil to drain back to the compressor. Tubing, piping and fittings used must be of the proper size, the system must be laid out properly and it must be installed correctly.

Types and Sizes of Tubing

Tubing Most tubing used in refrigeration and air-conditioning is made of copper. However, some aluminum, steel, stainless steel and plastic tubing are being used.

Most copper tubing used in air-conditioning and refrigeration work is known as Air-conditioning and Refrigeration (ACR) tubing. This designation means that the tubing is intended for air-conditioning and refrigeration.

ACR tubing is usually charged with gaseous nitrogen to keep it clean and dry until it is used. Nitrogen should be fed through it during brazing and soldering operations. Take care, it is dangerous to use.

This will eliminate the danger of oxidation inside the tube. All tubing should have the end plugged immediately after cutting a length from the piece.

Types of Tubing

1. Soft copper tubing- Specially annealed copper tubing is used in most refrigeration and air-

conditioning work. The term annealed, describe the degree of hardness. Soft copper may be bend or used with elbows, tees, and other fittings. It is usually purchased by 25 ft or 50 ft. Rolls and is specified by its outside diameter.

2. Hard-drawn copper tubing- Is used in a number of commercial and air-conditioning installations where

rigidity is needed. It is not intended to be bent; it is used only with fittings to obtain the necessary configurations. It is available in a straight length and larger diameter. The ends are capped or plugged to keep the inside of the tubing clean and dry. Hard drawn tubing is supplied in 20 ft. Lengths. It is available in the same diameters and thickness as soft copper tubing.

Copper tube sizes used in refrigeration and air-conditioning. Both soft and hard drawn sizes are the same as the measurements listed in the table. OD size for this tubing is the actual outside diameter of tube.

3. Steel tubing- Some thin-wall tubing is used in refrigeration and air-conditioning work, sizes

being practically the same as for copper tubing. Connections may be made on steel tubing by using either flared joints or silvered brazed joints.Copper or brass tubing should not be used with refrigerant R-717 (ammonia). Use steel tubing. There a chance of chemical reaction (corrosion) between ammonia and copper.

4. Stainless steel tubing- Stainless steel tubing in the usual refrigeration tube sizes. Stainless steel is

strong, very resistant to corrosion and may be easily connected to fittings by either flaring or brazing.

5. Plastic tubing- Polyethylene tubing is not used in the refrigerating cycle mechanisms but for

cold water lines, water cooled condensers and the like. Being very easy to use polyethylene may be cut with a knife. It may also be easily bent.

6. Flexible tubing (hose)- In many refrigeration and air-conditioning applications, the liquid line must be

flexible particularly true in many commercial and industrial refrigeration and air-conditioning applications.Air-conditioning equipment in motor vehicles requires the use of flexible tubing. Hose for this purpose is usually made from a variety of special materials. Such materials do not age, remain flexible, allow very low leakage through the hose wall and they are easy to attach to fittings.

Tube Processing

Tube Cutter To ensure an accurate square cut, a tube cutter is the most frequently used tool. On some types of tubing, it is advisable to use hacksaw and vise clamp, such in stainless steel, heavy wall thickness tube, and larger diameter tube.

How to use the tube cutter1. Mark the desired length of the tube.2. Turn the tightening knob counter clockwise to move back the cutting wheel.3. Insert the tube, and align the marked tube to the groove, roller, and the cutting

wheel.4. Turn the tightening knob clockwise to move the cutting wheel forward to the

marked tube, until a moderate pressure is applied to the tubing.

5. Revolve the cutter tube around the tubing, keeping moderate pressure applied to the tubing by gradually turning the tightening knob.

6. Continue the process until the tubing is cut. Do not apply excessive pressure because it may break the cutter wheel and constrict the opening of the tubing.

Flaring tools

When connecting tubing to fittings, it is common practice to flare the end and use fittings designed to grip the flare for vapor tight seal.

A set of flaring tool is the device used to flare tube. It has a flaring block that holds the tube, flaring yoke with spinner and feed screw, and wing nut to tighten the flaring block.

How to flare tubes1. Cut the tube to the right length.2. File square end of the tube and ream to remove all burrs; clean all residue and

Swaging tools

Swaging is the joining of two pieces of copper tubing of the same diameter by expanding or stretching the end of one piece to fit over the other so the joint may be soldered or brazed. As a general rule, the length of the joint that fits over the other is equal to the approximate outside diameter of the tubing.

How to swage tubing1. Cut the tube to the right length.2. File square end of the tube and ream to remove all burrs; clean all residue

should extend above the block by an amount equal to the outside diameter to the tube plus approximately 1/8 inch.

