How important is it to network and collaborate with other providers?
Consulting with the other treatment team members is crucial to a correct diagnosis and treatment.
Sharing concerns and case notes with others on the team helps to learn from different types /levels of experience.
Greatly assists in the overall workload of those involved
Follows liability procedures for providing needed treatment.
How do case managers engage in collaboration with other providers to help clients receive services?
Use active listening skills and open questions to learn the most important needs of the client.
Engage , collaborate and compromise with fellow treatment team members
Keep an up to date list of various referral contacts.
Maintain professional contacts with those in various fields who may be of future assistance to a client.
How do case managers find and select resources?
Be attentive to client needs , motivations , and support systems.
Collaborate with other professionals on client cases.
Foster good working relationships with referral professionals.
Be open to exchanging information with other helping professionals.
What is the role of the CM in the referral process?
Facilitating the clients transition from one service or resource to another.
Help client to meet immediate needs and or short long term goals.
Ongoing encouragement and support to client
Proper follow up with clients regarding ongoing progress of goals.
What are the responsibilities of the client in the referral process? Rule of thumb: Never work harder than the client.
Client must want to change.
Helper is there to assist not enable the client.
Client needs to be willing to be vulnerable to expressing and feeling emotions and thoughts which may be difficult.
Client must be willing to actively participate in the referral process. I.e.)attending sessions, meetings, making calls etc
What would you say are some difficult aspects of your position?
Working with difficult clients
Working with unprofessional , uncooperativehuman service colleagues.
Lack of available funding for resources
Limited available resources
What are the least enjoyable aspects of your field? Clients dealing with difficult often co morbid
conditions. I.e.) mental illness and substance abuse, other types of abuse
Difficult or non existent support for clients.
Difficult fellow treatment professionals
Low pay in many humans service professions.
What types of personality traits are helpful for one in this field? Hard working
Culturally sensitive
Empathic
Honest
Observant
Inquisitive
What advice do you have about this field for those who may be interested?
Network with others as much as possible
Be willing to learn about any new opportunities relating the field.
Remember to advocate and encourage clients not enable.
Self care is a must; be aware of burn out
What are the enjoyable aspects of your position?
Able to help client obtain needed resources
Collaborate with others
Learn something new everyday
Meet new human service professionals
Able to use education and understanding to make a difference in others lives.
