V8 suPercars race wraP - dick smith sandown 500Castrol-backed Ford Performance

Racing duo Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richards overcame

a 15th place grid position to finish runner-up in the Sandown 500, the first endurance race of the 2012 season. Triple8’s Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff won the race from Frosty and Richo with series leader Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell third.

A blistering opening stint by Richards followed by consistent pace and a late race pass by Winterbottom on title rival Jamie Whincup ensured the pair overcame the dramas that sullied their Saturday pace. David Reynolds and Dean Canto were on course to claim a maiden podium for Reynolds with Canto leading much of the first part of the race and despite Reynolds holding a comfortable third they eventually slipped to sixth after a delayed final pit stop due to a problem when replacing the brake pads.

Will Davison and John McIntyre started off the back row and tried a unique strategy to gain as much ground as possible. Davison was in the mid-field when he handed the car to McIntyre though a lack of pace late in the second stint coupled with a slow pit stop meant Davison was outside the top 20 when he retook the wheel in the last third of the race. Although nearly a lap down he pulled away from the leaders and recovered to 17th to highlight he would have been a threat if not taken out of yesterday’s qualifying race.

Supercheap Auto Racing’s Russell Ingall and Christian Klien finished 11th after being crashed into on just the fifth lap of the race. Klien got away to a good start in the 161-lap enduro from 15th and gained a position immediately, the Austrian quickly settling into his first Sandown 500.

From there, Klien continued to lap 33

before pitting for the first time for fuel and tyres, and then rounded out his stint by pitting to hand over to Ingall on lap 72. Ingall re-joined the race in 22nd and by the halfway mark of the 161 lap race sat in 14th. He moved into 11th by lap 99 before pitting for the last time 18 laps later – after the shuffle of stops the #66 SCAR Commodore 14th with 40 laps to the finish. The gap to the top 10 cars on track proved to be too great, with Ingall falling just 0.5sec short of breaking into the 10 at the fall of the chequered flag.

“I think we were looking good to finish top half dozen but Christian got fired off by one of the DJR cars. He did a great job to get the car through the gravel trap when he got fired off and bring it back from there,” said Ingall “The Supercheap Auto Commodore was banged up pretty bad; we lost the rear diffuser and the bonnet was pushed up. It was pretty wounded so we had

to deal with that along with some other electronic issues for the rest of the race. We got onto the lead group in the last couple laps and I reckon a few more laps we would have finished inside the 10 – but after what happened we can’t complain with 11th.”

Confidence was high at within the Castrol-backed Kelly Racing camp going into the Dick Smith Sandown 500 race after strong qualifying races and a positive warm up session earlier in the day.

Dave Russell started the race in car #15 Jack Daniel’s car from position 5 and Tim Blanchard in car #7 Jack Daniel’s car from 17th. However the team suffered early minor setbacks when Dave Russell was forced wide and dropped a couple of spots to 9th and on the same lap Tim Blanchard ran wide in turn 10 and tumbled down the order to 25th.

At the midway point of the race, lap 80, Rick was 12th and Todd 17th. From there the race became rather processional with no safety car periods. Both drivers put in strong drives to finish with Rick crossing the line 12th after a long battle with Russell Ingall and Todd 18th while holding Alex Premat at bay.

“Today was a bit of a bummer as we got shuffled back early in the race,” said Rick Kelly. The car wasn’t ideal for us today and wasn’t as strong as yesterday. We had a really good battle with Russell Ingall, but there wasn’t much we could do. We made some changes early in the weekend that gave us good pace so if we keep moving in that direction, we should be able to have a good Bathurst.”

After a frustrating day of racing on Saturday Greg Murphy/Owen Kelly in the Pepsi Max Commodore and Karl Reindler/Daniel Gaunt decided

on making significant engineering changes overnight with car #51 and #11 both responding well to the setup overhaul. Improvements to overall race results for the Pepsi Max Crew garage were hampered by an oil pressure issue which became apparent in the morning’s warm-up session. Despite efforts to combat the problem the #51 machine could not be completely fixed by the race start forcing co-diver Owen Kelly to make several unscheduled stops in the early stages of the race.

Despite the issue leaving Murphy and Kelly several laps down, once the oil pressure issue was rectified they were able to post competitive lap times until the end of the race. The enduro pairing of Reindler and Gaunt also tuned their Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing Commodore into a more manageable race car, but the lack of safety cars during the race and an issue with tyre degradation made racing tough for the popular pair.