5. Inspect the tubing after swaging to see if there are cracks or other defects. If any are seen or suspected, cut off the swage and start all over again.

Importance of Support and Bracket

Hangers and supports keep piping systems suspended in place and are a necessary part of any piping project. Pipe hangers generally carry the weight from above with supporting members in tension, while pipe supports generally carry the weight from below with supporting members in compression. This section covers the various types of hangers and supports that have been developed to accommodate different needs, including insulated pipe, allowance for horizontal movement, and expansion and contraction of piping. In addition, this section covers the various items used to attach hangers and supports to the structure and maintain proper piping alignment.

Types of Pipe Hangers/ Sopports

Hanger/Support Adjustable Steel Band Hangers

A type of pipe hanger that supports the pipe on a continuous strap of metal whose ends are joined at the top by a supporting rod. This rod bots through the strap and is adjustable vertically without a temporary support during adjustment.

Hanger/Support Adjustable Steel Clevis Hangers

A type of pipe hanger with a swivel yoke supported at the top by an adjustable vertical rod. This yoke bolts to pin holding a U-strap of metal (clevis) that supports the pipe.

Hanger/Support Anchors

Anchors are installed to secure piping systems against expansion or contraction and to eliminate pipe vibration. When installing anchors, damage to the building wall or

steel must be prevented. Common anchor materials are strap steel, cast iron, angles, steel plate, channels, and steel clamps.

Hanger/Support Guides

Guides are designed to maintain alignment of piping, while allowing for axial expansion and contraction cycles. Normally, two or more pipe alignment guides are used on a single piping run to avoid a pivoting effect within the piping system.

Hanger/Support Riser Clamp

Riser clamps are required to support and steady vertical piping or tubing. They consist of two metal straps, each with a half-circle, which are bolted together around a pipe. Riser clamps come in various materials and configurations depending on the pipe material and the application. Materials include steel, copper, and PVC-coated steel.

Hanger/Support Roller Hangers

A pipe hanger similar to a clevis hanger except that the yoke bolts to a roller rod instead of a metal strap. This roller rod supports the pipe and permits horizontal movement due to expansion and contraction caused by changes in temperature.

Note:

Support the lines every six to ten feet, and within two feet of bends. Avoid direct contact on the line set with water pipes and /or ductwork. Wire or straps used to support the tubing should contain foam rubber or similar insulation to isolate the tubing from the building structure. This prevents unwanted noise transmission.

Installing and Using Pipe Hangers

Tools and Materials Needed:

Procedures

Step 1 – Determine Pipe Hangers Needed

When you're hanging any type of pipe in the basement and using pipe hangers you need to know how many you will need for the job. Keep in mind that when installing pipe in an area where the space is minimum you need to use the rafters to get the pipe in place. This means the pipe has to run within those confines using pipe hangers to support them. Place one pipe hanger every two feet for smaller pipes but every one foot for large pipes. If you are concerned of the weight of the pipe when it is full of water then you may use more pipe hangers. The more you have the more stable the pipe will be which will limit the clanging of pipes.

Step 2 – Mark the Locations

Using pipe hangers is relatively easy but you need to know where they are going to go. You have already estimated how many you will need. Use one of the pipe hangers and place it over the installed pipe. Use the holes in the hanger as a guide

and use the marker to mark through the hole. Do this for every pipe hanger you plan to install as discussed in Step 1.

Step 3 – Pilot Holes

The beams in the home are often too thick for conventional screwdrivers. Pilot holes allow you to mark where a screw or bolt is to be installed as well as gives the screw or bolt a starting point. To make pilot holes for pipe hangers you will need to have the pipe installed already and the correct size of pipe hangers. Since the spacing has been marked in Step 2 this is much easier. Choose a drill bit that is smaller diameter than the screw you are planning to use. Make a hole through the guide you made in Step 2 to a 1/8-inch depth.

Step 4 – Install the Pipe Hangers

Take the first pipe hanger and slide it over the pipe where you made the pilot holes. It should fit just right as you have tested the fit previously. Line the pipe hanger up with the holes and insert the first screw. Use the electric screwdriver to set it and repeat with all of the pipe hangers

Maximum Pipe Length and Maximum Number of Bends

When the pipe length becomes too long, both the capacity and reliability drop. As the number of bends increases, system piping resistance to the refrigerant flow increases. Thus lowering the cooling capacity and as a result the compressor may become defective. Always choose the shortest path and allow the recommendations as tabulated below:

Installing Refrigerant Tubing Lines

Installing the Correct Metering Device

Before connecting the refrigerant lines, it is important to make sure that the metering device for the indoor unit is the size and or type specified in the installation instructions for the indoor unit.

