DuPont™ Sorona®
High end fashion fabrics for exclusive Chiffon Sarees.
Surat’s textile industry in Gujarat is the hub for Indian ethnic wear production. Home to one of Asia’s largest textile markets consisting of more than
50,000 traders. Surat consumes about 40% of the country’s man-made fiber production.
Vipul Fashions, one of the key pioneers in Surat’s textile industry, has truly captured the imagination of today’s women. Since 1974, Vipul Fashions has
been a trusted brand, well known for its range of women’s ethnic and traditional fashion. From bridal designs to contemporary trends, Vipul Fashions
has them all and is incorporating new age solutions to address the critical and changing needs of today’s evolving consumers.
Natural materials like silk have been at the epitome of Indian women’s ethnic wear since ancient times, and has been a choice traditionally available
only for the elite. To bring affordable fabric options to the larger population, the textile industry in Surat has continuously strived to adopt man-made
fibers that have aesthetics closer to that of silk. Incorporating some man-made fibers was not an easy endeavor and resulted in some intense
processes that disregarded energy and environmental concerns. This raised an important need to find an alternate fiber that is gentler on the
environment, easy to care for and yet aesthetically comparable to natural materials like silk.
Issue
Solution
Indian consumers are moving from the idea of “need to have” to a “nice to have” and this means that consumers are appreciating better quality fabrics
that are also better for the environment. The challenge was to find a cutting edge fabric that was light-weight and easy to care for, had natural softness,
draped well and gave exceptional hand-feel.
Challenge
DuPont identified that fibers based on their latest innovative material, Sorona®, have all the characteristics that are most suitable for a new range of
chiffon fabrics. Vipul Fashions recognized this as an opportunity to develop fabrics made with DuPont™ Sorona® that are inherently soft, light-weight
and have unique properties that result in silk-like fabric aesthetics, perfect for chiffon sarees. The soft nature of Sorona® reduces the requirement for
extreme processing conditions which results in better fabric aesthetics. Sorona® allows for better color uptake resulting in brighter colors, vibrant and
attractive prints that have an exceptional color fastness property and fabrics that are easier to care for, unlike their natural counterparts. And to tie it
all together, it is made with plant-based ingredients, making it gentler on the environment.