Castrol-backed Ford World Rally Team drivers Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila won Wales

Rally GB for the second consecutive season. The Finns won this 10th round of the FIA World Rally Championship by 27.8 seconds in a Ford Fiesta RS World Rally Car, securing their seventh world rally victory after three days of competition through slippery Welsh forests.

Team-mates Petter Solberg and Chris Patterson provided further celebration for the Ford squad by claiming third in another Fiesta RS WRC after a thrilling final day battle. Solberg swapped places with Sébastien Loeb through virtually every speed test in today’s third leg, eventually missing out on second by just 0.9sec after 19 special stages and 324.92km of action.

“This win means a lot to me,” said Latvala. “Rally GB is like a second home event because I started my career here 10 years ago, and I have more experience of this event than my own rally in Finland. It’s one of my favourite rounds and this is the first time in my career that I have won the same rally in consecutive seasons.

Nine rallies, nine class victories and Castrol-backed Volkswagen Motorsport has successfully continued its test programme for the coming season in the World Rally Championship. Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia won the strongly represented Super 2000 class at the WRC Rally Great Britain in Wales, finished in 12th overall and collected valuable experience on

the many fast, and at times, slippery gravel stages.

Their teammates Kevin Abbring and Frédéric Miclotte (NL/B) finished in 25th after sustaining suspension damage and also gained crucial insights into the tradition-steeped rally for the team. Volkswagen Motorsport fields two Fabia S2000 cars of the Groups koda brand in order to prepare under competition conditions for the 2013 season in which Volkswagen will compete with the new Polo R WRC.

Amongst the success stories was the Castrol-backed M-Sport Ford World Rally Team – Ott Tänak and Evgeny Novikov proving that the privateers have the pace to challenge the works teams.

Continually challenging the top drivers during the course of the rally, M-Sport’s regular point scorers impressed over the weekend. Posting continuous top-five times throughout yesterday’s competitive action, both drivers were tantalisingly close to claiming a stage win – Tänak missing out by 0.5 seconds on SS10 and Novikov by just 0.1 seconds on SS11. But there were mixed fortunes for the youngsters on the final day. As Novikov claimed his best ever finish on the Welsh stages, Tänak hit cruel misfortune and was forced to retire from what was set to be sixth place.

“The rally has been good. It was not so wet as usual, but still quite slippery and everything was fine and we coped well in the conditions,” said Novikov. “Ilka [Minor] was a very good co-driver for

me on this event and we worked well together. I enjoyed the rally a lot and this was my best finish on this event. This was a very good result for me and of course I am very happy.”

The World Rally Championship reverts to asphalt next month when Strasbourg hosts Rallye de France on 4 - 7 October, the final pure sealed surface round of the season.

The Castrol-backed Team San Carlo Honda Gresini wrote another page in their history books during

the latest round of the MotoGP World Championship. It had to be at the aptly renamed Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli that Alvaro Bautista scored his first MotoGP podium and his first with the team as Michele Pirro finished tenth overall and second in the CRT class. It was a special day for the team and an emotional way to remember Marco at his home circuit.

Bautista’s first MotoGP podium followed some crucial set-up tweaks to his RC213V, as well as a suspension upgrade from Showa. These changes allowed the Spaniard to get back to his usual all-attack riding style. Seventh at the end of the first lap, he picked off his rivals one by one, taking third place from Stefan Bradl on lap 19 of 27. On the last lap Bautista came under attack from Andrea Dovizioso who dived inside at the final turn, then ran wide. The pair raced towards the finish line side by side, the difference just 0.003s.

MotoGP. Above all this is a very special weekend for me and the team, because our memories of Marco are so strong coming here to the circuit named in his honour. After a few tough races we have worked well here and managed to fight for the podium at last. I am so happy for the team and for Marco, because I am sure that wherever he is right now he was pushing us along. Castrol-backed Mike Neff reached the final round at the kick-off race for the Countdown to

the Championship, on the heels of winning the Mac Tools US Nationals. Unfortunately he suffered the same fate as 2011 losing a tough final to a Don Schumacher Racing Dodge Charger at the 5th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Nationals. This year it was Ron Capps’ NAPA Auto Parts Charger that out ran the driver and crew chief’s Castrol GTX Ford Mustang. After a five hour rain delay Neff battled his way through four tough rounds and moved up to the no. 2 position in the Full Throttle points.