The refrigerant lines used to connect the outdoor and the indoor units can be a manufactured tubing kit (line set) or they can be field supplied and assembled from the refrigerant grade (ACR) tubing of the correct size. Line sets come in various lengths and tubing diameters. Line sets may have no fittings on the ends, compression or flare fittings, or may come pre-charged with refrigerant and have quickly connects ends. If the field supplied tubing used, the vapor line (suction line in cooling only systems) must be adequately insulated. Field supplied tubing should be installed in a similar manner. The sizes of the liquid and vapor line tubing used with a split system are specified in the installation instructions for the outdoor unit and apply to tubing runs up to 50 feet. Tubing runs greater than 50 feet are considered long line applications. Before installing a long line system, you should know always follow the recommendations given in the manufacturer’s Guidelines for Split System Long-line Applications.

Running the refrigerant lines between units is best done by two people and is accomplish as follows:

1. Remove the line set from the shipping cartoon. The liquid line is smaller diameter un-insulated line (for units with metering device installed at the outdoor unit except unitary); the vapour line is larger and is insulated with black foam rubber. Do not remove the rubber plugs from the ends at this time.

2. One at a time, unroll and straighten out both lines and tape the lines together at convenient intervals. One person can unroll while the other holds the tubing. Be careful not to collapse the tubing and avoid bends that can kink the tubing.

3. Being careful not to cut the installation, feed the taped bundle of tubing through the hole in the outside wall until enough tubing is available to easily reach the refrigerants connections on the outdoor unit. Leave enough slack between the structure and the unit to absorb vibration. Seal the opening in the wall with caulk.

4. Run the refrigerant lines between the units as directly as possible by avoiding unnecessary turns and bends. Use tubing benders to make any sharp bends or cut the line sets and use sweat elbows, if required.

NOTE:

Do not bury more than 36 inches of refrigerant tubing in the ground. If more than 36 inches of tubing is buried, refrigerant can migrate to the cooler buried section during extended periods of unit shutdown, causing refrigerant slugging and possible compressor damage start-up. If any tubing is buried, at least six inches of vertical rise should be provided at the service valve. Also recommended that a crankcase heater be installed the unit.

Vapor Line Considerations

The location of the indoor coil relative to the compressor in the outdoor unit must also be considered when running the refrigerant tubing. When the indoor coil is located above the compressor, the vapor line should loop up to the height of the indoor coil (see figure 1-12). This helps to prevent liquid refrigerant from migrating to the compressor during the off cycle.

When the indoor coil and compressor are at the same level, the vapor line should pitch toward the compressor (see figure 1-13) with no sags or dips in straight runs.

When the indoor coil is below the compressor, oil must be returned to the compressor via vertical riser in the vapor line (see figure 1-14). An oil trap should be provided at the entrance to the riser to collect and feed back small amounts of oil to the compressor to prevent compressor damage. The horizontal run to the compressor should also be pitched toward the compressor.

Connecting Refrigerant Lines to the Indoor and Outdoor Units

Brazing and mechanical fittings are two methods commonly used to connect refrigerant lines to split system components. To prevent contamination and moisture from entering the system, do not remove protective dust covers and / or plugs from the equipment or tubing just before making the actual connection.

PROCEDURES:

The outdoor unit normally comes from the factory with the operating charge of refrigerant sealed in the outdoor unit by the service valves. Be sure to check code requirements pertaining to the use of silver bearing on non-silver bearing brazing material. Connections are brazed at the outdoor and indoor unit as follows:

1. At the outdoor unit, slide back the insulation and clean the exposed vapour tubing.

2. Remove the plugs from the end of the tubing and the vapour service port, and then insert the end of the tubing into the port until it bottoms. Brazed the joints.

Caution: Make sure to wrap the service valve with a wet cloth to avoid damaging the valve while brazing. A brazing shield should be also be used to prevent damage to any painted surface. Inspect the joint when done.

3. Good practice is to install a filter-drier in the liquid line. For cooling systems, make sure that the arrow on the filter points away from the outdoor unit and toward the indoor evaporator coil.

4. At the indoor coil or fan coil, remove the plugs when ready to make the connections, and then braze the vapour and liquid lines to the coil. Inspect the joints when done. Some coils are also shipped with a flare adapter, liquid line strainer, and flow direction sticker. These must be installed on the liquid service valve after which the liquid line is brazed to the flare adapter.

5. After the brazing is completed and the joints inspected, seal the openings around the coil access plate to prevent air leakage.

