Provenance: The Pende Mbangu Sickness mask and the Lega land turtle shell mask below where both collected before 1958 on site by Dr. Herman Wouters (author of several books on Black Africa) .
Lega land turtle shell mask, from the Lega tribe living in eastern DR Congo. ex-collection Dr. Herman Wouters
MATERIAL: Land turtle kinixys erosa , cord and chicken feathers. It measures 8"( 20,5 cm) in height . It shows wear and tear and a nice patina. The mask is carved with round decorations.
A Lega Bone Lukunga Masquette A nice looking Lega bone mask , 11,5 cm = 4,5 inch.

Lega Bone Mask, COWRIES shape slit eyes and mouth , a straight nose and incised circular decoration on the forehead and cheeks, 5 pierced holes on bottom, brown worn surface, old style and patina. Used by the Bwami society of the Lega peoples. They play a vital role during initiation into the society's highest grades. The Lega differentiate five categories of masks, based on material, size, and form. The masks representing physical beauty and moral excellence refer to ancestors and are passed from one generation of initiates to the next as symbols of continuity.

Part of the Okoroshi festivities, is a six week masking season during which water spirits (maskers) bless the growing crops during the height of the rainy season, then usher in the eating of New Yam. White-faced masks generally embody benign female characters who dance prettily in open arenas for large crowds. They are conceptually opposed to dark masked male characters who are more seldom. Provenance: a United Kingdom collection.

Important Bamileke figure with three heads -Cameroun
Rare BAMILEKE figure: Collected in the Bamileke chiefdom BALESSING (in Bamiléké "Lessing" means the one who trembles, who has fear) in Cameroon between 1951 and 1953 by LOUIS TERRIER, director of CAMRAIL. This dates the sculpture in the 1930s. Collected by the Grand -Uncle from Peter M. Terrier, a great collector of African Art from whom I have bought this object. PROVENANCE: LOUIS TERRIER SIZE: 66cm - 69cm on the base.

Big Fang Mabea Figure Beginning to mid 20th century - moderate condition Height: 68 cm or 26.77 inches Carved in the soft wood of the Okoume tree. Cupper inserts into the eyes. Cupper rings on the upper and lower part of the arms. One hand restored. The Mabea were an advanced group of the Maka migration from North Gabon, Eastern Cameroon. The Fang arrived later, absorbing the population that dissapeared. Image: Fang Coiffe , North Gabon, 1900, P.P. du Saint-Esprit.DR PROVENANCE: This Fang Mabea was purchased in 1958 at the Convent of the Brothers of the Holy Spirit, in Barcelona, by the Dutch Suzanna Westerdijk. Here son Peter Westerdijk wrote several books on African weapons. After her death Peter decided to sell here Fang statues collection . Confirmed the presence of the cylindrical part of wood in the back to insert the figure in the bark container to keep the bones of the Fang N'tumu ancestor in family shrines .
