Elsie Wunderlich Nature that Survives Poetically Naturaleza que Sobrevive Poéticamente

The Art Of Elsie Wunderlich It can be spoken of in terms of musical poetic architecture. Flying buttresses exist as branches that sink into the earth… Earth? No, in the water and then, reflected, they survive visually, or more precisely, poetically. It is the pictorial poetry of the painter, but a painter that creates music whose fusion produces architecture – not of stone – but of visual poetry. And those floating, flying leaves? Elemental, dear public, lets not forget those verses of the ode to the tree: “…move your ear closer to each leaf, and you will hear the voice of God…” The work of this artist is a pure art, lyrical, in love with life, with colors that love each other and also love us; an art of painted sounds that can be seen; reflections of an angelical painter that has recently conceived the human presence within her other-wordly realm. El Arte de Elsie Wunderlich Podemos hablar de arquitectura musical poética. Los arbotantes son ramas que se hunden en la tier… ¿tierra? No, en el agua y entonces, reflejadas, sobreviven visualmente, más bien poéticamente. Es la poesía pictórica de la pintora, pero una pintora que hace música y esa unión produce una arquitectura – no de piedra – sino de poesía visual. ¿Y esas hojas flotantes, voladoras? Elsie Wunderlich (née Padilla Ferguson) was born in

Guatemala where she presently lives and works.

When se was 14 years old she discovered here

interest in Art, and at her 16 she formally started

studying Painting, and later on, Architecture and

Sculpture. She has traveled around the world in the

search of new landscapes, for her inspiration and the

recreation of nature, thus expressing her endless

devotion towards landscape. As a result, she has

created her own shapes and colors while proposing a

They didn’t appear yesterday or last week to meet the rough bullring of the national fine arts, where the sharp horns of contempt and mediocrity throw venomous horn thrusts. Elsie has been in this bloodless arena since 1983, and almost twenty years contradict that old tango: twenty years is too much. Especially when they have been supported with serious and tenacious work, without neglecting the technique and language.

While from the trenches of progress the human being is preoccupied and occupied with transforming, contaminating and destroying nature without accepting or respecting the Kyoto protocol and the ecologists’ distress calls; Elsie is involved with a higher and more gratifying mission: to recreate it. Yesterday submerged naked of prejudice and convention in the “Garavitian” waters of Lake Atitlán is treacherous xocomiles (strong winds) or dressed in the colors of the “Monetian” garden in Giverny. On her incursion into that paradise with no biblical trees or original sins, she is indebted to us. She gave us her summer and fall impressions but left behind a deep immersion without a diving suit into the spring and winter of that garden, so dear to Monet, to impressionism and to universal art. Elsie doesn’t make unexpected leaps into a void or the exaggerated skips of a circus acrobat. Her path glides on a safe track and she conducts the steering wheel with a firm Grip in the midst of existential storms, formal conflicts or stumbling against the rough stones of the pictorial language. Now she comes out of traps set by flowers that devour warm colours, waters of deceptive transparencies and green hells repeated until the infinite. She has refined the hues by caressing them so much with her fingers, the blues are invented skies and in the semi-darkness of insinuated plains the presence of the atom and the galaxy blinks. She lets loose newborn leaves or those turned golden by the fire of late afternoon, to sail into sub worlds of liquid dreams in search of submerged cathedrals imagined by Debussy in other latitudes. Those relating to photographic reality sleep locked in a dark prison of virgin film, and discover, cosmonaut with his feet on the ground, the numb certainty at the bottom of the conscience: the truth can also be invented. She already knows the way, its risks and its shadows, its lights lustered by dawn and the shooting star that hurts the pupil. Her internal compass shows the right course. Here she is with her painting to communicate her emotions to us. She is the painter. She is simply Elsie.