Making a Mechanical Connections

General Instruction:Outdoor and indoor units can have several different kinds of mechanical connections. Connecting refrigerant lines with mechanical-type connectors should always be done as directed in the installation instructions. Compression fittings that use a ferrule and locknut are commonly used.

Procedure:

1. Cut the tubing to the correct length, making sure the tube ends are square. The tubing should be clean, round and free of nicks and / or burrs.

2. Slide the locknut onto the tubing, followed by the ferrule.3. Lubricate the ferrule and the threads of the mating valve or adapter threads

with a few drops of refrigerant oil.4. Insert the end of the tubing into the mating valve or adapter until it bottoms.

Push the ferrule in place and tighten the locknut until an increase in torque is felt.

5. Mark the nut tubing, then tighten the nut 1 ½ turns from the mark. Be sure to keep the tubing bottomed in the valve or adapter while tightening the nut. A backup wrench should be used on the hex part of the valve or adapter while tightening.

Purpose of Piping Insulation

The  primary  purpose  of  insulation  is  to  prevent heat passage from steam or hot-water pipelines to the surrounding  air  or  from  the  surrounding  air  to cold-water pipes. Thus hot-water lines are insulated to prevent loss of heat from the hot water,

while drinking waterlines are insulated to prevent absorption of heat in drinking water

Insulation keeps moisture from condensing on the outside of cold pipes.  An example of condensation consists of droplets of moisture on the outside of a glass of ice water on a warm day. The same thing happens to the outside of a pipe containing cold water when the outside of the pipe is exposed to warm air. Insulation also prevents water from freezing in a pipe, especially when the pipe runs outside a building or in a building without heat. Insulation is used on heating and air-conditioning ducts. The two kinds of duct insulation are (1) inside and (2) outside. The outside insulation is for the protection of heat loss, whereas the inside insulation is used for protection against noise and vibration from heating or air-conditioning equipment. Insulation subdues noise made by the flow of water inside pipes, such as water closet discharges. Bathrooms directly above living rooms should be insulated.

Insulation is vital in high buildings where water falls a long way, especially when the water falls in soil stacks and headers. Insulation also protects refrigerated and chilled waterlines that cool electrical and motor-driven equipment.

Insulation is made in two forms:  (1) rigid preformed sections and (2) blankets. Rigid preformed sections are used on pipe runs and to protect other objects which they are designed to fit. Blanket-type insulation, manufactured in strips, sheets, and blocks, is wrapped around objects that are irregular in shape and large, flat areas. Blanket-type insulation protects against heat loss and fire. This type of insulation is used on boilers, furnaces, tanks, drums, driers, ovens, flanges, and valves. It comes in wool-felt and hair-felt rolls,   aluminum   foil   rolls,   and   in   an   irregular preformed covering. Blanket insulation comes in different widths and thicknesses, depending upon the type of equipment to be insulated. It resists vermin, rodents, and acid. It is also fireproof

Types of Pipe Insulation

Some  of  the  insulating  materials  on  the market today for insulating pipe are sponge felt paper, cork pipe covering, wool felt, flex rubber, fiber glass, magnesia, and types called anti sweat and frost proof.

Sponge Felt Paper Is composed of asbestos paper with a maximum amount of sponge evenly distributed within it. Sponge felt paper is manufactured to fit most pipe sizes. It comes in 3-foot lengths and from 1 to 3 inches in thickness.

Molded Cork Pipe Covering Is a granulated material processed from the bark of cork trees Granulated cork is compressed and molded to size and shape and finished with a coating of plastic asphalt. Cork pipe covering, is an ideal covering for brine, ammonia, ice water, and all kinds of cold waterlines, and it insulates well over a wide low-temperature range. Cork pipe covering does not rot or support combustion. Clean, sanitary, and odor free, it is available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes to fit various sizes of pipes and fittings.

Is made of matted fibers of wool, wool and fur, or hair, worked into a compacted material by pressure rolling. It is used on cold-water service and hot-water return  lines.  Wool  felt preformed  pipe covering  is  manufactured  in  thicknesses  of  l/2  to  1 inch, with a canvas jacket, as shown in view C, figure 4-24. It is manufactured in 3-foot lengths for straight runs of pipe.