“We qualified third and ended up second. So, all in all, it’s always a good day anytime you go to the final. It’s a little

disappointing having it smoke the tires like that. We didn’t make any changes. We weren’t trying to be more aggressive there at all. We did the same thing all day long so we’re kinda shocked that it did that,” said Neff. “We ran good all day right in there with everyone else. So it was a good day. It’s nice to have a good first race in the Countdown because you just can’t afford to go out early it seems like. So to be able to make a positive gain here today, going from fourth to second in the points, it feels good so we’re not going to complain about that.”

In the final he did not have lane choice, a hurdle he had overcome in the previous two rounds with success. Capps took the right lane relegating Neff to the suspect left lane

where his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang overpowered the track and smoked the tires just past the Christmas Tree. Capps winning time of 4.060 was a tick off his winning semi-final time.

Neff outran Johnny Gray in the opening session 4.271 to Gray’s 5.931. His was the second slowest winning ET of the opening round and after that Neff was dead-on. He defeated teammate and boss John Force 4.065 to 4.129 and in a tough semi-final race he ran away from Capps’ teammate Jack Beckman with a solid 5.050 second run to Beckman’s 4.298 second pass. In the semis Capps bested Neff’s time by three thousandths of a second and that proved to be the difference in the final considering it gave him the valuable lane choice decision.

Neff was joined in the second round by John Force after the 15-time champion outran his rookie daughter, Courtney Force, for the first time in 2012. The elder Force was 0-2 against the odds on favorite for Rookie of the Year Honors, Courtney Force. Force’s Traxxas Ford Mustang uncharacteristically smoked the tires again in the suspect left lane and Force took the win light.

“You have to get up to race your teammates. I am up because I am 63 and I love what I do. I am out there to win every round. I taught my kid all I can teach her. I have been in mental overload so it was nice to just be out there and racing her. Young people like Courtney and Alexis bring your energy up and I love it. I try and feed off of their energy.”

At the end of the day John Force was pleased with how his team started the Countdown. His optimism was buoyed by the continued strong performance of Neff, Courtney and Robert Hight.

“Neff moved up to second by going to the final today. I held my position. We have three really good race cars. Robert, Mike and Courtney’s Mustangs are all set. My Castrol GTX HIGH MILEAGE Mustang is coming around. It is starting to show consistency. If we can improve on what we ran this weekend we can go after this championship. I know Guido and Danny are doing their best and getting better every run.”

In the first race of her Countdown career Courtney Force had one of the toughest draws. Her Traxxas Ford Mustang had performed well over the course of the weekend.

Fourth for Castrol-backed Honda rider Rea at Nurburgring

Jonathan Rea finished fourth in the second World Superbike championship race at the Nurburgring in Germany after crashing out of race one unhurt. The races were won by Max Biaggi and Chaz Davies as Rea’s Castrol-backed Honda World Superbike team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama took two points-scoring finishes.

Starting from the outside of row two, Rea made a good start to race one but lost the front end of his Honda CBR1000RR at turn six early in the race. In race two, the 25-year-old became embroiled in a battle for a podium slot but was unable to sustain his challenge in the closing laps.

Aoyama benefitted from several riders crashing out of race one but still maintained his steady improvements on his first race weekend at the 5.137km Nurbugring circuit to take a top ten finish.

did not bring the additional rear grip he was seeking for the second 20-lap outing, however, and the 30-year-old Japanese rider finished in 15th place.

Jonathan Rea – DNF and 4th“It’s been frustrating again because we had top five pace for race one but, looking at the data, I made a mistake in the corner before the crash. I arrived at a slower speed but I was carrying a bit more lean angle than on the previous lap, so it was a strange crash, but it was a mistake. Race two was OK at the beginning and we were fortunate that two of the front guys crashed out, which gifted us a couple of positions. But getting off the corner, especially when the tyre drops, is our biggest problem and that affects our top speed. It’s been a positive weekend for my riding and the guys are working really hard in the box but, like the previous few rounds, we haven’t been able to convert it into two solid results, so that’s frustrating.”