Mientras el ser humano desde las trincheras del progreso se preocupa y ocupa en transformar, contaminar y destruir la naturaleza sin aceptar ni respetar protocolos de Kyoto y llamados de auxilio ecologistas, Elsie se involucra en una misión más alta y gratificante: recrearla. Ayer sumergida desnuda de prejuicios y convencionalismos en las garavitianas aguas atitecas de xochomiles traicioneros o vestida de colores en el jardín monetiano de Giverny. Sobre su incursión en ese paraíso sin árboles bíblicos ni pecados originales, está en deuda con nosotros, Nos entrego sus impresiones de verano y otoño pero dejo como materia atrasada una inmersión a fondo y sin escafandra en la primavera y el invierno de ese jardín tan caro a Monet, al impresionismo y al arte universal. Elsie no da saltos inesperados al vacío ni brincos exagerados de volatín circense. Su trayectoria se desliza sobre carril seguro y maneja el timón con mano firme en medio de tempestades existenciales, conflictos formales o tropezones en los pedruscos del lenguaje pictórico. Ahora sale de trampas tendidas por flores devoradoras de colores cálidos y aguas de transparencias engañosas e infiernos verdes repetidos hasta el infinito. Ha refinado los matices de tanto acariciarlos con los dedos, los azules son cielos inventados en la penumbra de planos sugeridos parpadea la presencia del átomo y la galaxia. Suelta hojas recién nacidas o doradas en el fuego del atardecer a navegar en submundos de sueño liquido en busca de catedrales sumergidas Imaginadas por Debussy en otras latitudes. Los referentes de la realidad fotográfica duermen encerrados en celda obscura de película virgen, y descubre, cosmonauta con los pies en la tierra, la certeza adormecida en el fondo de la conciencia: La verdad también se inventa. Ya conoce el camino, sus riesgos y sus sombras, sus luces abrillantadas por el amanecer y la estrella fugaz que hiere la pupila. Su brújula interior marca el rumbo correcto. Aquí está hoy su pintura para comunicarnos sus emociones. Ella es la pintora Elsie a secas.

That is, she doesn't copy the motive literally, she causes it to undergo a transmutation of values where she removes, adds, reduces and juxtaposes shades, after all, there is a good amount of subjectivity, condition which, it's not possible to achieve the poetic phenomenon. Nature is for her, object and subject at the same time. Elsie Wunderlich

(Padilla – Ferguson)

Guatemalan artist , recently received Honorary Citizen by the Community of Mornico Losana in Italy for his artistic activity in that country. Elsie began to study painting and drawing at 16 years of age, and over time to have developed a very personal artistic language. Nature lover, constant source of its inspiration, making integration between humanity and Nature. He received his academic training at Francisco Marroquin University where she studied Architecture and Art History at the National School of Fine Arts and in workshops with different masters of the plastic in Guatemala, Italy and France. She has made numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries, museums, art fairs and Biennials and in prestigious universities in different cities in the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, France and Italy. It is worth mentioning some of his exhibitions: Museum of Modern Art in Guatemala, Ate Paiz Biennial in Guatemala, Centenario Neruda, Chilean Embassy in Guatemala and centenary of Frida Kahlo, Mexico Embassy in Guatemala. "VIII Iberoamerican Exhibition of Painting" Meridian International Center in Washington DC, "Women for Art" MOLAA Latin American Art Museum, USA., Art Fair "Art Miami" Convention Center in Florida USA., Latin American Art Biennial, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Louisiana Museum Ziegler, "Nouvelle Tendance Figurative", in Paris,. recently performed several solo exhibitions in Italy: in the year 2,011 and 2,012, at the University of Pavia, 2011 and 2012, in the Cantinone Medievale the Comune Di Pietra Giorgi, . 2012, in the Castle of Mornico Losana, and La Galeria La Pigna Rome. And in the pallazzo Certosa Cantu in Casteggio, Italy , in June 2013. In 1987 she received the prize for painting in the second National Painting Competition Shell. In October, 2,009 received the medal of "Artist of the Year" by the organization "Artist of the Year Award in Guatemala". Organized by the Alexander Von Humboldt Institute.