Flex Rubber InsulationIs a tough, flexible rubber material constructed of    millions    of    uniform    closed cells,   It    has good-insulating  qualities,  good-cementing  qualities, excellent  weather-aging  qualities,  and  it  is  ideal  for  the prevention of sweating cold-water lines. In addition, it is water and flame resistant. Flex rubber insulation is  recommended  for covering  tubing  used  in refrigeration and cold-water lines in homes, as well as in industrial  plants  and  commercial  buildings.  This rubber insulating material comes in random lengths, with a wall thickness size of 3/8 to 3/4 inch. It is made to fit pipe sizes up to 4 inches. Flex  rubber  insulation  can  be  installed  on  pipes and  tubing  by  slipping the  insulation  over  the  pipe when it is being assembled or by slitting the rubber lengthwise  and  sealing  it  with  cement.  Before installing flex rubber insulation on iron or galvanized pipes, paint the pipes with an asphaltic base primer to prevent corrosion caused by condensation.

Fiber Glass Pipe InsulationIs composed of very fine glass fibers, bound and formed together by an inactive resin type of mixture. It is formed into a flexible hollow cylinder and slit along its length for applying to pipes or tubing. It is furnished in 3-foot lengths with or without jackets. The insulation comes in thicknesses from l/2 to 2 inches and fits pipes from l/2 to 30 inches. Fiber glass insulation has a long life; it will not shrink, swell, rot, or burn. It is easily applied, light in weight, saves space, and has excellent insulating qualities.

Anti Sweat InsulationIs designed for cold-water pipes. It keeps the water colder in the pipes than most types of insulation; and when installed properly, it prevents condensation, or sweating, of the pipes. The outstanding feature of anti sweat insulation is its construction. It is composed of an inner layer of asphalt-saturated asbestos paper, a 1/2-inch layer of wool felt, two layers of asphalt-saturated asbestos felt, another l/2-inch layer of pure wool felt, and an outer layer of deadening felts with asphalt-saturated felts. The outer layer has a flap about 3 inches long that extends beyond the joint to help make a perfect seal. A canvas jacket is placed around each 3-foot length to protect the outer felt covering.

Frostproof InsulationIs manufactured for use on (1) cold-water service lines that pass through unheated areas and (2) those lines exposed to outside weather conditions. Frostproof  insulation  is generally  constructed  of five layers of felt. There are three layers of pure wool felt and two layers of asphalt-saturated asbestos felt. Frostproof insulation is 1 l/4 inches thick and comes in 3-foot lengths with a canvas cover.

Recessed light fixtures can increase heat loss. Always wear the proper protective gear when installing insulation; including

gloves, mask, and safety goggles.

Job Sheet How to Insulate Refrigerant Lines

Tools, Equipment and Materials Needed

Razor knife Tape measure Refrigerant-line flexible-tube insulation Cloth-backed duct tape Adhesive (Rugby) Expanding foam aerosol spray

Instructions:1. Remove all of the damaged insulation from the refrigerant line. Slice any

insulation that has melted to the refrigerant line with a razor knife, then peel it away in sections. If the insulation extends into a refrigerant-line chase, a PVC pipe that penetrates the floor slab, then remove the foam sealant around the refrigeration lines. This foam sealant will break away in chunks.

2. Measure the diameter of the large refrigerant line with a tape measure. Most large refrigerant lines measure either 3/4, 7/8 or 1 1/8 inch across the diameter. Buy refrigerant-line flexible-foam insulation sized for the refrigerant line.

3. Measure the refrigerant line's length. If the refrigerant line has a bend, then measure around the outside of the bend. If the refrigerant line enters a chase, extend the measurement 6 inches into the chase. Each piece of foam insulation will measure either 4 or 5 feet long, depending on the insulation's manufacturer.

4. Cut a piece of refrigerant-line flexible-foam insulation the same length as the refrigerant line's measurement with the razor knife. Refrigerant-line flexible-foam insulation, a black or gray tube, has the same inside diameter as the refrigerant line's outside diameter. The inside of the tube will have a powder coating, which acts like a lubricant, to aid in installation.

5. Open a piece of the refrigerant-line insulation along its seam. The flexible-foam insulation has a seam that runs along its length. The seam has plastic-covered glue on one side.

6. Slip the open foam-insulation's seam over the refrigerant line. Once the refrigerant line has entered the tube, allow the tube to snap shut.

7. Pull the plastic covering from the glue, found on one side of the seam.8. Squeeze the seam together. This will allow the seam's glue to bond with the

other side of the seam.9. Slip each piece of insulation onto the straight parts of the refrigerant line. In

places with bends, push the insulation over the bend after squeezing the seam. The powder inside of the foam tube will allow the insulation to slide around bends.

10.Wrap the joints between each piece of insulation with a cloth-backed duct tape. Tape the insulation to the air conditioning unit. If the glued seam will not remain together, then close the gap with duct tape.

11.Fill the refrigerant-line chase with an expanding foam aerosol spray. Expanding foam will completely seal the chase.