Hiroshi Aoyama – 10th and 15th“In the first race we still had the same problem that we’ve had all season,

which is out of the corner I cannot open the throttle as I want. The race was critical for the front, as well, and I didn’t have such a good feeling here. But maybe there was another problem because many riders crash on the front. It was difficult and we managed to finish the race in tenth. For race two, the conditions were different and the grip levels went down. I had a big problem out of the corners and I could not go faster than this morning. I struggled a bit but this was my first race at the Nurburgring and we improved in every session. In the end, we could not reach our potential but we have some data so I hope we can find some new solutions for the next race in Portugal, which will be another new track for me.”

A strong showing by Aussie Parkes in Supersport race

Castrol-backed Ten Kate Racing Products Honda rider Broc Parkes finished fourth in the 11th round World Supersport championship race at Nurburgring in Germany, missing out on the podium potential that he showed in qualifying.

The race was won by championship leader Kenan Sofuoglu with Honda rider Jules Cluzel second and Fabien Foret third. Former two-time Ten Kate World Supersport champion Sofuoglu now boasts a 38-point series lead with two races remaining.

Starting from the front row of the grid for today’s 19-lap race at the 5.137km Nurburgring circuit, Parkes was able to stay with Sofuoglu and Cluzel in the early laps, holding a comfortable third place. However, the 30-year-old Australian cited a lack of drive out of corners that prevented him from securing what would have been his fourth podium of the season.

stay with them. I didn’t have the best set-up, but wasn’t the worst either. It was just disappointing because I went slowly backwards and ended up fifth, trying to push myself to my own limits to see what we could make out of the situation. Sam Lowes crashed, which put me up a spot, but I want to be back in the battle for the podium.”

richo’s saFety tiPs #12 blue bottle stings

Blue bottle stings are a hidden nightmare on many Australian beaches. Not only do they hurt like

hell, they can be dangerous if you have an allergic reaction.

If you are out swimming in the ocean and you’re stung by a blue bottle – you’ll know about it!

Once you’re out of the ocean, remove any remaining tentacles with sea water and then head to the changerooms – the best treatment for a sting is to either place it in hot water around 45 degrees Celsius (or as warm as you can tolerate) for 20 minutes. It’s probably easier to get under a hot shower for that length of time, directing the shower onto the sting.

DO NOT rub it with vinegar like the old school method suggests. If you can’t get access to warm water, an ice pack will suffice, which you’ll be able to get from the Surf Lifesavers.

Blue bottle stings generally won’t scar long term, but can blister the skin. See your pharmacist for a treatment if you are still blistered after a couple of days.

If you are with someone who has an anaphylactic reaction (severe allergic reaction) to the sting, ring 000. Its advisable to seek medical help if the sting is large or is in a sensitive area such as the eye.

Sadly, blue bottles are a part of life in Australian waters, but being vigilant and acting swiftly to combat the sting will help you recover quickly.

The Qantas Wallabies fought off a spirited Argentina Pumas side to claim a narrow four-point victory at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast in their latest Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship clash.

In the first ever Rugby Test at the venue 22,278 turned out on the Gold Coast for a game that started slowly but finished with a flurry and a last ditch push by the Pumas for their first victory on Australian soil since 1983. After trailing 3-6 at halftime the Qantas Wallabies found themselves trailing by two tries within 12 minutes of the second half starting.

The Pumas crossed for the first try of

the match in the 50th minute through Tomas Leonardi and then followed up with another just two minutes later from Julio Farais Cabello. Unfortunately the Pumas couldn’t add the extras, however in the 58th minute added three more points from a penalty goal to lead by 13 points. The flurry of attacking forays by the Argentinians seems to spark the Qantas Wallabies to life and after a number of phases a hard running Pat McCabe crossed to get the Qantas Wallabies back within six points with 20 minutes to play.

The Gold Coast crowd didn’t have to wait long for a second Qantas Wallabies try after new scrum half, Nick Phipps

spotted a gap on the blindside and after missing three tackles released man-of-the-match Digby Ioane. Barnes added the extras and earned himself a rest after some solid work at full back. The Qantas Wallabies went further ahead in the 79th minute when substitute Kurtley Beale slotted a long range penalty goal from close to the side line.

With just a minute left on the clock the Pumas had one last chance to steal a victory after Tatafu Polota-Nau knocked on from the kick off, however some solid defending saw the Qantas Wallabies register their second win of the Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship.
