• Let’s test this theory out….
Complete the following statements:

The Good News….• Leadership opportunities, force us
to think differently and creatively to solve problems and move our groups towards a common goal.
• Choosing to lead is only the first step. Learning to lead takes the rest of your life.
• You will learn more outside of the classroom than in them. What is the greatest lesson you have learned thus far?
Catalytic Leadership Model Points
PROVE
2 + 2 = 30 TEACHHOSPITALITY
ProveProve• How do you know what you say is TRUE?• Evaluations and surveys are NOT ENOUGH! What do you
do here at UMASS Dartmouth to back up your claims?• I’m curious:– “On average, I get 7-8 hours of sleep each night”– “I eat three meals per day”– “I consider myself organized.”– “I know why I am involved”– “I know why Res Life exist at college”
• This is an area leaders spend not enough time in. Talk to people directly to find the answers you seek.
HospitalityHospitality• Catalytic contact is at the heart of this
model. What is a catalyst? • How would you define “hospitality?”
- Dictionary.com defines it as “Cordial and generous reception of or disposition toward guests.”
• If your residents don’t feel like they matter, they will go somewhere else to find that connection.
2 + 2 = 302 + 2 = 30• Can the above equation be true?
Why or Why Not?• Thinking of leadership differently.• Get in groups of 3-4 and answer
these questions:– Just because you are an RA, do
you consider yourself a leader?–Who are models of leaders that
you look up to and why?–What do you hope to learn from
being a leader?

TeachTeach• Part of why we lead is because we know what we are
doing. Part of actually leading is teaching what we know to others instead of doing it all ourselves.
• Communication Exercise– Paper Communication
• How much time do you spend doing versus teaching others. If it isn’t at least 50/50, you’ve missed opportunities to grow your organization (and you!)
• You will not be there forever! Give others the opportunities you have had!
Bringing it all Together
• Four Volunteers to Represent All Four Points!?!• CHAIR CHALLENGE• You need all four parts to succeed. But what
happens when things get rough, will you do things yourself or will you reach out for your members?
• What can still keep your group together is each other… and holding on…. Supporting and encouraging one another….. And being a Catalytic Leader
